When I started prepping I was the guy with 1 month of storage of food on shelves in the basement and what amounted to 2 days worth of water for my family to go along side of it. Filtering materials are activated charcoal or charcoal you make yourself, sand, cloth, coffee filters, gravel and cheesecloth. The finer filtering material is placed in the bottom while less dense material such as gravel is placed in the filtering device last. Water boils at different temperatures depending on elevation; higher elevations have less air pressure, which means water boils at a lower temperature.
When using common household bleach you will need an eyedropper to dispense drops and the bleach must not have any additives such as fragrances. You either left out or overlooked one of the best storage containers around: Used bleach bottles! According to several places, if you use soap or bleach bottles to store water, that water is ONLY to be used for washing hands, flushing toilets and such. Stores water, food or anything you want to keep dry or store efficiently while eliminating most food odors.

Also we found out the hard way that the 2.5 gallon store bought water does not hold up well on the shelf. The ventless feature means there does not have to be a vent in the container allowing the same WaterBrick water container to store food if no longer needed for water.
Make sure you elevate large containers so you can collect the water as it filters out the bottom. However, this temperature range must be maintained for at least one hour, some consider this pasteurization.
If storing your water outdoors, select a dark color to limit algae growth and store your water in the shade if possible. Milk is a perishable so the manufactures used materials in the containers designed for short-term storage.
Before using for the first time and assuming, the barrels were purchased new, rinse well with a mild bleach solution such as a tablespoon per gallon of water.
