The sudden change in energy levels can, and will, literally fry electrical circuits of computers, cars and other electrical appliances. I hope that by now, you can see that a specialized protective container specifically suited for EMP survivability should be used in place of the Faraday cage. Protection by means of complete and nu-penetrated enclosure is far more important than the ready ability to open the container. An alternative to a commercial gasket, which will need to form a solid union where each end comes together, is a home built crush gasket. A second method is to flip the EMP Box over onto it top, and melt plumber’s solder into the gap. A third method allows you to get into the box quickly, but might not work against a very strong pulse. A larger metal container used solely as a large EMP box will need to include, in its preparation, the usual sealing methods. In Part One of this series, I looked at what an EMP is, and the 3 types of EMPs (Electro Magnetic Pulse).
Before I begin, I want to note that it has been pointed out to me that there are some technical differences between a nuclear E3 pulse and a solar storm.
As I explained in the first part, a high altitude nuclear explosion or weaponized EMP would most likely contain all three types of pulses, where as a CME would only contain the characteristics of an E3 type pulse. The E3 component will geomagnetically induce currents in long electrical conductors, which can then damage or destroy components such as power line transformers and burn out power grid transformers by inducing DC-like currents. What this means is, the E1 pulse of a nuclear EMP has the potential to damage electronic equipment, computers, communication equipment, etc.
The E3 type pulse would primarily affect the power grid, and is not likely to harm things like cell phones, computers, or vehicles unless they were directly connected to the power grid. If the CME was large enough, it could induce geomagnetic currents that could destroy a substantial fraction of the very largest transformers on the power grid (possibly over much of the world in a solar EMP). Basically, a large solar storm (think Carrington event or larger) could knock out the power grid. Where and how much it takes out would depend upon the size and strength of the storm.
Keep in mind that while your cell phone or Ipad would still function, the communication systems would go down. The US has about 2100 electrical transformers, with about 370 (rough estimate) of those as high voltage (HV) transformers.
Compounding this problem, these transformers are NOT one size fits all. The rule of thumb is that for every 13 transformers, there are 10 different designs.
Graywolf wrote some exceptional articles on the dangers of planning for worst case scenarios only and not knowing what will happen if SHTF. Scientists have tried to simulate what would happen using computer models, but the hard data they have to base their calculations on is from the last high altitude nuclear EMP… in 1962.
And of course much of that data, and the resulting computer simulations and theories are highly classified. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of data available to the general public on what all might be effected by an E1 pulse. For example, scientists are not sure if airplanes would be able to stay in the air after said pulse.
Things such as the strength of the E1 pulse, the altitude and angle of the detonation from your vehicle, the current strength of the Earth’s ionosphere at your location (it fluctuates), the direction your vehicle was facing in relation to the denotation, etc all factor into the equation.
As mentioned previously, the last nuclear EMP test was in 1962 and the details released have been minimal.
Those vehicles were tested up to the level that some sort of upset occurred, then further testing was stopped on that vehicle. Also, it is widely believed within the scientific community (though not proven) that several nations have the ability to produce EMP weapons AT LEAST 4 to 5 times greater strengths than the test limits of the simulator. I’m not saying older model vehicles won’t work after an E1 pulse, rather that we cannot be 100% certain they will. Even if the nuke EMP doesn’t kill the electronics in all vehicles, there still would be problems.
A third problem is the fact that as vehicles die or run out of fuel, those remaining that are drivable suddenly increase in value exponentially. Scientists are beginning to study the correlation of solar storms to migraines and disrupted sleep cycles. I know I’m jumping the gun here but I wanted to give you a takeaway on some things you can do now and what you should start looking into doing. Eventually it will be to the point that there won’t even be parts for home computers so once yours breaks down you have to get either a smart phone or a tablet.
The possibility of an EMP is increasing now that we are in contact in the Mid East with Russia. Identifying the systems that would probably fail if there were a strong-enough EMP from either a massive solar CME, a nuclear EMP weapon, or a tactical EMP bomb, is easier to speculate than  items that might survive an EMP.
Also, an EMP will be carried through overhead power lines (at the speed of light) and could instantaneously overwhelm power transformers along the grid with excess electrical current, causing the windings of the transformers to melt into a molten blob.


