Rocket stoves are a rather unique invention which uses kindling-sized sticks as fuel, burning them very hot and very efficiently — all without using electricity. This creates a hotter fire than you can usually get out of kindling, as well as providing sufficient heat to cook with from very little fuel. While I suppose it would be possible to use a rocket stove for heating, that’s really not what they are designed for.
Regardless of how a rocket stove is actually built, they are all essentially the same thing.
Fuel magazine – To hold fuel that is going to be burned and provide a means of feeding it into the combustion chamber. Heat exchanger – This is whatever is used to transfer the heat to the food being cooked, such as a pot sitting on top of the chimney.
With the efficient combustion rate of the rocket stove, it doesn’t need large pieces of fuel or use as much fuel as other stoves do. A heat exchanger can be mounted to the top of the rocket stove for heating water or for using it as a heater, rather than putting a pot on top of it.
As already mentioned, the basic rocket stove design is a 90 degree elbow, with a shorter horizontal leg and a longer vertical one.
Place the base block on a bare patch of ground and stack the other two partial blocks on top of it, so that the openings in them form the chimney. Actually using rocket stove technology as the foundation for a home heating system isn’t all that unusual.
Next time, I’ll go with cinder blocks although the weight factor would be a negative as we are looking at mobility as a primary need. SueJean, what books and videos would you recommend that contain the “how-to” information you mentioned? Another pair of names are Ianto Evans and Leslie Jackson and I have their book which is available on Amazon. I also have The Cob Builder’s Handbook since the bio-mass for a rocket stove heater is based primarily on cob and I knew almost nothing about cob when I started this project. There’s another couple in Oregon that have some building plans available and they hold workshops around the country for people interested in learning how to build their own rocket stove mass heater.
There are lots of free videos available on u-tube also that show various designs and step-by-step projects that people have done or are doing.
We were in the process of gathering all of our components to build when we simply ran out of time so our projects have been pushed back to spring. One of the primary motivating factors for us is that a rocket stove works fine with substandard wood and we have plenty of that. If you wanted to control the burn speed, you probably could position something flat over the intake to throttle back the airflow. Haven’t messed around with Rocket Stoves but, shouldn’t the bottom base block be used to lengthen the chimney? Didn’t realize special blocks came as shown for the combustion chamber till I played the video.

I’d be mighty careful about cooking outdoors during any kind of emergency conditions. Starting a fire wouldn’t be a problem as you can bring waxed paper which is a great fire starter. Whether you’re building a ground up home for you and your children or just adding a Bali hut to the poolside, you’ll find friends here. The rocket stove produces a lot of heat at the cooking “burner”; it doesn’t really radiate heat like a fireplace or wood burning stove would. The fuel in the combustion chamber has a more abundant supply of oxygen than it would in a stove with a stagnant air supply.
Smaller diameter pieces of wood, which we would normally consider kindling, work exceptionally well for a rocket stove.
Water from an adjacent vessel can be circulated through the heat exchanger by convection, with the heated water being cycled back to the vessel to be replaced by cool water to be heated. While not a requirement, it is a good idea to use some insulating material around the entire rocket stove to protect users from being burned.
While I have 4 commercial rocket stoves, when I tried this, my cement blocks immediately cracked and started to disintegrate from the heat. Maybe once or twice for a short, llow-heat cooking but they will disintegrate under high heat.
And when they need clean water, elite soldiers are choosing the Paratroopers Water Purifier -- the smallest, lightest, and most durable water purifier on earth! They are great for cooking on because you only need to gather some twigs to get things hot and don’t burn your hands as easy as cooking on an open fire.
And with the small branches and twigs available outdoors, you can keep it burning for as long as you want. You’ll also find ‘mate’s rates’ materials, national directories of trades and services and even our ‘Sunday Markets’ where you can buy, swap and sell! This means that they aren’t an efficient heater, even though they are an efficient cooking stove.
Larry Winiarski described the principles in 1982, but in reality the rocket stove is based upon much older designs. The chimney also provides a means for the heat that the stove produces to reach the food to be cooked. If a pot is put on the top of the chimney which totally covers it, airflow might be blocked. This creates low pressure in the combustion chamber, causing more air to be drawn in through the fuel magazine; providing a constant source of fresh, oxygenated air to the stove. This increases the temperature of the burn, in much the same way that adding extra oxygen to a blowtorch increases the temperature of the burning gas. This adds to the burn efficiency, by providing a larger surface area for the mass of wood being used. Successful rocket stoves have been made of steel pipe (stove pipe), clay, cinder blocks and a variety of other materials.
The insulation will help contain the heat as well, ensuring that the most possible heat reaches the top of the chimney for cooking.
The bottom block, which is going to be the combustion chamber and fuel magazine needs to have the web between the two holes broken out. It’s so small and lightweight you can easily carry it in your pocket or purse, backpack or glove box.

Next time you head off for a camping trip, why not make your own portable tin can rocket stove?
The Mexican people, for example, have a stove which they call a “chimnea” which is very similar to a rocket stove, although it does not have a fuel magazine. Although not as likely, the same thing can happen if too much fuel is placed in the rocket stove. More than anything, it is the chimney which causes the draft which controls the airflow through the rocket stove.
Any hydrocarbons which don’t burn in the combustion chamber are carried up the chimney and burn in the chimney, making for very efficient fuel consumption. Between you and your four neighbors, chances are that at least one of the five households will experience a break-in… or worse, a home invasion.
Oh and there’s a bunch of missionaries that perfected them for cooking in third world countries.
Interestingly enough, the Spanish word “chimnea” means “chimney.” Nevertheless, even without this magazine, the chimnea works essentially the same as a rocket stove. The other two cinder blocks are used for the chimney and need to be broken so that they make an eight inch square. The mesh he adds looks like a great little addition but if you can’t afford the extra $4, just buy the cement bricks for $6! In other words, the central web becomes one side of the square and everything past it gets broken off. Thieves oil, valor – which you can look up on the website and make from sprains and arthritis. Biofilm is a huge new supplements for breaking down the biofilm around bacteria and has helped tremendously with getting where the blood doesn’t take the medicine. Ask anyone whose home has ever been robbed what if feels like, and they’ll say it feels like they were violated.
Because not only do criminals violate what should be your sanctuary from the world and walk away. I fitted the adapter to a Snowpeak Gigapower stove I have and a green Coleman propane tank. In cold weather, especially when snow melting is involved, there isn’t a way to accurately predict how much fuel is required even if you use white gas.
In any event, I always bring more than I need, if only because I like the added safety margin.
Reply Philip Werner August 21, 2013 at 10:23 pm # The cold weather proofness of white gas is not in question. Reply Milton August 22, 2013 at 12:08 am # Propane would be the perfect solution for canister stoves.
Sure they would be expensive but the strength of Titanium may be able to offset the weight of a steel canister.
