A vision of pending doom drives Curtis (Michael Shannon) to seek shelter for his family in Take Shelter. This fatalistic prophecy was delivered to a troubled Texas sheriff in No Country for Old Men, the film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2007. A few years and several apocalyptic movies later, a movie called 2012 arrived: A tsunami of special effects enabling a tsunami of natural disasters that plunged the world into chaos. We've endured a Contagion from Steven Soderbergh, in which the world is rapidly depopulated by a seemingly unstoppable airborne virus.
Does our obsession with these monsters relate to our fear of potential contagions, or our feelings about this election year's options? Lars Von Trier's new film Melancholia, which won Kirsten Dunst a Best Actress award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, depicts planet Earth on a collision course with another planet that has flown out of orbit. When the countdown to annihilation comes down to the final seconds, it's clear that the only sane person on earth is the one who is ready to embrace the end.
American director Jeff Nichols tells the story of Curtis LaForche, a man (Michael Shannon, perfectly cast) who sees visions of apocalyptic storms on the Ohio horizon. It's also asking us about how we respond to warnings that, in ages past, would have been worth taking seriously. And even if we do pay attention, and see the frightful signs of the times, how should we respond?
These apocalyptic visions lead to a sort of self-generating apocalypse within Curtis's family and community. Nevertheless, even as the film asks us to challenge Curtis's behavior, Nichols' script wisely refuses to dismiss the possibility that an apocalypse might indeed be coming. The rise of apocalypse movies might be connected to the amount of information we absorb every day, with our nonstop streaming of bad-news headlines.
Almost every day reminds us that we're feeble when we face the power of nature: Just look at how America managed the wrath of Hurricane Katrina. At our worst, we behave as though the problem is in Somebody Else, and so we depict that person as a villain and tell stories about how we can vanquish them.
Near the conclusion of Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, we see the earth being drawn into the furnace of the sun. Malick's film depicts, in what is arguably more astonishing imagery than any of these other films, that what happens in the world of the human heart also happens in the cosmos, and the struggle between light and darkness is graphically displayed on both scales. Snake Plissken is renowned for being one of the most popular anti-heros in cinema history.  The year is 1998 and as a result of huge crime rates, the United States turns the island of Manhattan into a maximum security prison where hardcore criminals are put for life.
I'm Kai's bat shit crazy co-host on the MILFcast and he and Dylan, the hetero-life mates invited me over here at Man, I Love Films to write your Wednesday lists.
The only downside, the image at the top reminds me that there is no sign of a UK release date for The Day yet.
I started replying to this post with a few more suggestions but there were so many I decided to turn it into my own post. The amount of love for this movie makes me sure that I’ll dig it, but it is tough to find almost 3 hours to watch something that could be potentially depressing. Being a writer of Post-Apocalyptic and Apocalyptic fiction I also love movies about the subject.

In the Coen Brothers' celebrated adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel, a rising tide of evil in the world rendered the Western myth of the gunslinging hero useless. And if we haven't seen the world's end out our windows, we're seeing it all the time at the movies. We were assailed by super-monkeys created by our own scientific irresponsibility, in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
As the end gets closer, a lavish wedding celebration is tainted by a bride's despair and irresponsible behavior. Curtis' visions careen from storms of birds straight out of Hitchcock to surreal gravity disruptions and frightful attacks that seem like something out of The Walking Dead or The Shining.
And the film concludes in a place of admirable balance, conveying the urgency of vigilance, the importance of grace-filled cooperation, and the need to resist the power of fear, which can render us that much more vulnerable to the storm a€¦ if the storm comes.
Why shouldn't we feel a growing sense of insufficiency and unpreparedness in the midst of such dire tidings?
Some films are daring enough to suggest that the problem exists within the heart of every human being. Barry, Marco Berrios, David Cade, Cesar De León, Kamar De Los Reyes, Lila Dupree, Gina Holden, Christopher Judge, Kevin Kasha, Peter Katona, Michael J. If you are mad about Action films with some top-quality action then LA Apocalypse is the best film for you.
All the bridges leading into the city are mined, a large wall is built along the shoreline and a large police force army is based there to stop or kill any attempted escapees. This tells a story, another moment in time in a hero’s life that just happened to be captured along with great action, inventive new fight scenes, invigorating battles, and something altogether new and different in the science fiction genre. I love what you have to say about 28 Days, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (so freaking creepy), Children of Men, and (above all) 12 Monkeys. From time to time on this blog I have done reviews of Post Apocalyptic movies on Netflix, because I think it's especially hard to sift through the dreck that Netflix typically provides.
