The sudden change in energy levels can, and will, literally fry electrical circuits of computers, cars and other electrical appliances. I hope that by now, you can see that a specialized protective container specifically suited for EMP survivability should be used in place of the Faraday cage. Protection by means of complete and nu-penetrated enclosure is far more important than the ready ability to open the container. All genuine ammo cans use a rubber gasket between the lid and body flange to create the air tight seal. An alternative to a commercial gasket, which will need to form a solid union where each end comes together, is a home built crush gasket. A second method is to flip the EMP Box over onto it top, and melt plumber’s solder into the gap.
A third method allows you to get into the box quickly, but might not work against a very strong pulse.
A larger metal container used solely as a large EMP box will need to include, in its preparation, the usual sealing methods.
If you were to settle on a shipping container as a storage building, the shorter ones might make a whole lot of sense. EMP survivalEMP Bomb DiagramUnlike the strike of lightening, an EMP attack is not the same. Hand held radios will not work afte ran EMP scenario because the battery current will try to go backwards and the moment the radio is used will be fried.
The EMP in addition to extra gamma rays also puts a back EMF pulse that reverses polarity of batteries and anything else electro magnetic. What would work is to have EXTRA hand held radios stored in a Faraday Cage until after the energy of an EMP passes thru and the atmosphere is cleared but I am not sure how long that would take. SHTF blog (“Sewage” Hits The Fan blog) offers preparedness news, information, commentary – and other awesome stuff. As you can see from the map, a rogue nation with the ability to launch a nuclear bomb could do a lot more damage by detonating the bomb 300 miles above the United States than by hitting one particular city. In Part One of this series, I looked at what an EMP is, and the 3 types of EMPs (Electro Magnetic Pulse). Before I begin, I want to note that it has been pointed out to me that there are some technical differences between a nuclear E3 pulse and a solar storm. As I explained in the first part, a high altitude nuclear explosion or weaponized EMP would most likely contain all three types of pulses, where as a CME would only contain the characteristics of an E3 type pulse. The E3 component will geomagnetically induce currents in long electrical conductors, which can then damage or destroy components such as power line transformers and burn out power grid transformers by inducing DC-like currents.
What this means is, the E1 pulse of a nuclear EMP has the potential to damage electronic equipment, computers, communication equipment, etc.
The E3 type pulse would primarily affect the power grid, and is not likely to harm things like cell phones, computers, or vehicles unless they were directly connected to the power grid. If the CME was large enough, it could induce geomagnetic currents that could destroy a substantial fraction of the very largest transformers on the power grid (possibly over much of the world in a solar EMP). Basically, a large solar storm (think Carrington event or larger) could knock out the power grid. Where and how much it takes out would depend upon the size and strength of the storm. Keep in mind that while your cell phone or Ipad would still function, the communication systems would go down.
The US has about 2100 electrical transformers, with about 370 (rough estimate) of those as high voltage (HV) transformers.
Compounding this problem, these transformers are NOT one size fits all. The rule of thumb is that for every 13 transformers, there are 10 different designs. Graywolf wrote some exceptional articles on the dangers of planning for worst case scenarios only and not knowing what will happen if SHTF. Scientists have tried to simulate what would happen using computer models, but the hard data they have to base their calculations on is from the last high altitude nuclear EMP… in 1962. And of course much of that data, and the resulting computer simulations and theories are highly classified.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of data available to the general public on what all might be effected by an E1 pulse. For example, scientists are not sure if airplanes would be able to stay in the air after said pulse. Things such as the strength of the E1 pulse, the altitude and angle of the detonation from your vehicle, the current strength of the Earth’s ionosphere at your location (it fluctuates), the direction your vehicle was facing in relation to the denotation, etc all factor into the equation. As mentioned previously, the last nuclear EMP test was in 1962 and the details released have been minimal. Those vehicles were tested up to the level that some sort of upset occurred, then further testing was stopped on that vehicle. Also, it is widely believed within the scientific community (though not proven) that several nations have the ability to produce EMP weapons AT LEAST 4 to 5 times greater strengths than the test limits of the simulator. I’m not saying older model vehicles won’t work after an E1 pulse, rather that we cannot be 100% certain they will. Even if the nuke EMP doesn’t kill the electronics in all vehicles, there still would be problems.
A third problem is the fact that as vehicles die or run out of fuel, those remaining that are drivable suddenly increase in value exponentially. Scientists are beginning to study the correlation of solar storms to migraines and disrupted sleep cycles. I know I’m jumping the gun here but I wanted to give you a takeaway on some things you can do now and what you should start looking into doing. There are come critical items that you might want to consider putting critical items such as a ham radio in Faraday bag things get real bad. James will be going into much more detail on this in the next article, and this may turn out to be more than one article because it’s not a simple idea. Months before publication, One Second After has already been cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read, a book already being discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a truly realistic look at a weapon and its awesome power to destroy the entire United States, literally within one second. About James LA police officer in Oklahoma, James is a gun enthusiast and certified police instructor.
