Here we will deal with water storage for preppers as an integral part of a preparedness plan. Stored water must be pure, treated water to prevent microbial growth, and stored in food-grade containers. There are several gallons of clean water in the water heater and piping within your home at all times. There are several possible contaminants that you need to consider when making a selection for emergency water: bacteria, protozoa, viruses and chemicals are all possible contaminants that make water unsafe to drink. If the water source is not chlorinated, household bleach (5% sodium hypochlorite) should be added.
Calcium Hypochlorite more commonly known as Pool Shock, is one of our preferred methods for water purification. Since some treatment equipment is easier to store than water, and you never know the nature of the disturbance that will necessitate the need for water, we recommend preparing for at least one treatment option in addition to storing water. Commercially packaged water can be stored for about 5 years; home filled stored water should be changed annually. Stored water must be pure and disinfected to prevent microbial growth, then stored in food-grade containers (water from the tap stores well). These are convenient, clean, you can pick the taste you prefer, and they are sealed for longer storage. You may close the inlet valve immediately after the water supply is disrupted and use the water in your water heater. This will not protect against contamination of the water supply but would be a good source of water for non-potable needs. Since it is hard to determine whether you have cleaned out all of the bleach these are technically not suitable for potable water but may be used for sanitation needs.
These filtration units are typically installed at your kitchen sink and are intended for continuous use. Iodine treatment is effective against microbial and virus contaminants but only marginally effective against protozoa. There are several commercially available devices that use UV light to disinfect small containers of water. The effectiveness of UV light treatment will be significantly diminished the dirtier or cloudier the water is. Most people do not like the taste of boiled water and it takes a long time for the water temperature to reduce to consumable levels. In developed countries, such as the USA, having clean water at your disposal at anytime is often just expected to always be available. During natural disasters, or other events, these services can be disrupted or compromised, causing the water supply to become contaminated or undeliverable.
The importance of proper water storage for emergencies can sometimes be the difference between life and death.
Remember that stored drinking water has an expiration date and should be used and rotated regularly to make sure your supply is always fresh. When collecting water that isn’t meant for drinking or cooking, you can pretty much use anything to store it, but when storing water that is meant for human consumption, it is important to only use containers that are made with materials that are rated as food grade. The easiest and probably the best way to store safe drinking water is to buy cases of bottled water from the store. If you don’t have much money and still want to store water, then your best option would be empty 2 liter soft drink bottles. Glass is easy to come by, easy to sterilize, and does not pose the same risk of leeching chemicals into the water as plastic. If you can afford it, your best bet is to purchase plastic tanks specifically designed for water storage.

FEMA recommends that you store at least one gallon of water, per person, per day but I say store at least two gallons per person, per day. How often you need to rotate your water supplies will depend largely on how well you are able to store them. In ideal storage conditions (sterilized stainless steel drums with clean water in a temperature-controlled environment) you may be able to store water for up to three years before it will need to be rotated. Contaminated or suspect water can be treated at home during an emergency to make it safe for consumption.

The higher the elevation, the longer you need boil the water to kill the same pathogens (as much as 12 minutes in the high mountains). Treating water instead of storing it will save space but relies on a water source and one may not be available. Stored water will go flat but can be aerated prior to consumption by pouring it between two containers a few times.
Can be purchased new at emergency supply stores and sometimes used ones are available (such as from soda syrup).
Make sure you look closely at what the system will and will not remove and what maintenance is required when purchasing. In this case the water should be filtered through a clean cloth and allowed to settle before UV treatment is applied. Since much of the water is lost to evaporation, this is not a good option if water supply is limited. Water is collected and treated for us by treatment plants to remove contaminants such as heavy metals, bacteria and disease.
You will never know when a disaster may strike and it may never happen, but it’s always a good idea to be prepared anyway.
Quick water treatment solutions such as boiling water are only a short term solution and depending on the type of contamination may not even be useful. Your emergency water storage should be changed out every six months, so it’s a good idea to mark the containers with the date they were filled. HDPE is one of the most stable and inert forms of plastic, and all plastic buckets sold specifically for food storage will be made from this material. The advantage to this is that everything is already properly sealed and separated into individual bottles for easy consumption. Another issue is that bottled water comes in thin clear plastic containers, which means they have to be protected from light for long term storage.
To use these, after you have washed them out with soap and water, you must sanitize them with a solution of 1 quart water mixed with 1 teaspoon of non scented bleach. These can even come in very large sizes that can hold many gallons of water, but obviously these will be difficult, if not impossible, to transport if you need to leave your home in a hurry. In an emergency you would pull this baby out and put it in your bathtub and just fill it up.
