Hyperthermia is an abnormally high body temperature caused by a failure of the heat-regulating mechanisms of the body to deal with the heat coming from the environment.
Lifestyle factors can include not drinking enough fluids, living in housing without air conditioning, lack of mobility and access to transportation, overdressing, visiting overcrowded places and not understanding how to respond to hot weather conditions.
I’ve been working late every other night for the past two and a half weeks as I write this. Yesterday I delineated the danger signs of exercising in hot weather, but didn’t explain exactly how heat impacted the body itself.
Also I mentioned in an earlier post that my doctor told me not to go biking when there are 90 plus degree heat advisories. Summer officially started a week ago, but summer temps have been with us sporadically since March. When I asked my doctor about bike riding during heat advisories, she said not to do it and that she advised her 40-year-olds not to do it either. But besides my anecdotal evidence, how about some authoritative info straight from the horse’s mouth.
The Mayo Clinic suggests drinking enough fluids, wearing proper clothing and timing your workout to avoid extreme heat.
I wrote up a bizarre experience in September of 2010 that culminated in my wanting to drink a watermelon.

After I do these, I can feel the energy surging in my legs again and find new impetus and strength to ride. Signs of more severe heat illness, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, include a high body temperature (above 102° F), skin that is red and hot with lack of sweating, small pupils, a rapid and weak pulse, rapid and shallow breathing, extreme confusion or irritability, weakness, seizures, unconsciousness.
Children, the elderly, the obese, and patients with heart conditions or who are taking medications such as beta blockers, diuretics, neuroleptics, phenothiazines, and anticholinergics are particularly vulnerable to heat emergencies.
Advise patients to avoid consuming alcohol or excessive, prolonged exercise in hot and humid weather, as these activities can lead to a heat emergency. The aim of treatment in heat emergencies is to cool the patient down in a controlled fashion, and ensure hydration and normal blood flow. Once the acute phase is stabilized, further inpatient care may be necessary to address the complications of heatstroke. Heat emergencies are caused primarily by prolonged exposure to extreme heat and occur when a person's core body temperature rises above a safe level of the body's internal temperature range. There are three categories of a heat emergency: heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. Heat stroke often occurs as a progression from milder heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat syncope (fainting), and heat exhaustion.
Heat stroke results from prolonged exposure to high temperatures -- usually in combination with dehydration -- which leads to failure of the body's temperature control system. The hallmark symptom of heat stroke is a core body temperature above 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Other symptoms may include: 1) Throbbing headache, 2) Dizziness and light-headedness, 3) Lack of sweating despite the heat, 4) Red, hot, and dry skin, 5) Muscle weakness or cramps, 6) Nausea and vomiting, 7) Rapid heartbeat, which may be either strong or weak, 8) Rapid, shallow breathing, 9) Behavioral changes such as confusion, disorientation, or staggering, 10) Seizures, and 11) Unconsciousness. So I’m always on the lookout for information about them, particularly for why some people die from a heart attack without ever knowing they were in danger of having one.
The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health, has some advice for helping older people avoid heat-related illnesses, known as hyperthermia.
Heat fatigue, heat syncope (sudden dizziness after prolonged exposure to the heat), heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke are commonly known forms of hyperthermia. Older people, particularly those with chronic medical conditions, should stay indoors on hot and humid days, especially when an air pollution alert is in effect. In March of 2010, the beginning of this blog, I weighed 165 pounds which was my lowest and best weight in more than 20 years. Participants reduced their risk of diabetes by only doing one, but the combined effects were greater, it was found. My daily biking has brought my resting heart rate down below 50 and I have less than 17 percent body fat on me.