Maybe I am jumping the gun and this will be in part 3, but are there any applications or notification groups that send out information about upcoming CME events, and things of that nature? I wish I could tell you of some way to know about solar storms weeks or months in advance, but if I could do that I’ll be working for NASA making A LOT more than I am now. It’s also kinda scary how exposed our power grid really is, and the fact that it could be protected if the power companies really wanted to. James and Greywolf, thank you for putting together an informative series of articles and links.
I watched the events unfold after hurricane Katrina, as the looting and lawlessness played out on national TV. After the tornadoes took out Moore, Oklahoma last year, my department sent me there to help.
The BIG differences between the two, is that those who went to help after the tornadoes knew their families were ok.
Order wasn’t restored in New Orleans until people from outside the affected area (whose families were ok) arrived to help. My personal go bag contentsThere are a lot of different things you can put on your bug out bag list and there’s not really one list of contents that you should follow. How to communicate when the world goes silentSo if cell phones stopped working, how would you communicate? As you look around, you are aware that electricity and electronic devices have made permanent changes in how we all live. In fact, many people that lose access to electricity for one reason or another either wind up extremely sick or dead in a matter of weeks. Since an EMP will disrupt both electrical power distribution and ruin devices that use it, the wise prepper will do everything possible to prepare for an EMP blast. If you don’t know where to start your EMP preparations, then Survivopedia is the best place to look for answers. Since keeping your home warm or cool (depending on the season) tends to cost a lot of energy, this will be one place where you need to focus a good bit of attention. Add at least one foot of R-22 insulation to the walls (fiberglass, paper backed insulation is much cheaper than foam based insulation boards). Rebuild door frames, hinge areas, and window areas so that they do not allow air in or out, and keep a good supply of newspaper on hand to place in doors to help prevent cold air from getting in.
Choose and practice living in one room that has been properly weather proofed, and maintain a reasonable temperature with very few, if any heat resources.
Don’t forget that candles, kerosene stoves, wood stoves, propane stoves and others all consume oxygen. Use black and white to your advantage: black and dark colors absorb radiant energy while white and light colors reflect it.
Passive heating and cooling methods can give you approximately 20 degrees worth of stabilization and also substantially cut your power bills at the same time. Second, the easiest if not most effective way to prepare for an EMP based food shortage may well be to store away large quantities of food for one year survival.
Foods that will last for one year or more (dried and canned foods will work much better than frozen foods or ones that do not have a very long shelf life). To find out if your bin system will work, see if you can make it one month by eating only the foods in the bin and cooking only with resources that you will be using after an EMP has occurred. You may have to tweak the foods you choose to store away in order to develop a nutritious menu that will meet all your needs. Do not forget that some factors (such as radiation exposure, damage to the packages, and looting) can deprive you of your stores.
As time passes, you’ll find harder to obtain food in rural areas, especially as survivors move from the cities and over hunt, over fish, and over tax the soil. Overall, as a beginner, you may actually be better served by focusing on intensive container gardening. A passive solar heater using tin cans, glass, and a wooden frame, and it can act as a heating source for one room or many depending on how you arrange the pipes. A cinder block stove – You can create a reasonably durable and reliable stove using just four cinder blocks. Start a compost pile near your home – Compost piles generate a good bit of heat, it only takes a few coils of non-flammable piping to transport that heat indoors. Underground stoves – These can be as simple as pits dug into the ground, or they can integrate tin can rocket stoves into the design. These outdoor stoves are easy to build, durable, and can be used with different kind of fuel (twigs, chopped up bits of wood, dried leaves, grass, dung, or anything else that is flammable). If you live in a city, then you have seen homeless people and are aware of the methods they use to keep warm and cook any food they may find. In time of need, you are sure to realize that any ice in your freezer will melt, and then you will not be able to make more using conventional means. For the sake of simplicity, you can start off with a cardboard solar cooker, which can also be used for refrigeration during the night hours.
No matter whether you are accustomed to filtered water from the tap or rely on bottled water, there is bound to be a shortage of clean water after an EMP blast. Place at least one ? gallon jug in the toilet filled with water, to reduce the amount of water being used.
Once you have learned to conserve water, you will turn your attention to storage and collection.
If you have access to the outdoors, learn how to collect water vapor that rises from the soil. If you have to survive an EMP caused by a nuclear event, any water that you collect may not be suitable to drink even after you purify it using bleach, tablets, or some other form of chemical filtration. The simplest way to cover all your basis in an EMP (get rid of bacteria, chemicals, and all radioactive substances except Tritium) is to distill the water. Aside from using a still that require vast amounts of wood, propane, or some other fuel, you can also use a solar cooker with a plastic tent on it. After an EMP blast occurs, you are likely to find it impossible to make use of motorbikes, cars, and other motorized vehicles.
