Notice the lee board is mounted to the front in this configuration and I am using slightly more buoyant amas. Anyway I quite fancy trying out this idea again but with a better balanced lee board arrangement, so I took the spinnaker to my local sail maker to make some modifications and in a couple of weeks I'll give it another go!
To start with I shall just hold the mast wedged into one of the foot well recesses with one hand. The setup would obviously only be a light wind option but I quite fancy the idea of ghosting along with a lovely spinnaker flying.
I can comfortably sail into wind with this setup, the limitation being the small size of the amas as they bury fairly easily. Tip - For my masts and booms I use aluminium paint pole extensions bought from my local DIY supplier. Here is one of my favourite kayak sailing configurations using a 17 square foot mizzen made from part of an old windsurf sail and a Pacific Action sail up front. By not using any outriggers I can easily take down both sails on the water and I am back to a standard sea worthy Scupper Pro. I  made a plywood plate shaped to the tank well and riveted it to the kayak using 90 degree brackets. I wanted to create a futuristic boat – a sailboat with endless potential for speed and fun.
The length overall is 4,90 meter for the main hull, mast length is 4,00 meters, hull width is 0.56 meters and with extended outriggers it extends to 2,90 meters.
The boat also enjoys the advantage of being very stable for sailing because of the foils that are integrated into the outriggers.
It also features an ergonomic cockpit with a comfortable seat so the boat can be handled in a relaxed and easy way.
There is a roomy, dry storage area in the main hull that can accommodate a picnic bag or gear for a long outdoor trip. I had missed in the german site, that the paddling configuration is a completely different stance. Being a happy owner to the Segelkajak P 4,9 I hereby can certify that this really is a funny boat to own and to sail.

Also, try to put your weight slightly forward or put 3-5 litres of water in plastic bottles on front of the boat. For some time, I’ve been exploring ways to ease or reduce paddling in reaching some of my farther off fishing sites. I’ve also taken a few umbrellas out with me exploring whether any might ease my journeys and save me a bit of paddling, but most were not practical, did not stay securely in place or allow me to paddle and steer when deployed.
While looking at umbrellas online a few weeks ago, I stumbled across one from Radio Flyer that looked interesting. The umbrella is 31 inches high and 26 inches in diameter when extended which is large enough to catch the wind yet small enough to not totally obliterate my view going forward. The clamp can easily be slid or moved to any portion of the cockpit lip, but works best for me when positioned directly in front.
While the umbrella is an option only when the wind is blowing roughly in the direction you want to go, if you’re like me, and plan your trips to take advantage of the tide and wind, it can provide a nice boost. I won’t be setting any speed records with my umbrella and won’t be challenging Yoav to a race in his souped up W, but I think the Radio Flyer may just make a few of my longer paddles a little more relaxing. An outrigger is defined as a framework supporting a float extended outboard from the side of a boat for increasing stability. The first reason is because the kayak’s operator is often busy fishing, which means they cannot pay much attention to balancing their kayak as they scout for fish, operate their fishing gear, and handle a fish they just caught. The second reason is that people who paddle sit-in, SOT or hybrid kayaks do it while being seated in the L position, with their legs stretched in front of them in a way that prevents them from being effective for balancing. The third reason is that people who pedal a kayak find it even harder to balance it, as their legs activate the pedal drive from the kayak’s center line, with their feet l moving high over the deck. The fifth reason is that some people have balancing problems resulting from a deficient sense of balance, a neurological condition such as multiple sclerosis (MS), artificial knees or hips, or simply because of old age or just because they’re big and tall.
The sixth reason why people look to outfit their fishing kayak with outriggers is because when they outfit it with a powerful motor the higher speed increases the chance of accidents, which calls for improved stability.
Small outriggers offer some initial (primary) stability, so they can have a psychological effect of diminishing the paddler’s fears and boosting their confidence.