While some people would say that all plastic is questionable, for long term storage, certainly non-food-grade plastic is definitely out.
While you may be able to get great cheap or free barrels through Freecycle, Craig’s List, or scouting what is laying around your neighborhood, better to find another use for them besides food or water unless you know with absolute certainty what was in them before. Right about now, you are probably thinking – I know, I can use old milk jugs and juice bottles! While you might think if you just wash it well enough then it will be fine, don’t take chances with your water – it is just too important!
For a two week water supply you will need to store at least 28 gallons per person — 14 gallons for drinking and 14 gallons for other uses.
Consider this an absolute base-line though, as many of the above considerations could up your family’s water needs considerably. If you are using any kind of plastic containers, or if the containers are not in a somewhat temperature-controlled space or exposed to light from time to time, do not store the water in them for more than 6 months. Ideally, do not use the water you are rotating out for drinking water unless it is all the clean water that is available.
When purchasing a hand pump, try to get a reputable company such as "Atlantis" which is actually proven effective. Usually there are hand pumps especially created depending on the capacity and type of application. The reason why they are only "used" once by companies and then gotten rid of, is because they can NEVER BE FULLY CLEANED.
Many families elect to store water in their garage, basement or empty closet in preparation of Hurricanes & Earthquakes, Power Outages or a Contaminated City Water Supply.
Be sure to wrap your thread tape against the grain of the threads and be sure to only wrap 2 revolutions. Stainless Steel is less corrosive, higher quality, doesn't rust and is great for drinking water.
The Lead-Free Brass Ball Valve Assembly is for the bottom fitting of your Emergency Water Tank. We purchased some of those heavy duty shelving units to store food and water since we have a very small place and I calculated how much weight we could put on the shelves according to the manufacturers recommendations. I was a little concerned about the center placement of the cap and hence spigot as it looks like if we were to use the containers in the fridge and on the counter it might be difficult to actually easily empty them without having to tip them up. There are a number of fakes out there that look very similar to the genuine one but breaks easily.
One popular use is for extracting water from a deep well with the outdated spout pump in remote places where there's no electrical power. The easy availability of clean drinking water right now often makes us complacent about our water storage. After securing the safety of your family members, please isolate your home from the public water system by turning of the main water valve to your home.
Consider the size, weight (once filled with water), ease of use, rotation and portability of the container you select. Water should also be stored in areas that will not cause damage to the home if the containers leak.
These containers need to be protected against light and leakage as they are typically thinner plastic.
You can also get five-gallon containers (typically in boxes or bags) at emergency supply stores. If they do not, then it is your responsibility to perform the required maintenance on these units. Some brands now come with a neutralizer tablets to correct the color and taste at an additional cost. This technology may be effective to inactivate several pathogens such as bacteria and protozoans but does not protect against viruses.
The commercially purchased lamps require batteries and the homemade versions rely on sunlight.
Since power disruptions may accompany water emergencies, additional fuel storage should be considered for this treatment option. We created Freedom Preppers to share the knowledge of preparedness that has come with years of research and practice. Water weighs about eight pounds per gallon and a four gallon container will come in at a little over 32 pounds. My research has found that stored water should be rotated about every six months unless treated with something like Aquamira which is an affordable water treatment. You have personally experienced what can happen to the critical infrastructure of this nation from natural disasters. It’s then delivered to our homes and the only effort required from us is to simply turn on the tap. Considering the importance of safe drinking water and the relatively low cost to store it, having an emergency water storage supply is never a bad idea.
Like I stated before, you can survive for weeks without food but can only last 3 days without water; it’s that important!

Commercially bottled has an expiration date too that is printed on each bottle and will last a little longer then water you have stored at home. Also you don’t have to do anything to prepare the water and there is no chance of making mistakes that could cause problems later. Shake the solution thoroughly in the bottle and then rinse the bottle out with clean water.
Store containers away from any fuels or chemicals as the vapors from these items can penetrate plastic over time.
The plastic containers can leech dangerous chemicals into anything you store in them, degrade over time, and often are so thin that rodents, bugs, and other pests have no trouble finding their way into the container. Any kind of chemical (yes – including cleaners) could soak into the plastic and then soak right back out again into your long-term water storage.
Other than glass, or stainless steel, which can be sterilized by boiling in hot water for at least 20 minutes, it is better to be safe than sorry. If you live in a desert area, with little local water, women in your family who may be pregnant or nursing, children, and a couple pets, you will want to triple that amount, or more.