And even if you fully prepare your vehicle for an EMP blast, it still may not be capable of moving over the kinds of rough terrain that you might have to navigate in the post EMP world.
For short distance or extreme emergency transport, skateboards and skates may be of some help. Remember that in a nuclear attack, it is estimated you will have about ? hour before the radiation and compression waves catch up.
On the other hand, as the crisis unfolds, any number of problems can rob you of your mobility: injury from buildings falling apart as fires erupt as well as injuries sustained in altercations with rioters and looters.
If you choose one mobility aide, the most versatile aide is the rollating walker, which can be used just like a regular walker, or you can push the seat down and use it as a wheelchair. For individuals looking for a lower budget option, a shepherd’s staff might be of some help. If you live in a rural setting and have an independent leach field, then it is not likely you will need to worry about disruptions in the sewage system.
People living in a city setting will truly have a number of problems with sewage because the municipal systems are likely to overflow and contaminate the streets, water, and just about anything else that the sewage comes into contact with. Even if you avoid using municipal sewage, other people may still be dumping all kinds of things down the toilets and sink drains. The only way to stave off this problem is to make sure all of your drains (including the toilet) are set up with shut off valves. As for the waste disposal, more than a few people think they will burn almost all of their garbage and keep their house warm at the same time. Start off by finding out exactly what you throw away each day and break those items into categories.
If you have been following the news about terrorist attacks in Paris, then you may also be thinking a bit more about how you will manage personal safety. Many people rely on guns for personal safety, while newer technologies are beginning to overshadow conventional guns. When it comes right down to personal defense training, there is no such thing as winning a fight unless you know the rules of the game. Most self-defense classes will teach you how to disarm an attacker as well as how to attack if needed. If you have a GPS in your car, rely on the radio for traffic updates, or use your cell phone to get travel directions, then you will be at a huge disadvantage when an EMP takes out all the broadcasting stations, satellite links, and other infrastructure points that deliver this information to you. When you are trying to get out of a city, you will be challenged more by obstructions on the roads then actual navigational problems. Unless you only know how to navigate with a GPS system, you will find that it is not especially difficult to navigate after an EMP.
Also, many people preparing for an EMP crisis already know that cell phones, GPS systems, and many other electronic aides will become useless.  These very same people do not realize that there are also some very serious problems with other elements of the communications infrastructure. If you have a radio in your home, chances are it also relies on transistors, microchips, and other components that will be destroyed during an EMP.  In fact, even if you bought a weather or emergency radio that operates on crank power, there is also every chance that it will not withstand an EMP unless it has a built in Faraday cage, or was placed in one prior to the EMP. A spark gap transmitter can be built in such a way that it cannot be damaged by an EMP.  Unfortunately, it is illegal to maintain and operate one of these broad range transmitters because they can disrupt pacemakers and other sensitive electronic equipment. If you find it difficult, if not impossible to build up small radio networks, then you should at least know about basic signaling systems that may or may not help yougain and transmit information over short distances.
Even the most basic aspects of preparing for surviving an EMP can be complicated and require some effort.
While you are looking at this list, remember that it does not do much good to overly focus on one area of prepping at the expense of others. Preparing for all of these elements will take time, practice, and the willingness to do quite a bit of experimenting.

In layman’s terms, it is an intense burst of electromagnetic energy caused by an abrupt and rapid acceleration of charged particles. There are three things that we know cause EMPs: a bolt of lightning, a nuclear explosion (or EMP type weapon), and solar storms.
EMPs by high altitude detonation or CMEs are caused by the release of charged particles within the Earth’s ionosphere.
Anyway, a huge downward surge in particles in the ionosphere would create massive electrical currents which could “short out” all sorts of electrical power grids, transformers, and other equipment dependent on electricity. The first is the Carrington Event of 1859, which was the first documented event of a solar flare impacting Earth.
What is known is that the EMP from Test 184 knocked out a 600-mile underground power line (shielded) that was buried 3 feet underground. For the record, the nuclear warheads used in both above mentioned tests were not designed for EMP-related events. According to NASA, the CME disrupted electric power transmission from the Hydro Quebec generating station and even melted some power transformers in New Jersey. Scientists from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) have classified EMPs into 3 categories.
For the record, E1 type pulses are released by other stars in our galaxy and throughout the universe, but the chances of our planet being struck by such a pulse from another star are BEYOND MINISCULE. The other main difference between a nuclear EMP and a solar EMP, is that while a nuclear EMP may never happen, it is only a matter of time until a solar EMP does hit Earth.
This book will help you to prepare for two end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it (TEOTWAWKI) events: the EMP attack and the solar storm.
Fuel, communications, power, water, and food will be unavailable within hours when emergency fuel runs out.
