The flooding in the Mississippi Valley this month has affected millions of acres of farmland in the Midwest. In one case, the US Army Corp of Engineers made the difficult decision to blow up levees to give the swollen river access to its floodplain in order to save larger towns downstream. Conservationists argue that part of the problem is that development along the rivers has destroyed the natural landscape that slows flooding in the first place, the floodplain forest. New Hampshire Public Radio’s Amy Quinton reports on one effort to restore a floodplain forest in New Hampshire along the Connecticut River. We’re in Northumberland, New Hampshire, where the Connecticut and Ammonoosuc Rivers meet. We’re surrounded by about 45 acres of farmland that normally flood several times a year.
It’s one of the reasons the Nature Conservancy has launched an effort to restore sites like this one in Northumberland. If that works and the seeds germinate, it would be the most economical way to restore the floodplain. The Nature Conservancy has spent the last several years mapping the Connecticut River watershed to find where these natural floodplain forests still exist. Kim Lutz, Director of the organization’s Connecticut River Program, says much of the forests have been developed or converted to farmland. The Nature Conservancy is working with the US Army Corp of Engineers to see how changing the flow of water over the dams can make a difference for these forests’ survival. Chris Hatfield is Project Manager with the US Army Corp, which operates the 14 flood control dams along the Connecticut. Those floodplain forests require a certain amount of inundation for a certain period of time during a certain time of year and if we’re chopping the peak we may be impacting that floodplain. Kim Lutz says there will likely never be a time when flood control dams aren’t needed.

The floodplain forest restoration site in Northumberland sits upstream from the flood control dams along the Connecticut River. The ebb and flow of water still occurs naturally there, so the Nature Conservancy is hoping their restoration will be a success. If it is, they’ll use what they learn there to restore other floodplain forests along the four-state Connecticut River watershed. In the past fifty years, the Big Quilcene River has suffered loss of connectivity with the floodplain due to extensive diking for agricultural purposes. The Paraná River appears as a wide, blue strip with the muddy brown water of the smaller Verde River entering from the northwest (top left). Turbid water, such as that in the Verde River, is common in most rivers that drain plowed agricultural land, as some topsoil is washed into local rivers after rains. Floodplains by DesignHealthy floodplains can help increase flood protection, recharge aquifers, and improve wildlife habitat.

Floodplain Reconnection The Nature Conservancy is working with partners to reconnect 25 square miles of former floodplain forest back to Louisiana’s Ouachita River, which is located within the Mississippi River Basin.
The Nature Conservancy is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization (tax identification number 53-0242652) under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. We’ll be in touch soon with more Nature Conservancy news, updates and exciting stories. An extensive wetland (dark green) occupies most of the left half of this astronaut photograph, and the floodplain reaches a width of 11 kilometers (about 7 miles).

The evidence for this is that the entire surface is crisscrossed by the wider traces of former Paraná River channels, as well as numerous narrower traces of the Verde.
A long tendril of brown water extends from the Verde into the main channel of the Paraná, where it hugs the west bank and remains unmixed for many kilometers.
This animated feature illustrates how we can harness these rich ecosystems to benefit both people and wildlife. The floodplains along both rivers are bordered by numerous rectangular agricultural fields.
The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed.
The dominant crops along this part of the Paraná River are coffee, corn, and cotton.
The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory as part of the ISS National Lab to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet.
It was deforested and separated from the river via the aforementioned levee in the late 1960's so that the land could be used for agriculture.
Fish and Wildlife Service had in mind, except that the partners had spent more than a year planning a $4.5 million project to permanently breach the Mollicy levee themselves.
They were also concerned that, if the breach holes were too small, there would be no good way to get the water from the Ouachita back out of the floodplain, which could be detrimental to the newly planted trees. We intend to recreate a semblance of the network of bayous and embedded wetlands that historically would hold water on Mollicy.
By holding water longer and slowing down the velocity of water flowing back to the river as floodwaters recede, we anticipate that nutrient and sediment export to the river will be minimized.