A container should be used within a short period of time after being opened, so drinking a 50-gallon drum of water in time will be a challenge. There are actually cheap tools you can buy that looks and function the same but makes use of low quality materials that can instantly fail when used repeatedly. One common use is for taking out water from a deep well with the old fashioned pitcher pump in remote places where there's no source of electricity. Water treatment facilities may be down for weeks following a disaster which means that you need to store a substantial supply of emergency water for drinking, hygiene, and sanitation.
Storing Potable Drinking Water is usually at the top of the list in practicing practical preparedness. However most importantly, this option will allow you to lock your valves with a standard pad lock (pad locks not included). If you going to use it for drinking water then make sure it is constructed of food grade parts and if you're not sure then don't purchase it.
Barrel should be used in conjunction with Water Purification Concentrate in order to safely store water outdoors for 5 years. However, you cannot assume that the current water infrastructure will be intact after a major disaster or other emergency. This will allow you to use this water even if the public water system has been contaminated. Granted, most sources that we have researched recommend one gallon per person per day should provide enough for sanitary and hydration needs in an emergency.
Aesthetic components such as taste, odor, and hardness are not at all harmful to health, but they may be a consideration in the storage or treatment option you choose. If you don’t know whether your tap water has been chlorinated, you can call your water provider or test your tap water with a spa kit (a commercially-available water quality testing kit for home hot tubs and pools). However, if water is still available but the safety and quality of the water is suspect, then treatment methods will be useful in making that water safe to drink. Also consider the fact that these units are not portable should you need to leave your home. Chlorine dioxide is also effective against most contaminants and generates less taste complaints. The season and weather will effect these homemade varieties making them less reliable than may be desired. Sometimes a well written novel can help the non-prepper open their eyes to the importance of preparedness. These disasters, and the threats that we all contemplate as Preppers which could be much worst, keep us awake at night.
It’s easy to see how clean water can be taken for granted and just assumed that it will always be there. The downsides to glass are that it is heavy, breaks easily, and needs to be protected from light.
Better that just filling up the bathtub with water and having to worry about the drain leaking or worry about the fact that you just washed the family dog before you had to fill it up. Instead, use this water as “gray” water for watering plants, washing and cleaning, or even filling up the kiddie pool in the summer. If you going to use it for drinking water then be sure it is made of food grade parts and if you're not sure then don't purchase it.
Food companies know that these "used" barrels will ALWAYS BE CONTAMINATED WITH A RESIDUAL AMOUNT of the previously stored item, and would not risk contaminating future products; this is why they get rid of them so cheaply.
Whether your trying to deter curious children from emptying your water supply or keep someone else from using it, this is a great option!
Also we found out the hard way that the 2.5 gallon store bought water does not hold up well on the shelf. And for household use, the uncomplicated siphon pump is very popular in moving water or any liquid from one bottle to the other.
Water is delivered to your home through a series of buried pipes of various sizes and materials.
Assume a boil order is in effect after an emergency until you hear from an official otherwise.
These same sources recommend that you store about two weeks’ worth, or 14 gallons, of water per person. Concrete easily changes temperatures and continues to give off moisture for years so you should place a small platform under the water container for air movement.
But the sugars in fruit and milk are impossible to completely remove from the plastic, and can easily start your own petri dish of bacteria over time. Regardless of how much storage you are looking to build up, I recommend two gallons per person per day.
And for house use, the standard siphon pump is very popular in transferring water or any liquid from one bottle to the other. If storing your water outdoors, select a dark color to limit algae growth and store your water in the shade if possible. The Brass Ball Valve Assembly is used at the base of the tank and can be used for filling or draining.
If these pipes are damaged, it could take from a few days up to a few weeks to get them repaired to deliver water to your home again. If you have limited storage space, it also has the advantage of being able to be stored near gasoline, etc. I am sure you will be able to think of another use for these (or at least recycle them), but water storage is not the thing. So, a family of four would need 240 gallons for a one month supply; this would equate to just over 4 of the 55 gallon barrels. Natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes may cause such damage, and pollute or disrupt public water supplies. After this trial run, you will see why we believe that one gallon per day is wholly inadequate. It is wise to prepare now for such an event by storing appropriate amounts of water that will meet your water needs in an emergency.
Ideally, cushion the jars by wrapping in foam, paper, or even just putting them in a cardboard box, to reduce the likelihood of breakage.
