In the UK today there are still a high number of buildings that show fire exit signs that use the phrase a€?Emergency exita€™. When the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations first came out in 1996 it specifically stated that the all fire exit signs must show a a€?fast walkinga€? man. The Regulations did not specifically state supplementary text of any kind needed to be shown on either sign.
The British Standards, through BS5499 part 4, took these Regulations and originally stated that best practice was to show supplementary text next to the running man pictogram and arrow (as shown above). As the title of this article suggests, the Standard did not and still does not acknowledge the phrase a€?Emergency exita€™. For advocates of the a€?Emergency exita€™ sign, the counter argument put forward is that, with the exception of fire drills, all building evacuations are a€?emergencya€™ related but not all of them are a€?firea€™ related e.g bomb threats, gas leaks etc. As has been investigated in a previous article, the definition and difference between an exit and fire exit has long been explored.
However, as this article reviews, the sign that is certainly not an option for any installer is the a€?Emergency exita€™ sign.
Plastic and Aluminum are supplied with 4 pre-drilled mounting holes, Vinyl labels do not have holes.
Aluminum is one of the most durable material options offered, with excellent resistance to harsh weather conditions. Polyethylene is a rust free, chip and crack resistant plastic (in white or yellow) treated for digital and screen printing. Polyethylene signs are an economical alternative to aluminum signs, without significant compromise on durability.

As you may expect, this is usually to denote the door that is to be used in the event of an emergency. However, in the first version of this Standard this supplementary text was an optional extra. Signs leading to the front door and any other door used in normal day-to-day working practice should use a€?Exita€™ signs.
However, in practice, anecdotal research suggests that installers use this sign to denote a secondary door that may be used in the event of an emergency. If the item comes direct from a manufacturer, it may be delivered in non-retail packaging, such as a plain or unprinted box or plastic bag.

Import charges previously quoted are subject to change if you increase your maximum bid amount. Signs leading to and denoting the door that is only used in the event of an emergency (usually with a push bar or push pad on them) should be marked as a€?Fire exita€™. In other words, the evacueea€™s first choice is the doorway or corridor marked a€?Fire exita€™. If you reside in an EU member state besides UK, import VAT on this purchase is not recoverable. Import charges previously quoted are subject to change if you increase you maximum bid amount. However, the least common of these and slight anomaly is the a€?Exit for emergency use onlya€™ sign. However, if for some reason that exit is blocked, then some installers like the idea of having a secondary means of escape signed should the evacuee require it.