After all that, the simple answer to what items might survive, are those items that do not contain semiconductors! If the device you are wondering about contains any digital interface whatsoever, then you can probably kiss it good-bye. Natural gas heat… The utility gas pressure will probably remain for awhile, but electronic thermostats or gas valve controllers may fry. Any car made with electronic ignition and fuel injection will probably stop in it’s tracks. Generally speaking, ranging from tools, to appliances, to heaters, to vehicles… if it has electronic circuits, it is vulnerable to EMP. While the threat of an EMP to the degree of mass outages is apparently slim, the fact is that it is not zero. A more likely scenario is that Iran does attack Israel and begins a nuclear war in the Mideast which ignites a wider spread of nuclear attacks. Your scenario of 24 EMP devices being necessary to take down the US could be accurate if those devices were used at very low altitude. A solar EMP is a very real possibility and powerful enough to destroy our electric power distribution system and virtually all electrical equipment. My Vespa P200 scooter is made in 1977 and was the first model to be sold without a point-ignition. Check for yourself: if the cable running to the sparkplug come from a sealed block of plastic, than chances are that it has an electronic ignition. It will make little difference in the outcome whether or not the device is powered up, plugged in, or not. I understand how a magnet destroys a processor, and literally and physically bends and destroys the connections of hard drives and interface connections. Because an EMP (used here on to stand in for all three) event is seen as an electronics killer due to high current and voltages frequently mentioned, the concept of a protective cage standing against the monster surges becomes an automatic connection in the minds of many.
You see, the energy from an EMP doesn’t directly correlate to electricity as commonly known. It takes but a little time to read to understand that this threat is a different beast altogether, and has only little resemblance to a 120v outlet short circuit applied to a computer, TV or phone.

I’ll tell you what we know about them, and more importantly, what we DON’T know,  how a nuclear EMP is different than a solar or CME (coronal mass ejection) EMP, and try to dispel some myths surrounding them. Such a pulse may occur in the form of a radiated electric or magnetic field or conducted electrical current depending on the source, and may be natural or man-made. The ionosphere is the shell of electrons and electrically charged particles surrounding Earth. The four that will I mention here (2 from CME and 2 from nuclear detonation) are usually the most referenced. In 1962, the US government launched a 1.4 megaton nuclear warhead about 250 miles into the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean. A powerful solar flare set off a major power blackout that left six million people without electricity for about nine hours. The Earth has a better chance of being hit by a large asteroid than it does an E1 pulse from another star. In part two of this series, I will look at what these types of pulses mean to us, what they are capable of doing, and what all we still do not know about them.
What about if the Sun emitted a large coronal mass ejection that resulted in a damaging geomagnetic storm?
Each threat is carefully studied with analyses of its likelihood and potential impacts on our nation’s critical infrastructures. The shielding effectiveness of homemade Faraday cages is measured and compared, including metal garbage cans, foil-wrapped boxes, fire safes, static bags, ammo cans, and microwave ovens.
For millions of us, life in 21st Century America would be all but impossible without access to electricity. I have been following these stories since I first became aware of the possibility some years ago.
If that is the case then whoever is on the opposite side of the globe would be left pretty much untouched. The Earth’s own magnetic field has an affect on where and how much Solar events penetrate. I get about 50-100 spam comments per day so I have to use a program to filter out those or I’d be on here all day just reading comments. They probably think for whatever reason wheather real or made up that there is some kind of *movement* going on against them so all Americans are to be spied on as a result and what better way to do it then to push smart phones and tablets to kill the home computer! Most websites are designed to be dumbed down for smart phone viewing anyways and Google has made it a rule too or your site won’t be ranked which is why sites are small and narrow to read. If they use an orbital EMP weapon, the primary target would, in all probability, be Cheyenne mountain, at enough altitude to induce a secondary desired effect in the collapse of the national grid. When considering disaster preparedness, keep in mind that what survival gear and emergency supplies you add to your bug out bag and then pack for your survival kit can mean the difference between life and death, or at least affect your level of comfort if SHTF and you had to get outta dodge. The power lines will also carry the EMP (at the speed of light) far and wide into homes and businesses in search of semiconductors to fry.
Some basic-style natural gas heaters, such as wall units, could be lit manually though – until the pressure runs out. This basically leaves hand tools, hand operated or primitive appliances, wood stove heat, and old vehicles. If on the other hand the spark plug cable runs to a stator-plate, behind the flywheel, you will have a point igintion.
From the research I’ve done, commercial airlines are now computer controlled and use electricity to fly, which means that when EMP hits, they would be shut down. However, a pulse that is induced in any above-ground wiring may also end up traveling along in underground wiring – assuming that much of the overall system structure is interconnected. North,South, do u really think its going to matter when its total chaos with everyone starving to death, if your not underground like all the elite have already planned for, you will be soon! To the few of you who have not, this is but a small amount of information that might help you survive an EMP-related TEOTWAWKI. Most countries do NOT have sufficient nuclear power to set ablaze large countries such as the United-States or Canada. Basic skills such as gardening, power-generation, raising livestock and building structures are essential, but gathering and preserving food, as well as treating water on a long-term basis must not be neglected. To rely on electricity is to trust international corporations and a corrupted government when it comes to basic needs such as eating, drinking and heating your home. If a regional-scale event caused such a chaos on a mid-sized city, imagine what it would do if the whole east-coast was to be in the dark for a year. The assumption is that such a barrier will block all effects of the three events mentioned previously. For those that don’t make the seemingly obvious connection, there are always others ready to supply it for them.
There is no socket, no power strip and no extension cord connected to a power source with evil intentions for our electronics. This stand off creates an nearly perfect uniform gap that is transparent to the pulse effect.
When rolled correctly, it will crush and resist crushing – pressing up against the lid and forcing you to apply a good amount of downward pressure just to close it. If you lay a solder wire along the gap as a barricade, it will help hold the melting solder near where it should be, and join into the effort. After the box is closed, with its rubber gasket remaining in place, tape the box closed with 2″ aluminum duct tape.
But in addition to plenty of food and water, you would need enough guns and ammo to hold off looters for months.