Over the course of a decade, a stream of credible scientific reports from various government agencies, congressionally-mandated commissions and federal research organizations have warned of the grave vulnerability of our nation’s most important asset: the electric power grid. There have been warnings from scientists and other experts for years that the Nation’s electrical grid system and other critical infrastructures that have almost complete dependency on electricity and electronic components are highly vulnerable to an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) event either from natural or man-made causes. However, Congress and the administrations of previous and current presidents largely have ignored those warnings. The threat from an EMP attack on our critical infrastructures either from an impending solar storm of serious intensity – expected between 2012 and 2014 – or a high-altitude nuclear explosion are threats that could have long-term catastrophic consequences for our society and our way of life.
In 2008 a congressional commission studied the consequences of an EMP attack not only the power grid itself but also the consequences to every sector of our economy: telecommunications, banking, transportation, food, manufacturing, construction, and energy.
While these critical infrastructures continue to face such an impending crisis, Congress has basically ignored its own commission report and instead has treated the threat of an EMP event as a political football to be punted whenever expedient for their own gain.
While an EMP event on our civilian infrastructure could be serious, it can be managed if government at the federal, state, and local levels gives a high priority to undertake preventative action to lessen its impact to recover from such an event. I have worked in the IT industry for many years and some of that time was spent servicing government contracts. The government has put a lot of money into research in this area and as a result there is a lot of information available.
While my work mostly consisted of TEMPEST certified systems, many installations combine TEMPEST and EMP requirements together for obvious reasons. Personally I believe that this is a variant of Stingray being run in a general surveillance mode (As opposed to the way the FBI uses it) by some government agency like the NSA in cooperation with the military (most of them are near bases).
Yeah, I’m actually writing an article on exactly that right now, to include those cell towers, stingray, and personnel-worn IMSI fakers. Yes the CME that hit Canada was a third of the size of the Carrington one but it didn’t knock out power lines all over North America did it?
Oddly enough we’re about to get hit by a CME that was ejected yesterday when a Solar Plasma Filament was ejected in our direction. Here is an example of history of how auroras played havoc with wires from a site that archives solar flare news.
February 25, 1927 – In Geneva, villagers asked fire department to extinguish the aurora. April 14, 1927 – Aurora borealis isolates West from Eastern Canada [The New York Times, April 15, 1927 p.
October 13, 1927 – Freakish currents slow wire service [The New York Times, October 13, 1927, p.
July 8, 1928 – Telegraph lines are tied up by aurora borealis [Chicago Daily Tribune, July 8, 1928, p. I think that *terrorism* is why the government is so ultra paranoid on spying that they feel all Americans are suspicious. Eventually it will be to the point that there won’t even be parts for home computers so once yours breaks down you have to get either a smart phone or a tablet. The possibility of an EMP is increasing now that we are in contact in the Mid East with Russia.
Top 10 best selling prepper gear you should considerOccasionally, I want to let you know which prepper and survival gear is selling better than the rest. One of the scarier survival events that preppers need to be concerned about is an attack involving a High-altitude ElectroMagnetic Pulse, also called HEMP.  All nuclear weapons create EMP, but when detonated high in the atmosphere, the EMP generated is so massive that it can destroy electronics and permanently knock out the power grid across the entire country. However, unlike EMP, a CME event does not destroy electronic devices, unless they happen to be connected to the power grid or long lines that will collect the induced current.  For more on the differences between EMP and CME, you can read about it here. One test involved being on top of a mountain that was filled with radio antennas.  The collective power of all these radio towers was 9,000,000 watts of RF (Radio Frequency) energy!  Another test was standing at the base of a 50,000 watt AM station.
This means that you should be able to easily protect your electronic gear from EMP simply by wrapping it in aluminum foil.  I also found that placing the foil-wrapped radio inside a galvanized steel trash can greatly increased the effectiveness of the shielding. There needs to be a minimum of 3 layers of aluminum foil completely surrounding the device.
When you wrap your electronic device, it’s important to prevent it from touching the foil.
If the device has a removable battery, remove it and store it separately.  The last thing you want is to find out that the batteries leaked and ruined the equipment that you went to so much trouble to protect.
There may be links in the post above that are “affiliate links.” This means if you click on the link and purchase the item, I will receive an affiliate commission, which does not affect the price you pay for the product. I know a guy that insists that simply disconnecting a cars battery will protect the cars computer from an EMP. For Anne, battery backups, solar power tied to battery banks and generators will still run a lot of electronic equipment. Because an EMP (used here on to stand in for all three) event is seen as an electronics killer due to high current and voltages frequently mentioned, the concept of a protective cage standing against the monster surges becomes an automatic connection in the minds of many.