For the first time, the prophesied last days are vividly brought to life in this exciting and dramatic full-length motion picture epic. For the first time, the prophesied last days are vividly brought to life in this exciting and dramatic full-length motion picture epic.Army after army descends into the Valley of Armageddon in central Israel.
Or, more accurately, the wedding celebration is a travesty because everybody is misbehaving, betraying one another, and demonstrating cruelty. And it's become unacceptable (rightly so) to tolerate stereotypes of Middle Eastern characters as terrorists and villains.
Upon a terrorist attack on his plane The President ejects and escapes only to find himself in the middle of the prison.  Ex-soldier Snake Plissken is offered his freedom if he goes in. It also gave us a situation where massive animals can live indefinitely in hibernation, and the male wakes up first, but it’s all the females that are killing us, and there’s only one male, so why are there females around now?
Hope could be found only in dreams, in the notion of a mysterious consolation beyond this doomed dimension.
And you can make a fair argument that, of all of these films, The Tree of Life is the one that's most true to life. He agrees but the complications are many, even though his robust bravado is without question undeniable.  This is a great science fiction action film that shows where man kinds violence will eventually lead them.
It's a media event unlike any other in history, and the entire world is glued to their television sets.

A typical Western male, he rejects the offers of help from his large-hearted wife (Jessica Chastain), spends money his family set aside for their daughter's medical treatment, and determines to prepare for the world's end with his own strength and resources.
When he starts shouting like a crazy person at the neighbors, is that the only sane thing for a culture that isn't listening? Its set in Spain and basically the whole world comes down with a strange sickness that gives you intense agoraphobia (fear to go outside), but the fear is so intense that it causes seizures, brain hemorrhage and death.
At that very moment, a great charismatic leader arises and performs a miracle of astounding dimensions. The whole world seems to be convinced he is.Only Bronson Pearl (Richard Nester) and Helen Hannah (Leigh Lewis), co-anchors of the World News Network are in a position to uncover the truth. The movie is really well done for the budget and other than one scene (that involves a bear) I think it was really believable. But as Helen discovers the identity of this great leader she is torn between her deep love for Bronson and her new found understanding about Christ and the antichrist.
With global police forces in hot pursuit, this is but one chance to warn the world as it rushes headlong into the Apocalypse!Apocalypse is a story of love, faith and spiritual redemption set against the backdrop of a world in chaos. Shot on six continents and featuring incredible action sequences combined with heart-stopping drama, Apocalypse is a movie that will prove to be the cincematic event of the year. The movies soundtrack is anchored by an original title track written and performed by Ray Blotz. Other musical artists involved with the sound track include Twila Paris, Charlie Daniels, Stephen Curtis Chapman, CeCe Winnans, Avalon, Phillips Craig and Dean, Geoff Moore and the Distance, and Don Francisco.Based on the original screen play by Peter and Paul Lalonde and produced in cooperation with Dr.
Jack and Rexella Van Impe, the film features cameo appearances by the Van Impes, evangelist Luis Palau and radio personality Marlin Maddoux.
The movie is called "The Colony" and is about a world in which the whether has gone into "Ice Age" mode. A group of survivors is living in an underground bunker that was set-up to sustain long term life. They lose contact with another similar settlement and a small group must go find out what happened to the other colony. Once they get there they find that the other colony has been eaten by "Feral People." In fact the actor who plays "The Feral Leader" Dru Viergever was interviewed on the podcast that I co-host. Soon though it turns into a cliche zombie type film.On a scale of one to five stars I would rate "The Colony" a solid 3 stars. Again the world is in the middle of another "Ice Age" except this time the only survivors are on a train that circumnavigates the globe. The train is divided into sections with the low class passengers in the rear and the upper echelon passengers in the front. It's a futuristic re-telling of the French Revolution in which the poor passengers revolt against the rich only they have to advance along the train car by car.
This is where the fun begins, each car is a new set of obstacles.I really liked this movie, especially because I wasn't expecting much. It had great direction and camera work and it also had some really high quality acting by Tilda Swinton, John Hurt and Ed Harris.