Folding outriggers that are integrated into the rear end of the kayak’s hull and deployed outward by means of a lever have the same effect as small outriggers. Light rigs – Outriggers built from thin, small-diameter aluminum tubes might bend or snap when exposed to strong pressure. Outriggers made from thin steel rods can bend, and outriggers made from thin wooden beams can break.
Outriggers poorly attached to the kayak could get torn out of their place in case of an accident.
But this is not the end of the drag story, since the outriggers also generate their own wakes, which interact with the wake generated by the kayak’s main hull in a manner that increases turbulence and works to further increase drag. A pair of outriggers can weigh over 20 lbs, which transforms even a kayak of reasonable weight into a barge in terms of transportation and carrying it to the beach and from it back you one’s vehicle. Ideally, you’d want your kayak outriggers to be as long as possible, so they generate as little drag as possible when the kayak moves in the water. You also want the outriggers to be as big as possible so they have more buoyancy, and thus work better to provide the required additional lateral stability. We recommend outriggers for a W kayak being sailed, and by this we mean real sailing with a large size, powerful upwind rig (i.e. Otherwise, people who suffer from a severe balance deficiency that prevents them from sensing the kayak or reacting effectively (e.g. Outriggers are impractical for paddling a W kayak in tandem, because the presence of the outrigger near the stern would restrict the motion of the rear paddler’s paddle. Tasmania is still at the mercy of the westerlies, but sea canoeists have learned to respect and make good use of these winds. This information on sails has been collated from a number of members of the Maatsuyker Canoe Club who regularly make extended trips in windy conditions. Again the lee board is mounted to the left so if I ground out the securing nut loosens. It was an old symmetrical spinnaker from a 420 that I cut down into a sort of asymmetric shape. Of course although it is a large sail area the advantage of a spinnaker is the speed in which it can be taken down when the wind picks up! Going off the wind in anything over a force 3 is fantastic fun and provides some exhilarating sailing.
Using outriggers is fine but when things get a little wild on the water I am happier without them! The two pictures here show how I have adapted the aft tank well so I can fit a lee board and mizzen sail.
I have used this setup for a few years now and it has never shown signs of stress even when using a 26 square foot mizzen! They are fairly easy to pick up if you keep your ear to the ground, for example many sailing clubs have a pile of unwanted old windsurf boards. This helps sailors pass hindrances just under the surface of the water and you also can drive on the beach with speed.
The wheels can be integrated into the main hull so it’s possible to transport the boat fully assembled from the parking area to the water. Any comments form other readers or designers on installing a pedal- propulsion on a small tri ? These tend to be under great tension (and the hull is under great strain too), but perhaps scaled to this size the tensions are not so bad — the bipod mast is an interestingly simple solution, since otherwise the mast would need its own wire bracing? I’ve researched motorizing my Wavewalk with both gas and electric models but, in the end, don’t want to add even a minimum of 30-40 pounds of weight, or put up with the added hassle of keeping gas, charging batteries, related maintenance, and anything other than a totally quiet experience on the water. Not that I’m lazy, mind you; I still enjoy getting my exercise, but at age 72, I could use a bit of relief on my 8-10 mile paddles. It has a bendable, tilt handle which can be rotated 360 degrees, and stays in place when set. When not being deployed, the umbrella, still attached to the cockpit rim, folds down and totally out of the way for fishing.


In kayaks, outriggers usually come in a pair mounted at the rear, so as to interfere as little as possible with the kayaker’s paddling and fishing activities.
In this awkward position the legs are prevented from contributing even the little help in balancing that they could have contributed in a paddling mode. But when push comes to shove, that is in case of an accident or even a common case of lost balance, small outriggers offer too little secondary stability to prevent the kayak from seriously tilting, which is enough to dump its passengers overboard. Such kayak offers little stability when its folding outriggers are not deployed outward, and when its outriggers are in the open position the overall stability it offers is comparable to the overall stability offered by a regular wide SOT kayak with no outriggers. This is especially true if the floats are big and located at a big distance from the kayak itself. This means that as the kayak moves, the outriggers move at speeds that are many times higher than their own hull speed (Froude number). This additional unwanted effect is especially strong in outriggers that are mounted close to the kayak’s hull. Such size already makes it impossible for many anglers to car top their kayak, and forces them to transport it on a trailer, which clearly defies the purpose of kayak fishing in yet another way. Historically this resulted in many sailing ships being wary of approaching the rugged west coast of Tasmania. The 800 ton Cataraqui, sailing from Liverpool to Melbourne with 369 emigrants, foundered on the rocky west coast of King Island. The ideas and designs may make a good starting point for others interested in developing sails for their own conditions and capabilities.
When I tested it off Teignmouth in South Devon I didn't have any lee board towards the front of the boat and quite understandably all my kayak wanted to do was steer down wind.
As I have said before, this is no Hobie AI beater but it is a cheap way to experience something similar.
This is my favourite configuration for multi day trips or when the conditions are a little unpredictable. Old well used sails are the best as they are not so stiff and roll up easier if you need to take down the sail on the water. I loved to win a regatta and I always thought about optimizing the speed and the sailing performance. I think it would be very useful in inland waters where internal combustion motors are banned and where the weight of batteries for electric motors would be impractical. Certainly the clean flow over the the leading edge of the sail, besides its lift when off the wind, are welcome attributes. In my opinion this boat is a primarly a light wind vessel as it is very sensitive to hard gusts and as the floaters quite easily dig deep into the water. The powerful clamp (you need to use both hands to open it) attaches securely to the W’s cockpit rim via a groove that is intended to attach to the lip of a wagon, but looks made for the W. When positioned on the side of the W and pointed downward so that a small portion of the umbrella touches the water, it might even serve somewhat as a makeshift sea anchor or outrigger (however, I’ll have to experiment more to determine related usefulness). This generates a disproportionally big amount of Residual resistance (Rr) as well as extra Frictional resistance (Fr), and the kayaker feels their combined effect as extra drag on the kayak, which makes it slower and much harder to paddle.

The positioning of the sails allows me to have a full paddle stroke even when both sails are set. These features allow for a secure, hands-free operation, allowing me to paddle and steer at the same time that the umbrella propels me forward. The main disadvantage that have occurred to me is the difficulties to turn the boat when tacking (like most multi hull boats). To complete the turn you very often have to use either the rudder or a paddle (that you always should keep with you in this boat). One should also take in consideration that the ride with this boat might be quite wet even if the sea is not too choppy.
