This forecast is not only the new 2012-2013 Winter forecast but it’s a comparison with my old forecast to just show you what has changed. Im not sure how much snow these areas will get yet but these areas will have above average snowfall this winter. Even with a -PDO and a suppresses southern jet you still think Northern Va cold & snowy????
Last winter was very disappointing, so do you think that there will be a snowy winter in the Southeast or for the Atlanta area? The 2015 Farmers’ Almanac Winter Outlook was right on in the Northeast but way off for the West Coast and Rocky Mountains. According to the Farmers’ Almanac, the winter of 2015–2016 is looking like a repeat of last winter, at least in terms of temperatures with unseasonably cold conditions over the Atlantic Seaboard, eastern portions of the Great Lakes, and the lower peninsula of Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, most of the Tennessee and Mississippi Valley, as well as much of the Gulf Coast. Farther west, over the Rockies, the Colorado Plateau, Pacific Northwest, and the Southwest States, milder than normal temperatures are expected. Precipitation-wise, if you like snow, then you should head out to the northern and central Great Plains (most of the North Central States), the Great Lakes, New England (sorry Boston!), and parts of the Ohio Valley where snowier-than-normal conditions are forecast. Over the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States, the winter will be stormy with a good amount of snow. An active storm track will bring above-normal precipitation to the Southeast States, as well as the Mississippi Valley, Southern Great Plains, the Gulf Coast, and along the Atlantic Seaboard. One thing all forecasters seem to agree on is a very strong El Nino pattern now in the Pacific ocean which means those of us in the east can expect warmer than average temperatures from now through October. The Farmers Almanac will be out with their predictions by the end of the August and I will post them at that time.

I would love to see comparisons from predictions of previous years to the actual outcomes at winters end. Winter storms are considered deceptive killers because most deaths are indirectly related to the storm. Preschool children are old enough to begin dressing themselves, but they need to know what clothing is needed for the current season.
However, I do like how you expanded the cold and snow in the east, seems a lot more realistic, because you probably will have a few storms that try to run up the I-95 corridor and dump the heaviest snow near the mountains. This includes the western and central Great Lakes, the upper peninsula of Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, and most of the Great Plains. In these areas, Ms. We are “red-flagging” the second week of January and the second week of February for possible heavy winter weather with a long, drawn out spell of stormy weather extending through much of the first half of March. Sponsored by Wisconsin Emergency Management and the National Weather Service offices in the state, Winter Weather Awareness Week seeks to inform and educate the public on the dangers of winter weather in Wisconsin. Examples of such deaths include traffic accidents on icy or snow-covered roads, prolonged exposure to the cold and indoor carbon monoxide poisoning. In addition, there are numerous winter storm maps and a history of Wisconsin’s winter weather produced by the National Weather Service. Jack Frost fills branches with fairy-like feathers and transforms spiders' webs into fabulous filigree.

It seems as though KC and Topeka both get hit but we’re usually on the outskirts of anything that comes our way which is odd considering we’re smack dab between those two! Nature will mix intervals of unseasonably mild temperatures with occasional shots of bitter cold; average it out and it comes out–average!Texas and the other South Central States will see a cool to cold winter, but nothing too extreme. So sharpen those skis and boards, because the eastern slopes look like the ideal places to carve some turns. Forecasters are predicting another La Nina pattern for our area, that means colder temps, and above average precipitation. Use a winter coat, spring jacket, scarf, sunglasses, mittens, flip flops, boots, winter hat and a visor.  Ask your child to rummage through the clothing bucket and find something that would be used in the winter.
Don't forget - winter is also a time to keep an eye out for those special shots before they melt away forever. Now is the time to winterize your car and home, gather items for an emergency kit in your car, and make sure you have a NOAA Weather Radio with fresh batteries.
