The ministry of education accused them of links to Fethullah Gulen, a US-based cleric the Turkish government says was behind Friday’s uprising. Brian Mello, a Muhlenberg College political science professor and expert on Turkish affairs, weighs in on Gullen, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the state of affairs in Turkey.
Earnest said the Turkish government had filed materials in electronic form with the US government, which the Justice Department and State Department were reviewing.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced early Thursday that the government has chose to declare a state of emergency for three months pending parliamentary approval after the failed coup to overthrow the government and install a junta run by former cleric Fethullah Gulen and his band of murderers.

Late on Friday, the Turkish authorities said that an attempted coup was taking place in the country. Around 1,400 people were wounded as soldiers commandeered tanks, attack helicopters and warplanes in their bid to seize power, strafing parliament and the intelligence headquarters and trying to seize the main airport and bridges in Istanbul. More than 1500 university deans have also been ordered to resign and the licences of 21,000 teachers working at private institutions revoked. The worldwide community, including NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, has made clear that it stands behind Turkey’s elected government. Turkey has been a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation since 1952 and one of America’s most important allies in the region, especially during the Cold War. Erdogan told CNN in an interview on Monday that he could have been killed if he’d stayed another 10 to 15 minutes at the hotel where he was vacationing with his family in Marmaris, on the Mediterranean coast. In testimony published by the Hurriyet newspaper and corroborated by a Turkish official, an infantry lieutenant-colonel said the coup plotters had tried to persuade military chief Hulusi Akar, who was being held hostage, to join the effort to overthrow Erdogan but that he had refused.

Some European leaders and human rights groups have criticised the government’s subsequent purge of state institutions, as well as calls by many Turks to reinstitute the death penalty to punish those involved in the coup. Turkey’s opposition parties have united against the coup attempt, condemning it in the harshest terms and underscoring their determination to preserve democracy and the rule of law in Turkey.
