Newcastle's Children's Emergency Department is open 24 hours, every day of the year in a specially designed and purpose-built area for infants, children and young people who need immediate care for every kind of injury and illness you can think of.
Coming into hospital when you are little - or indeed if you are a parent or carer of a young child - can be daunting at the best of times, so we know how upsetting it can be when there has been an accident or rapid onset of illness.
The department is run by medical staff specially trained in paediatric (children's) healthcare, as well as advanced paediatric nurse practitioners, nursing staff and nursery nurses.
As the service is situated directly next to the Great North Children's Hospital, our staff can ensure rapid and seamless access to all the other paediatric specialists and facilities that are based there. We care for patients from all over the North East, so our staff expect to see over 23,000 young patients every year, from birth all the way up to 16 years of age.
If you are interested in the work of the Children's Emergency Department, please contact us on 0191 282 6111.
If you are unsure about what to do if your child is hurt or becomes unwell, please call the NHS emergency and urgent care service on tel: 111. The Children’s Emergency Department is located next to the main Emergency Department at the RVI which is accessible via Richardson Road.
The HSC Children's Emergency Department is staffed with a healthcare team specifically trained in dealing with children and youth age 16 and under. If you think ita€™s urgent, take your child immediately to the Emergency Department or call 911 for an ambulance. Parents and caregivers must remain with their child at all times in the Childrena€™s Emergency Department. You will wait until your child is called to the Registration Desk, after which you will return to the waiting room. Children coming to Emergency are seen based on how sick they are -- not the order they have arrived. The triage nurse may send your child for tests or samples, such as X-rays, CT scans, urine or blood tests, before your child is seen by a doctor.

Depending on your child's condition, a nurse may give pain medication or a topical medication (through the skin) before your child sees a doctor. You and your child will be asked to take a seat in the waiting room until you are called to see a doctor. If your child starts to feel worse during the wait to see a doctor, talk to the nurse at the Triage Desk.
There are three vending machines inside the Childrena€™s Emergency department, which carry snacks such as granola bars and juice.
The newly expanded Children's Emergency Center provides central South Carolina's most technologically advanced pediatric emergency care and is located in one of only four Level 1 Trauma Centers in the state. Behind each turn in this film are the real stories of children whose lives have been turned upside down by war or natural disaster. Whilst protecting children from violence is life-saving in emergencies, just like water, shelter and medicine, it isn’t prioritised in the same way.

All are highly trained to provide high quality, urgent and emergency care for children. Being seen quickly by these specialists is particularly important for the youngest of patients, especially those under the age of five. This includes operating theatres and a specialist intensive care unit, should they be needed.

If someone is bringing you and your child to Emergency they can use one of the parking spots in the drop-off loop until you and your child are safely inside the department. This allows the doctor to see the results of the scan or test when they meet with your child. Due to control measures to help stop the spread of infection from child to child, Childrena€™s Emergency doesna€™t have books or toys. If possible, try to ease this crowding by leaving your childa€™s siblings and other relatives at home.
You will have to exit the Emergency Department, and enter either the 820 Sherbrook Avenue or 700 William Avenue entrance in order to visit the restaurants and other shops at HSC.
Please sign the petition telling David Cameron to make protection from violence a priority at the summit. After this, they will need to move the vehicle to a public parking area, such as the William Avenue parkade. If your childa€™s condition is considered stable, you will be asked to have a seat in the waiting room.
Please be patient, and take into consideration that another childa€™s life is at risk and needs immediate attention by our care team. He can do this by committing his Government to protecting children from extreme violence, protecting the schools that keep them safe and protecting children who are torn from their families by wars and disasters.
