In partnership with Malawi Relief Fund - UK, Gift of the Givers hands over 250 Farmer Packs to families in Chiradzulu District. On December 5, ICM staff revisited Logingot Island for the first time since our initial visit two weeks prior — this time to distribute more relief packs for 220 families. Another mother, Analyn Diaz, told ICM staff with tears in her eyes that she will never be able to forget this disaster and the devastation it caused. Analyn and her friends walked away from the relief distribution knowing that they have enough food for the next few days. After days of tense waiting, relief goods made their way to remote villages and into the eager arms of devastated and displaced survivors of Typhoon Haiyan. Located in the Western Visayas region, the Island of Panay was struck particularly hard by the typhoon.
Major obstacles hinder some of the remote villages from receiving aid, but our ICM Staff continue to go the extra mile. At the end of most days, the trucks pull back into the base around 9:00pm at night, empty and ready for a new load. It’s hard to imagine how many families are able to survive after Typhoon Haiyan swept through the Philippines. Punta Buri is a tiny remote island, a one-hour boat ride from the main island of Panay in Central Philippines. Far from media attention or international relief efforts, it was three days after the typhoon struck that the destitute residents of Punta Buri received aid from their local government. In the panic during the hours when the typhoon hit, Leo’s wheelchair-bound mother was unable to evacuate. ICM’s disaster fund is bringing hope and tangible change in many different ways to thousands of families in the Western Visayas. The stumbling blocks that some of our Most Innovative Companies have faced on their journeys to success and what they learned along the way. The Tentative by Turkish firm Designnobis offers temporary emergency housing for displaced families. Designnobis tackles two of the major flaws it sees with disaster-relief tents: privacy and protection from the elements. The project is in the prototyping phase and while it looks nice and elegantly offers a solution to post-disaster housing, the real challenge will be manufacturing it at an affordable price. The architects at Designnobis, a firm based in Turkey, estimated that natural disasters displaced 22 million people in 2013. While durability and quality of life are incredibly important design considerations, what relief structures boil down to is a matter of dollars and cents. During this trip, we got the privilege to speak with several mothers who shared their experiences during and after Typhoon Haiyan. Caridad’s husband makes a living as a fisherman, as do most people living on this small island. Analyn and her family lost their house, despite her husband’s efforts to prevent it from collapsing during the storm. 12 million have been affected, millions are without homes, electricity and basic necessities, and they need our help. A fishing community, this once green and lush island is now brown and barren, with trees blown down and wreckage everywhere; devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan.
Dragging her two grandchildren with her, they fled their home chased by huge tsunami-like waves, which flattened everything in their path. Fearing for her life, Leo picked her up, threw her over his shoulder, and carried her up the mountain to safety.
But they are lives with a very bleak outlook; no shelter, no electricity, no livelihood, scarce clean water. Be it an earthquake, hurricane, flood, fire, or another malady, the best you can do is prepare for whatever hits, and have a plan in place for relief. In 2011, disaster hit close to home, when a 7.2 magnitude quake centered in eastern Turkey destroyed hundreds of buildings and left thousands homeless.
The Tentative structure, as it's called, measures about 86 square feet and rises just over eight feet tall.
And as we saw during Hurricane Katrina, the temporary shelters became semi-permanent housing due to the grueling rebuilding process and were needed far longer than anticipated. If Designnobis can find a manufacturer to produce the shelters affordably, viability might be within reach. Import charges previously quoted are subject to change if you increase you maximum bid amount. With no electricity or way to communicate with the mainland, and with all of the boats damaged, people on the island started to panic. They had to crawl on hands and knees up the mountain to avoid the children being blown away by the winds.

Then we progress to longer term needs such as rebuilding homes, churches and community centers, boats and infrastructures. In response to the typhoon, we are launching two new operational bases to reach out to affected regions with our poverty reduction programs. Designnobis saw that the emergency tents deployed at the time performed terribly and so they went to the drawing board and set out to engineer something better. Massive tent cities went up and while they offered shelter, they did not respond to the environment well at all.
There's a proper door and window on each tent and the entire kit folds down to under a foot thick. If you reside in an EU member state besides UK, import VAT on this purchase is not recoverable.
After the destructive winds and rains of Typhoon Haiyan, which forced the family to abandon their collapsing home, simmered down, Caridad returned to the little that was left standing. It scares Analyn not knowing when relief will stop arriving because she does not know how she will care for her child if the food runs out. Each family received 10 packs of nutrient-fortified food, 10 packs of noodles, 3 canned food items, 1 pack of Sky Flakes biscuits, and 1 pack of Milo drink.  Although healing will take time, everyone seemed determined and motivated to begin picking up the pieces of their old homes and building new ones. He said “what the people of Logingot experienced during the typhoon is too horrible to describe or even imagine.” Joel knew that without help, his people wouldn’t survive.
Our Transform Program brings the support, training and resources that equip the poor to rebuild their lives. I would recommend getting a tracking# for your return package to ensure safety of the package return.
So he found a mattress, and fashioned a raft to swim to the mainland to ask for help for his village.
In the height of the storm, Stella’s husband heroically rescued two of his neighbours who had climbed a tree to try to escape the waves.
With no source of income, he says he is now totally dependent on any relief goods that have come to the island for food and clothing. These bases will run intensive, community based, holistic programs in 80 communities, positively impacting 12,500 family members. Disaster can occur in summer, winter, autumn, or spring and each season may bring torrential rain, snow, blistering heat, or frigid temperatures. With no money and no resources to begin rebuilding, the entire family is living in the half of their home that weathered the storm. Since the tents are made from thin material and placed on the ground, they do a poor job insulating.
