Tornadoes, flash flooding, and other inclement weather are all very real possibilities in North Texas, which makes preparing ahead for these potential emergencies extremely important for homeowners. It may seem unimportant, but organization can have a real impact on your family’s emergency plan.
When natural disasters strike, being prepared can sometimes make the difference between life and death. First aid supplies and medications should also be stockpiled if possible – purchase a first aid kit for each member of your family, and add extra supplies to it throughout the year. If your home has been overtaken by clutter, it could be dangerous in the event of an emergency. Securing your family’s important documents is one of the most crucial components of disaster preparedness.
Protecting your family in the event of an emergency is your number one priority, and clutter shouldn’t stand in the way. Designed to support two full-sized adult individuals for as long as 3 days, this kit still maintains portability and readiness.

What is a Flexible Spending Account (FSA)?A FSA (Flexible Spending Account) allows use of the funds an individual has designated to be set aside pre-tax for medical expenses, typically with their employer, when selecting healthcare programs during the previous year. Note: Although the IRS sets guidelines for FSA programs, individual employers have the final determination of which expenses are covered by their FSA programs. Call a family meeting and turn it into a scavenger hunt to collect all of your items throughout the next couple months or years.
Several years ago I thought I would be proactive (since we live in tornado country) and put together 72-hour kits. Especially with a 3 year old, there are many things that would otherwise be forgotten in the time of an emergency if not for pre planning.

I have been meaning to do this for quite awhile now – and now is the time to get started on it!!!!
After seeing all the useful stuff you have in your bin, I’m now going to repurpose a large strapped duffle bag (rectangular and zippered) for getting organized. I literally wake up every few months, in the middle of the night, thinking about putting one together. I have a section of the basement with non-perishable food and water stored, but we keep our flashlights, etc. My husband has been asking me to get this together for at least 3 years and I’ve never made it a priority. Having an established emergency preparedness plan is important, but there are also small ways to make your home more safe if bad weather strikes.
If your home is neatly organized and supplies are easy to find, It’s likely that ultimately, your family will be safer.
It isn’t necessary to become one of the Doomsday Preppers in order to be prepared for an emergency, but you will need to keep some supplies on hand. It may also be a good idea to invest in a weather radio – cell phones and other technologies could be unusable during a storm, but this old-school staple will be as reliable as ever.
Messy, unorganized rooms can make it much more difficult to find necessary items in the aftermath of severe weather.
In advance of severe weather season, you can go through each room of your house and assess what needs to be kept, tossed, and donated. Once you’ve gathered food, water and other survival supplies, begin preparing a binder with all of your family’s important paperwork. Add a divider in your binder for each member of the family, and store two copies of each document in plastic sheet protectors. A little organization can go a long way in making sure that your home is ready for whatever comes its way. With double the nutritional provision of the 1 Person 3 Day Kit, blankets and lightsticks for two, and even more comprehensive first aid, the 2 Person kit is the premier kit for small household survival. The estimated delivery time will be approximately 3 - 5 business days from the time of order. An additional Shipping and Handling fee will apply to shipments going to Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico. If you are unable to return your order at one of our warehouses, please contact Customer Service. Many of these items you probably already have multiples of in your house and you can just grab the extra and throw it into your kit!  It doesn’t have to be brand name items and it doesn’t have to be overly-complicated, but there is a certain sense of peace that comes once this is completed and you know you are prepared! I think it’s a great idea and now that I have a great example to follow, I’m looking forward to getting my family involved in putting this together!! I am often overwhelmed when I think about prepping for emergencies (and where we live, it’s hard to feel much urgency!

My daughter took a new one to school with her each year with a letter from me included explaining in the event of an emergency we’d come get her as soon as possible.
We do have an emergency kit, but my husband has so much stuff it’s in several different bins.
These three emergency organization strategies may take a little time, but they could make a big difference in how quickly you can respond to a disaster. Each year, take inventory of your emergency stash and see what needs to be replenished or updated. While you’re decluttering, you can also make mental notes of where important things you’ll need during an emergency will be, like extra linens, clothes and pet supplies.
These documents include birth certificates, Social Security cards, property deeds, marriage licenses, wills, passports and any medical records you may have.
Welcome to my little computer home where I share my family's adventures as we live life from the slow lane!
Where I live we don’t get a lot of natural disasters, but there are wind storms and power outages.
My start includes a multipurpose tool, moist towelettes, spare socks and a couple of rain ponchos.
Stock up on bottled water, non-perishable food, batteries, flashlights and other supplies that you’ll need to survive a tornado or hurricane. Organizing your home can make a world of difference – when the power goes out, it’s nice to know exactly where to find the batteries for your flashlight. Store the originals away in a fire-proof safe with other valuables, and make sure that each member of the family knows where to find it.
If someone is injured or missing during a massive storm, having these documents readily available will be invaluable. For the water and food, it’s recommended that you have at least enough on hand for three days minimum. If your closets are packed with old sports equipment and other junk, you may not be able to find the supplies you need to fully protect yourself. The 7204 contains enough food rations, water and other emergency supplies, such as emergency space blankets, flashlights, water-resistant radio with batteries and emergency ponchos to provide 4 people with the items needed to assist in surviving a natural or man made disaster.
Portable chargers are also good, as those cell phone batteries won’t stay charged on their own indefinitely.
During storm seasons, it’s also a good idea to always try to keep your gas tank topped off.