You see, the energy from an EMP doesn’t directly correlate to electricity as commonly known. It takes but a little time to read to understand that this threat is a different beast altogether, and has only little resemblance to a 120v outlet short circuit applied to a computer, TV or phone. This gasket is trapped in the lid, and when the can is closed, it serves as a stand-off between the body and lid mating surfaces.
Aluminum foil, folder over and over, with enough material to lay over the edges of the can, will work. To do adverse damage, it only requires one nuclear bomb detonated only 300 miles above the center of the United States or from a container ship in the Gulf of Mexico. Your cell phones and computers would most likely work…until they ran out of battery power, or unless they were directly connected to the power grid. So services that your Iphone and laptop are used for, ie the internet and cell coverage, would most likely be out. Should that happen and the grid across the planet is gone, it could take a lifetime to come back. Also, these different transformers are designed to handle different amounts of electric currents based upon where they are located. Scientists point out the fact that the Soviet EMP tests burned out many military grade diesel generators that did not have the solid state electronics.
Even if an E1 affected only 10% of  vehicles, imagine that one out of every ten cars on the road right now suddenly stopped.
But without any sort of actual tests, scientists do not know the full extent that the damage would cause.
It has been over 50 years since the last actual tests, and most of the data and simulator tests remain classified. In his off time, he is a single father who enjoys playing with his kids and watching football.
I try to stay current on what new products have been introduced and look for the old and trusted. Neither is expected to be a Carrington event or anything, but it’s a timely reminder that this stuff can and will happen eventually.
They have have two other satellites in Earth’s orbit but several months behind which help trianglate the solar weather. The question is how resilient and resourceful people will be in working around the problems. As more and more emergency personnel (and people who provide important services) leave to go protect their families, people will be left to fend for themselves. I grew up in the woods and spent a lifetime in various environments from deserts to jungles to politically-sensitive urban environments, and I'm here to tell you what I know.
When considering disaster preparedness, keep in mind that what survival gear and emergency supplies you add to your bug out bag and then pack for your survival kit can mean the difference between life and death, or at least affect your level of comfort if SHTF and you had to get outta dodge. Each item in your kit will depend on your skill set and what you’re trying to prepare for. It is one thing to say you can do without electricity, and then actually be able to achieve that goal. No matter whether they areunable to refrigerate foods or keep the house warm, surviving without electricity may not be as easy as it looks. There are a number of “passive” unexpensive methods to keep your home warm or cool, and they can cut your heating bill by as much as 50 – 75% even on regular times.
As long as you do not have furniture in the room that will fade in the sunlight, it is fine to choose windows that will let the maximum amount of light and heat in. No matter how new or tight your windows may be, the seals may become brittle and the frames will lose their tight fit as the house settles.
No matter how much you may want to save on heating bills, it will do you no good if mold, fungi, and mildew build up in the walls because there is not enough air circulating. Always remember that heat rises, therefore the roof will always be prime escape point for heat that you may be trying to conserve. Don’t create a completely airtight seal in the room because carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide levels can build up to lethal levels very quickly.
Carpets, furniture drapes, and many other internal objects can become heat retainers or reflectors if you pay attention to this one small factor alone.
Just be sure to use good quality materials and do what you can to get the best prices on installation and labor. Unless you have a year’s worth of food stored away and already eat enough to ensure fresh rotation, it is not likely that stockpiling will be a viable answer.
Start off by purchasing airtight bins that will hold at least 30 gallons, and fill one bin with enough food to last for one month. Once you arrive at the proper ingredients for your bin, repeat the formula for at least 11 more bins, and this will give you a year’s worth of food that can be stored even in a medium to large sized apartment.
You must also have some kind of plan in place for what you will do when your stored food supplies run out. Not only will you be able to triple or quadruple normal production amounts, container gardening also forms an excellent basis for setting up a hydroponics system.
If you circulate water through the pipes, add water carrying radiators in each room to disperse the heat. If you have enough wood or other materials, these stoves are easy to build and may be more efficient than above ground camp fires.
Keep supplies on hand to make it easier to start a fire: magnifying lens, tea lights, dried pine cone, or waterproof matches and tinder cloth. In a survival situation, you will still need to switch to ice or some other method during the day hours.
It requires heating it up to a point where it turns to steam, and then collecting the water droplets in a clean container. If you do some experiments with plastic bottles, you’ll see how to use natural sunlight to make water evaporate faster, and then collect the clean water in a chamber away from the main heating area. Even if they are not destroyed by the EMP, you will not be able to use them on the main roads until all of the broken down cars are removed. Use alternative forms of transport that you might want to consider: sled dogs, horses, other animals used for transport, or a rugged bike that can go over rough. While they may seem slow, there is no question they will get you further and faster than running. You can double, or even triple you distance of travel with a skateboard or skates when compared to walking or running. Even though the wheeled part is best used indoors and on smooth surfaces, it can help you get around your home in time of need. Just keep some sludge removers on hand so that you can put off cleaning out the tank as long as possible. The simplest thing you can do is keep a portable composting toilet on hand to use in time of need. Overflowing sewers will eventually back up and spew all kinds of noxious materials right into your home. As soon as an EMP hits, you will be well served by closing these valves so that sewage cannot get into your home. Next, figure out alternative means for disposing of each waste type, or even repurpose it in a survival situation.
