Strathmore University was yesterday treated to a surprise security drill conducted by the security forces to test the institution’s preparedness in the event of an emergency, especially a terror attack. The members of staff are trusted to steer the organization and should be informed well in advance before the drill is conducted.
The team conducting the emergency drill should have measures in place to observe the actual turn of events and record what goes on during the drill. Although the emergency drills are important to test the preparedness of a firm, the organisation should not overdo it by conducting them all the time.
A big issue is that many students said that they had never been trained on emergency preparedness before. Enter your email address to subscribe to this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email.
This September is National Preparedness Month, a FEMA initiative encouraging community leaders, business owners and citizens throughout the United States to boost their collective disaster recovery IQ.
FEMA has created a wide range of materials to saturate the nation’s communities and businesses with information to build awareness during National Preparedness Month. There are countless compelling reasons for business leaders to take this opportunity and strengthen their disaster recovery profiles. The executive board can likely tackle the projects of risk assessment and hazard identification fairly easily, but not all companies can rely completely on their own resources and expertise to deliver the goods when it comes to an actionable recovery strategy.
Of course, an alliance with a third-party provider must be approached with as much focus and effort as any internal initiatives, especially in the first stages of the consultation. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is making this month a time for everyone to consider important scenarios we wouldn’t normally like to think about, let alone plan over.  Preparation for natural disasters is important not only at work, but also at home.  Have you taken the time at home to plan and prepare for emergency events like fires, winter storms, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, or wildfires? WINDSHIELD WIPER EQUIPMENT – Repair any problems and maintain proper washer fluid level.
FLOOD - A flood is an abnormal progressive rise in the water level of streams or rivers which may result in overflowing.
New land development can increase flood risk, especially if the construction changes natural runoff paths.
More people die from drowning in fresh water floods during a hurricane or storm, than from any other cause.

In what is seen as a failed security drill, a member of staff succumbed to injuries while scores were injured in the stampede.
They are conducted in institutions and organizations to test the readiness of the people and the strategies put in place in the event of an actual emergency. This will ensure that they give guidelines to the people in the building such as directing them to the emergency exit doors or showing them alternative escape routes. They should be taught how to handle emergency equipment such as handling fire extinguishers and when to turn on the alarm in case of any emergency. If this was done, people would get used to the drills that they would be reluctant to react in the event of an actual emergency. People’s reactions should be used to either improve or implement the emergency preparedness.
Universities and institutions should have mandatory sessions for people to learn about how to stay safe. While planning may take different forms in these each of these contingents, the message remains intact across the board: No one is exempt from the devastating effects of a natural disaster, and everyone must take measures to ensure a safe, smart and speedy plan is in place, if and when such an event does occur. For instance, the organization developed hazard profiles running the gamut from earthquakes, floods and hurricanes to tornados, wildfires and winter storms. Recognizing the dangers of each individual phenomenon and the regions in which they are most likely to occur can help participants better prepare themselves for a crisis situation. Aside from the immediate structural and material damages that must be addressed soon after an event occurs, executives must factor in the long-term costs of missed business opportunities that accumulate every second they take to bring their operations back online. In the spirit of National Preparedness Month, business leaders should consult with seasoned business continuity and disaster recovery solutions providers to help them bring their blueprints to life. Executives must sufficiently convey their planning requirements, describe the most common threats that face their operations and continually evaluate their strategies as their organization changes over time. During the fall, before winter weather sets in, ensure that you stock items such as boots, gloves, warm clothes, blanket, jumper cables, flares, tow rope, a bag of sand or kitty litter, shovel, ice scraper, snow brush, phone charger, and a first aid kit in your vehicle.  It’s also important to make sure you or a mechanic completes a winter weather check on your vehicle. Floods in the Caribbean can often be caused by heavy rainfall, dam or levee failures, tsunamis, storm surges or burst water mains. This unfortunate event caused a rage in the social media where many people condemned the administration for allowing the drill to take place which caught students unawares. Such are conducted at different times and it is advisable that the organizations conduct the drills at least once in about twelve months.

They should be trained on how to report the incidences without panicking and how to offer some aid prior to the arrival of expert services from doctors and security forces. Again, the drills should not be so obvious that people don’t feel obliged to take part in them. A great example of how to create a safety video can be seen in this video by Ohio University. Agility Recovery pointed to research in a recent infographic explaining 40 percent of businesses never reopen their doors following a disaster. By bridging the gap between planning and execution, C-level members and stakeholders can finally achieve the peace of mind they want.
Viewing recovery as an ever-evolving strategic component rather than a quick, Band-Aid fix is often the key that separates effective plans from those that fall short when the going gets tough.
However, some jurisdictions require vehicles to be equipped with chains or snow tires with studs to drive on their roads.
Some people who were part of the team conducting the drill allegedly came dressed like the outlawed Al Shabaab militia giving the students and the staff the impression that they were under attack. Emergencies such as fire or terror attack could occur in a firm and there needs to be a plan to deal with that in the least time possible. The time taken should be reasonable so that it does not appear like an actual attack or emergency. This prompted them to flee for their lives while some jumped from as high as fourth floor of a building. Such drills gauge how people react in the event of emergencies and are later trained on what to do.
Although the school administration have publicly apologized and promised to foot the medical bills of those injured, the Vice Chancellor claims that they were caught unawares despite the fact that training had been done before.
