Preparing for disasters can mean the difference between life and death, but putting together plans and kits can be overwhelming. Most relief agencies recommend people put together a 72 hour emergency kit – enough food, water, and medical supplies to keep each person in a household supplied for three days. This 2 page list from PG Ward includes visuals on what you should include in your 72 hour kit as well as lists for additional things you should include in a car kit, a child kit, and a pet kit. While not exactly a printable, Top Spec US has put together a nice, simple graphic showing what to pack in a bug out bag. A 4-person, 72-hour survival kit packaged in a durable nylon backpack and designed for the car. With our money-back guarantee, you can rest assured that you have purchased the most reliable survival kit on the market. If you’re like most pet parents, the health and safety of your furry, scaly or feathered family members is a priority to you. Living in Brevard, there is always a chance that at some time between the months of June and November your home may be under a mandatory evacuation order when a storm strikes.  Do you know what you would do to keep your pets safe if you were ordered to leave? In addition to knowing where your pets will go in an emergency, you should also pack a pet survival kit along with your family’s disaster kit. All it takes to keep your entire family safe and healthy during and after the storm is a little bit of planning.

Luckily we had our water storage to save the day, with plenty of drinking and flushing water available.  If this had been an “actual emergency” we might not have been able to refill the toilet tanks and had a go in them. Your short term solution could be a single-bucket camping toilet (like this one from Amazon), but those fill up fast.
In a previous Emergency Sanitation post we suggested that you might want to turn your home toilet into a port-a-potty. Your poo contains most of the pathogens and needs to be treated or contained until you can dispose of it properly. After using the poo bucket sprinkle as much carbon material as needed to completely cover the surface of the poo. If you are in a severe emergency and the sewer pipes are destroyed, (see Earthquakes and Sewers) you will need a way to dispose of these things safely. You can learn about composting methods for humanure and preparing a “wheelie bin” or other composter in this handout RELIEVE – emergency compost toilet booklet.
Awesome website, congratulations Shelle and thank you so much for your wonderful ideas and for sharing them. This kit is similar to our adult emergency kit, but adjusted for the smaller size and weight of a child.
Packed into our sturdiest bag with room from shoes, medication, and other individual households need, nothing else comes close to the readiness of the 4 Person Kit. This survival kit contains the most critical emergency preparedness supplies including the emergency food, water, lighting, radio, first-aid, sanitation, and shelter supplies to prepare for any disaster. If you find a kit of equal or greater value advertised for less, we will refund you the difference. Of course, the key to keeping your pets healthy and safe is being prepared… especially during hurricane season. Items like crates and carriers, food, bedding, toys and enough medication (if your pet’s on a prescription) to last at least two weeks should be included in this kit. If you have taken time this month to survey the hazards for your area you will know that disruption of our sewage systems is a very real possibility. The Pacific NW is overdue for that big earthquake, you know, and experts are saying that our water and sewer pipes will be toast afterward. This twin-bucket system is another alternative – one that makes disposal of your waste easier and more sanitary. The great thing about poo is that it doesn’t take up much space, you only create about 4 to 10 ounces per person daily.

This system is modeled after composting toilets used in Christchurch New Zealand after their 2011 earthquake. Because the main purpose for learning this method is to keep your family safe and healthy and away from pathogens. I am encouraging you to know the basics of emergency sanitation and have supplies ready so you can create an emergency toilet. No turning on the faucet (they tried repeatedly, muscle memory you know) No water from the refrigerator door, no showers and no toilet flushing! You can store your pee in buckets with lids until it can be sprinkled on land as a fertilizer or added to your compost pile. When Susan isn’t promoting the shelter’s Facebook page or designing ads for adoption promotions, she enjoys spending time with her own dogs at the park or at the beach. They are only open to people in the mandatory evacuation areas and you must have current county tags and proof of vaccinations for each pet to be allowed in. Some hotels will allow pets, but it is important that you confirm the pet policy in advance as part of your preparation planning.
If you live in an apartment and don’t have access to land you may have to save it until the authorities give instructions about the disposal.
You can also check with your veterinarian’s office and boarding facilities to see if they offer boarding services during mandatory evacuations (like Young’s Animal Hospital in Titusville offers for established clients).