In the instance of personal defense the first rule is, and always will be situation awareness.
Martial artscan give you plenty of moves as well as training in weapons that can be far more effective at close range than guns. Never underestimate the value of even a few classes, because they can save your life now and also in the post EMP world.
You can still use compasses and other items to help you determine which direction to go in.
Before you go tromping through an area, always be aware that nervous people may be in the woods and will not recognize that you mean them no harm.
In fact, even if you do not have a map, you can still use landmarks for navigation and other methods to help you get to a generalized location. Even though these signaling methods are usually used for rescue needs, they can also be used to transmit information in your local area.
In many cases, these beginning tips will also give you plenty of room to expand into more advanced topics and training.
For example, many people today are more concerned with food, water, and guns, yet completely forget that an EMP crisis may also involve trying to navigate, and maintain a comfortable room temperature.
If you get started now, you will be that much further along in the process, and hopefully more confident in  your abilities to survive an EMP and thrive in the post crisis world. The internet is filled with web pages telling you want you should or should not do in case of one. I’ll tell you what we know about them, and more importantly, what we DON’T know,  how a nuclear EMP is different than a solar or CME (coronal mass ejection) EMP, and try to dispel some myths surrounding them.
Such a pulse may occur in the form of a radiated electric or magnetic field or conducted electrical current depending on the source, and may be natural or man-made. The ionosphere is the shell of electrons and electrically charged particles surrounding Earth. The four that will I mention here (2 from CME and 2 from nuclear detonation) are usually the most referenced. In 1962, the US government launched a 1.4 megaton nuclear warhead about 250 miles into the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean.
A powerful solar flare set off a major power blackout that left six million people without electricity for about nine hours.
The Earth has a better chance of being hit by a large asteroid than it does an E1 pulse from another star.

In part two of this series, I will look at what these types of pulses mean to us, what they are capable of doing, and what all we still do not know about them. What about if the Sun emitted a large coronal mass ejection that resulted in a damaging geomagnetic storm? Each threat is carefully studied with analyses of its likelihood and potential impacts on our nation’s critical infrastructures. The shielding effectiveness of homemade Faraday cages is measured and compared, including metal garbage cans, foil-wrapped boxes, fire safes, static bags, ammo cans, and microwave ovens. For millions of us, life in 21st Century America would be all but impossible without access to electricity.
Events such as the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the United States and then the devastating Hurricane Katrina that revealed vulnerabilities to those infrastructures heightened that concern.
He even outlines how our own military is similarly vulnerable to an EMP event due to its 99 percent dependency on the nation’s electrical grid system for electricity and communications, raising the high prospect that it may not be able to function to defend the nation in its time of greatest need.
I have been following these stories since I first became aware of the possibility some years ago. If that is the case then whoever is on the opposite side of the globe would be left pretty much untouched. The Earth’s own magnetic field has an affect on where and how much Solar events penetrate. I get about 50-100 spam comments per day so I have to use a program to filter out those or I’d be on here all day just reading comments. They probably think for whatever reason wheather real or made up that there is some kind of *movement* going on against them so all Americans are to be spied on as a result and what better way to do it then to push smart phones and tablets to kill the home computer!
Most websites are designed to be dumbed down for smart phone viewing anyways and Google has made it a rule too or your site won’t be ranked which is why sites are small and narrow to read.
If they use an orbital EMP weapon, the primary target would, in all probability, be Cheyenne mountain, at enough altitude to induce a secondary desired effect in the collapse of the national grid. Because of this, many preppers are interested in EMP protection measures for their electronics. Followed closely, I think, by how to manage those devices that don’t have removable batteries, but you want to store anyway.
There has been no hard-core conclusive testing on vehicles, so a lot of what scientists and engineers talk about are only educated guesses. The problem arises in the fact that I am not so sure modern day gasoline pumps have manual capabilities. The assumption is that such a barrier will block all effects of the three events mentioned previously.
For those that don’t make the seemingly obvious connection, there are always others ready to supply it for them. There is no socket, no power strip and no extension cord connected to a power source with evil intentions for our electronics. This stand off creates an nearly perfect uniform gap that is transparent to the pulse effect. When rolled correctly, it will crush and resist crushing – pressing up against the lid and forcing you to apply a good amount of downward pressure just to close it. If you lay a solder wire along the gap as a barricade, it will help hold the melting solder near where it should be, and join into the effort.