In that case, I hope you know how to farm because the planet just went back in time to the 1800s. Even some older planes that don’t use computers for basic flight controls still require electronics to assist with things such as the hydraulics. In addition, newly unclassified reports state that some of the vehicles in Hawaii at the time of the Star Fish Prime test had their non-electronic ignition systems damaged by the EMP.
And even if you stockpile fuel, in optimal conditions, gas won’t keep from more than 6 months, 1 year max. The more current simulations and some theories on this remain highly classified as I mentioned previously.

Many EMP articles conflate E1, E2, and E3 pulses and don’t provide many clues on how one would deal with them. It may be chaos for a short while but there are always enterprising and charismatic people to take the helm and start rebuilding with whatever’s available. Due to the lapse of time and a relatively calm period since those disasters, policymakers have been lulled back into complacency rather than take preventative action against what could be the biggest threat to US national and economic security in our lifetime. The Snowden revelations have served to confirm what many people in the IT industry suspected for years.
I understand it would cost (only) about 2 billion (the amount we give to Pakistan) to fix this problem. Maine and Florida may escape unscathed, but we all need to prepare in every way possible, from whole house surge protectors to faraday type shielding. Even if there is no digital interface, there could still very well be semiconductors or electronic circuits somewhere inside.
The planes will drop like flies, and according to the One Second after website, 250,000 to 500,000 people would die when the planes crash. This is something that I am interested to explore further – that is, how much would it take to burn out these diodes. A typical older vehicle with a solid metal body, using a ground strap connected to a grounding rod could be an example, but note that the ground is important, since you can’t actually insulate against EMF, but you can divert the pulse around sensitive components to ground.
For servers it wouldn’t take much, but generator or a turbine, i mean hell the blaste from a grenade could do that.
Russian bombers had 3o year old tube radios found in them when other countries radios were modern semi conductor. The author does not consider himself to be an expert about this matter, but would like to share his little bit of wisdom about what he sees as the most potential survival scenario to happen in the next few years, months maybe.
The best and most reliable way to ruin these countries, considering they completely depend on electricity, would be to launch a 1MT nuclear warhead in space above North-America (see graph), rather than destroy MAYBE 0.1% of their industrial capacities with above-ground-detonations like in Hiroshima.
Since it is one of the most credible man-caused TEOTWAWKI scenarios, I strongly suggest that every survivalist consider it when prepping. If not, you’ll need to walk all the way to the nearest stream and then back to your shelter with several gallons of water, which is very energy and time-consuming.
A hobo stove is good, but a cast-iron wood stove is better, and you can use the chimney conducts to heat ALL of your home with these hot pipes. We can not stand in where a current seeks to fry our gadgets, and direct it out and around. Depending on the environment, it might even act as a slot antenna, which will actually assist a pulse in penetrating the can. If you go that route, consider the operating specs for the gasket, and be sure the one you buy will operate as designed within the gap you place it.

Any seams can be closed off with typical conductive gaskets used in higher end computer equipment chassis. That’s because after an EMP, the two biggest killers are starvation and starving people. Hundreds of thousands would die in the first few minutes because of all the commercial airliners that would crash.
While you could technically argue that I drove a pickup and not a car, the end result is that I’m in Houston and I drove there. Because devices such as mobile phones, MP3 players, and remote-controlled toys, can emit electromagnetic radiation that could adversely affect an aircraft’s navigation and communication systems and actually endanger a flight.
