Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a rapid and effective sterilant against bacteria, yeasts, molds, and viruses. ProKure's patented Drop-and-Go System delivers chlorine dioxide in a safe, fast and economical way for customers seeking solutions for disinfection and deodorization. You have to know what the current reading is, by testing and recording your readings for chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and cyanuric acid.
Then you have to decide if you need to make an adjustment to a more ideal range, and if so, you have to know how much chemical to add to achieve the desired increase or decrease. Finally, you have to know how many gallons is in your pool, so that you can add the correct amount of pool chemical.
Today's post has all of the information you need to make precise chemical level adjustments to any swimming pool. Chlorine and bromine fluctuate the most, followed by pH and alkalinity - test these at least weekly.
As above, most of the time it’s not the chlorine that’s irritating your skin – it’s the chloramines and the pH of the water. Skin irritation from swimming is usually caused by bacteria in the water: most commonly the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa that manifests itself as a red, bumpy rash. The green hair thing is caused by letting copper infused water dry naturally on your hair and then, once you hair has dried, shampooing it.
The way to avoid green hair is (a) to check the label on your chlorine to ensure it doesn’t contain copper, (b) to rinse your hair in fresh water after you swim, or (c) to wash your hair with a swimmer’s shampoo that has a lower pH. In order to figure out the best treatment method for lowering the chlorine level of your pool you need to determine the scale of the problem. If the chlorine level is significantly higher – say, you recently shocked the pool but forgot about the pool party you’d arranged – your pool’s going to need an intervention.
So, depending on the severity of the over-chlorination problem, and the amount of time you’ve got before you need to use the pool, here are your options. If it’s a bright, sunny day and you’ve got a couple of hours to spare before you need to use the pool, just take the pool cover off.
Again, as above, don’t add chlorine to the water while you’re waiting for the natural sunlight to do its thing.  Do monitor the water regularly, though, and resume normal chlorination when the readings drop to 2ppm.
This is the quick fix, especially if you’ve really overdone the chlorine and you’re in a hurry. Hydrogen Peroxide also works – although not the domestic hydrogen peroxide sold in first aid kits. Also, if you artificially reduce the chlorine, the level of stabiliser (cyanuric acid) will remain the same as it was before.
If you have a sand or DE filter, the quickest way to get rid of over-chlorinated pool water is to backwash. Or you could actually read the whole article before interjecting a solution that was previously covered by the author.
What if your apartment complex keeps failing the test and doesn’t notify the tenants ?
I think it is important to note that the appropriate free chlorine level should be based on the level of cyanuric acid.

The Texas health code provides for the chlorine in commercial swimming pools to be between 1-8ppm. If you are able to check your water on a daily basis then you can go with a lower chlorine – perhaps as low as 1-2ppm.
We are now able to run the pools on our weekly swimming pool service at a slightly lower chlorine level with the help of a mineral pack.
If you are running a commercial pool remember to ensure the staff is checking the chlorine on a daily basis. Blue Science is a Texas pool service provider specializing in weekly pool cleanings based off our own tried and tested 23 Point Pool Maintenance Program. Blue Science provides weekly pool cleaning services, pool repairs and pool equipment upgrades to Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio Texas homeowners. While providing pool service, pool repair, remodeling and new pool equipment we use pool supplies, parts and pool products from some of the top pool companies. The Metchlor Pool Chlorinator is a cost effective in-ground and above ground pool chlorinator.
It has been recognized for more than 100 years for its disinfecting properties and has been approved by the U.S. It is employed in the health care industries to decontaminate rooms, pass-throughs, isolators and also as a sterilant for product and component sterilization. Calcium hardness levels, cyanuric acid levels and salt levels all change slowly, and can be tested monthly. Pentair has a nice pool volume calculator on their website, if you'd rather not do the math.
Exposure to over-chlorination can provoke asthma, lung irritation, and potentially skin and eye irritation.  As well as being potentially bad for you, it’s bad for your pool. What it does with them is to produce ammonia based compounds of chlorine called chloramines. However, in 9 times out of 10, what’s stinging and causing you red eye actually isn’t chlorine; it’s the chloramines. Since most shampoos have a pH of 9 or more, the shampoo oxidises the copper residue in your hair and turns it – yup – green. If the chlorine level is only slightly high – say, 4ppm or so – and presuming you’re not planning on using the pool for an hour or two, then the easiest answer is usually masterful inactivity.
The ultra violet in natural sunlight destroys chlorine, and the direct sunshine of a cloudless day is quite capable of depleting 90% or more of a pool’s chlorine level in just 2-3 hours. As with most quick fixes, though, there are caveats and downsides – but we’ll come to those in a minute. So make sure you test the pH before and after adding the chemicals, and adjust accordingly.
The net effect is that, if you later add chlorine via a tricholor tablet, the stabiliser level of your pool is going to rise. Of course, refilling the pool with fresh water to dilute the existing chlorine takes a bit longer. Plus, the addition of fresh water is going to throw your pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness seriously out of whack: so make sure you test and adjust once you’ve finished topping up the pool.

We used to manage towards 4ppm (parts per million) as a maintenance level on most pools that we were servicing on a weekly basis. It is helpful to have a maintenance report on site showing the chemical levels and what was added each day to move them. If you own a pool in Texas we can provide everything your pool needs on a regular ongoing basis for a low monthly cost. Environmental Protection Agency for many applications, including the treatment of drinking water.Chlorine dioxide is globally used as an antimicrobial and as an oxidizing agent in drinking water, poultry process water, swimming pools, and mouthwash preparations. You’ve put too much chlorine in your pool.  But is too much chlorine in your pool dangerous? To be fair, some chlorine manufacturers include copper in their product; but copper pipes or a copper heater can also introduce the element into the water.
These chemicals are usually come in large bags and are a lot cheaper than commercially packaged “chlorine neutralisers” sold in bottles.
Typically, 60 grams will reduce the chlorine by 1ppm in an average backyard pool of 32 m2, or approximately 41,000 litres of water).
If you artificially neutralise the chlorine it’s incredibly difficult to get it back up again. I can’t remember at the moment if this is required by health code at all pools, but I know certain cities we provide pool service for including (pool service in Frisco, TX) and (pool service in Plano, TX) are enforcing or asking about the daily record keeping at least. For pool owners in other states, follow us on Facebook or Twitter for updates to our pool care blog.
It is used to sanitize fruit and vegetables as well as equipment for food and beverage processing.Chlorine dioxide is also one of the most effective killers of deadly pathogens.
Chlorine dioxide does not chlorinate organic material, resulting in significant decreases in trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs) and other chlorinated organic compounds. The residual chlorine that hasn’t yet oxidised organic matter is called free chlorine – and that doesn’t smell at all. As long as you’re not adding more chlorine to the water, by the time a couple of swimmers have jumped in and added the de-chlorinating effect of their smelly feet, armpits, and backsides to the accumulating dirt, debris, and bugs that constantly hit the pool, the problem will  solve itself.
So only add around half of what you think you need, and then test the water before adding more.
Below that, chlorine rapidly degrades, and at anything above 100ppm, the stabiliser actually prevents the chlorine from sanitising the water. Water change drivers can include: bather load, debris such as leaves, dust sand and pollen, and exposure to water run-off to name a few. As a rule we just provide a daily maintenance report to all our commercial pool customers for their maintenance staff to utilize even if we are not there every day. Chlorine dioxide is a highly effective eradicator of pathogenic organisms such as Ebola, Legionella, MRSA, H1N1, E. If the pH balance of the water is too far outside of this range it’s going to irritate your eyes.