After the box is closed, with its rubber gasket remaining in place, tape the box closed with 2″ aluminum duct tape. And yet, few American lawmakers seriously think about this.A comparison to this would be the existent aircraft carriers in 1941 that few people had seen as a real threat to the country. But in addition to plenty of food and water, you would need enough guns and ammo to hold off looters for months. In that case, I hope you know how to farm because the planet just went back in time to the 1800s. Even some older planes that don’t use computers for basic flight controls still require electronics to assist with things such as the hydraulics. In addition, newly unclassified reports state that some of the vehicles in Hawaii at the time of the Star Fish Prime test had their non-electronic ignition systems damaged by the EMP.
And even if you stockpile fuel, in optimal conditions, gas won’t keep from more than 6 months, 1 year max. The more current simulations and some theories on this remain highly classified as I mentioned previously. In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future…and our end. Many EMP articles conflate E1, E2, and E3 pulses and don’t provide many clues on how one would deal with them. For example, the guys who used a car battery, an automotive fuel pump, and rubber hose to access stored gasoline at gas stations when Hurricane Sandy disrupted electric power to the pumps.
It may be chaos for a short while but there are always enterprising and charismatic people to take the helm and start rebuilding with whatever’s available. Here’s what Graywolf from Graywolf Survival carries and why, as well as some suggestions on how to plan your EDC kit.
Insulate floors and add heavy carpets, install carpet hangings on the walls or other decorations that will seal off the rooms.
If you routinely close off the attic or other upstairs floors, then feel free to put plastic down on the floors in order to form a heat barrier.
It absorbs heat well and can also help keep a warmer, less dry temperature in any room that features an aquarium. And if you stockpile and others find out, they come to your home and try to take your food. As long as you have a viable means of producing food, don’t take a chance of getting hit by looters or anyone else that might want to steal from you. You can also grow container gardens in just about any location, including inner city apartments and other areas where land and other resources may not be available.
The rocket stove is usually used in outdoor settings, however you may use it indoors if you have sufficient ventilation.
Take the time now to get to know your neighbors so that in a crisis, you have the chance of moving among them safely. If you are stuck in the city, it take much more time before you can get into a location where water be more available.
As an added bonus, this type of staff also makes for a powerful weapon if you know how to use it. If you have access to land, keep a few compost bins, and use it to grow houseplants that can be consumed for food or medicinal needs. You have to know where you are in the city so that you continue to move outward instead of moving deeper into it. In some cases, it can even cause physical damage to things such as buildings, airplanes, power lines, etc. This surge of electricity can damage your electronics that you may have plugged into the wall sockets of your home.
EDT on Sept., 1 and is named after Richard Carrington, the solar astronomer who witnessed the event through his telescope.
Practical preparations are outlined, including steps to meet the fourteen basic needs in the absence of modern utilities, and the use of Faraday cages and uninterruptible power supplies to protect personal electronics. Mob violence from mass evacuation of uninhabitable metropolitan areas will be a significant security issue within days. As this compendium of the government’s own studies makes clear, the protracted unavailability of the power required for all of our critical infrastructures poses a truly existential threat to our country and its people—unless we take practical and relatively low-cost steps to prevent it.
Due to the lapse of time and a relatively calm period since those disasters, policymakers have been lulled back into complacency rather than take preventative action against what could be the biggest threat to US national and economic security in our lifetime. The Snowden revelations have served to confirm what many people in the IT industry suspected for years. I understand it would cost (only) about 2 billion (the amount we give to Pakistan) to fix this problem.
Maine and Florida may escape unscathed, but we all need to prepare in every way possible, from whole house surge protectors to faraday type shielding. This is currently the list of the top 10 best-selling prepper and survival gear items, along with an explanation for each. Granted, these are very educated guesses, but there’s enough dispute among them to be able to derive a conclusive answer from it. We can not stand in where a current seeks to fry our gadgets, and direct it out and around.
Depending on the environment, it might even act as a slot antenna, which will actually assist a pulse in penetrating the can. If you go that route, consider the operating specs for the gasket, and be sure the one you buy will operate as designed within the gap you place it. As an option, the smaller boxes can be stacked against the back wall, and a false wall, metal of course, sealed against it.
Any seams can be closed off with typical conductive gaskets used in higher end computer equipment chassis. Most military and civilian personnel viewed the role of these carriers as a platform to launch targets, planes and to support battleships. That’s because after an EMP, the two biggest killers are starvation and starving people.
Hundreds of thousands would die in the first few minutes because of all the commercial airliners that would crash. While you could technically argue that I drove a pickup and not a car, the end result is that I’m in Houston and I drove there.
Because devices such as mobile phones, MP3 players, and remote-controlled toys, can emit electromagnetic radiation that could adversely affect an aircraft’s navigation and communication systems and actually endanger a flight. But in Part III, we will look at some general things you can do to try and be prepared should we ever experience an EMP. Here is a copy of the Report of the commission to assess the threat to the united states from electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack that you can download and read for yourself: Report of the commission to assess the threat to the united states from electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack.
However, in the end they’re electromagnetic energy at power levels not normally experienced except near a lightning strike. Anyone who says that their number one priority isn’t to their family needs to reevaluate their life. The size of the ionosphere can fluctuate some based on varying factors I won’t get into here. Although the warhead was not as powerful as the one from Star Fish Prime, it was exploded about 180 miles over the populated area of Kazakhstan.
But these may or may not be strong enough to have dire consquences for Earthlings.) Most are usually pointing off in a direction that does not effect Earth.
For these devices, I think it’s just a matter of having to have the discipline to take these out every 30 to 60 days and charge them up. EMP energy is created and delivered in manners unrelated to a power company suddenly turned vicious with the electronics-taser-of-death. It may not be reusable without a reforming, so be careful about opening the can to inspect things.
But the end result is a PERFECT seal that will allow you to use a desiccant in the can to control moisture. In this way, the stock doors at the other end can be closed and secured as always, giving you easy access, and hopefully keeping most bad guys out. There was no one who considered this as a serious and potential threat of possibly grouping six of these carriers and launching a full-fledged attack at the beginning of a war.We now know that this belief was changed forever when it became too late for the lives of approximately 3,000 Americans on the Day of Infamy. Within an hour, all the people on life support in hospitals would die (the hospitals’ backup generators would be useless). The main difference between E1 and lightning is pulse rise time is much faster so there is more energy in the HF and VHF region where relatively short wires are efficient antennas.
The EMP was so intense that it was not accurately measured because “it drove much of the instrumentation off scale”. As a result, much of the protection that equipment has against an E2 might have been damaged from the initial E1 pulse in the event of a nuclear or weaponized EMP. They have different impacts on technology and are affected differently by the Earth’s magnetosphere.
In effect, the tape is held slightly above the can’s surface by a measurement equal to the thickness of the glue.
The next wave of deaths would happen less than a week later when people start killing each other over whatever food is left. My gut feel is that the Engine Control Module in cars is robust enough to handle lightning, but the car wiring harness will pick up more energy from an E1 pulse. A widespread power outage could take years to restore because the EMP destroys electronics including circuits and transformers. Blocking all means to escape the zone and later bio weapon the empty cities, swamps, forest, mountain areas and etc. Because of the hatred and extremism displayed in the past, we should be actively cautious by taking measures to develop EMP survival methods that will save the masses. Here is what would happen with the threat of a solitary EMP weapon and why it is extremely dangerous to the fiber of our country. What’s sad is that the country could prepare for this potential end-of-the-world scenario, but Congress will never spend the money required.
But basically, the E1 pulse could NOT directly hurt someone physically except in a very specific set of circumstances. It would be a good idea to have one in storage and wrapping the spare in aluminum foil before putting it on the shelf is probably more than adequate protection.
I would have concerns if it were the only shielding, and also regarding interior condensation from stagnant and humid air. If you are decent at fabrication, that false wall may have its own resealable door built into it.
There is the severe possibility that we may never be able to reestablish our infrastructure.
It’s possible to shield electronics from an EMP by gold-plating all the essential components.
So you can see from this overview they have no plans to harden from an EMP and etc on the inside. If you wish to go one extra mile, remove the paint between the lid and body just outside the rubber gasket, press rolled foil into that space, and seal with the tape. The military could EMP proof enough trucks, trains and planes to transport food and maintain order throughout the country, but the cost would be in the hundreds of billions. And why spend hundreds of billions on a disaster that might never happen when the TSA needs new scanners? The vast and delicate infrastructure in the United States that we have spent so much time and money to create would be adversely affected.
In fact, an EMP is so powerful that even things that aren’t plugged in—cell phones, portable radios, electronic ignition systems in cars, etc—would get fried, too. However, it should be obvious that you would need ways to purify water, a huge food storage cache, and self defense and security measures. Those in hospitals, nursing homes and hospices will feel the effect soon after because the attack would trigger heart attacks, and severe illness for those waiting on transplants, dialysis and other ailments.Essential steps to takeThere are specific things that can be done to counteract or get ready for anything like this happening.
These include:Simple training – Americans have become so dependent on others passing orders down to them.
First responders should be highly trained to detect an EMP strike and have a contingency plan to know what they should do first and consecutively after. One of the steps should be grabbing the supplies at all vet’s office across the nation, for example. The Katrina hurricane should teach us a lesson of how confusing and disorganized it can get when a disaster happens.
No longer is it the steel plants or mills that are important to secure, but our communication systems, computer systems and electrical power.Citizens should contact their local congressmen and demand attention to being prepared for possibleIf our enemies are able to obtain one nuclear bomb, it goes without saying that they will attempt to use it – without a second thought.
