I deal mostly with music (mostly noisy music to be exact), musical equipment and electronics as it relates to musical equipment. I found some very helpful instructions through Dave Benson’s DX7 Page (also archived here) for replacing the battery. I was ready to give up and assume it was a deeper motherboard issue until I read this again and decided I would take a look at the underside of my DX7′s motherboard and compare it to yours. I remember that that area around the battery definitely showed signs that people in the past had been poking around there.
Another possibility is to remove the battery and replace it with a PCB CR2032 holder from Maplins or maybe Farnell and then you can use an ordinary CR2032.
In desperation you could try any tagged CR2032 (Google CR2032 solder) and connect with flying leads, insulate and shove in a space in the synth. Like with Mike above, I am getting the same problem when powered up the LED numerals scramble and the lcd is solid boxes on the top half.
Just been reading the other comments to see whether I have a dead battery problem with my DX7 11D. I’ve been using my DX7 normally until now and sudenly, when I turn it on my LCD screen comes on with the typical “Yamaha DX7 Synthesizer” as it should, but nothing else happens.

I have a DX7, and just like SinMASS, the screen comes on with “Yamaha DX7 Synthesizer” as it should, but nothing else happens. After some trobleshooting (opening up the DX7, removing and inspecting all the circuit boards looking for cracks, checking for +5, +15, -15 voltages at the ICs), turning off the power and removing the CR2032 memory battery and waiting to reset everything back to its default state with no results, I then thought to check for clock frequencies using an oscilloscope. The Value of Yamaha DX7 as a Real InstrumentElectric keyboards were introduced about half-a-century ago as equivalents to their guitar and bass siblings, which had undergone a similar electrification.
When the Yamaha DX7, the first digital FM synthesizer hit the market in 1983, some musicians in the pop scene went as far as saying that acoustic instrumentalists would go unemployed and the craft of playing violin, trumpet, saxophone etc. Conclusion: The DX7 is not for every application, and it could never substitute any other instrument, or even other synthesizers, and vice versa. Non vorrei essere ripetitivo, se aprite una macchina scollegate sempre la macchina dalla rete elettrica, non rischiate inutilmente!! Import charges previously quoted are subject to change if you increase you maximum bid amount. The manual for the DX7 states that the battery should last for 3 to 5 years and it was well past that time. The main board was a little difficult to remove from the chassis after all screws and connectors were out. To remove the old battery, I used a solder sucker to get rid of most of the old solder which makes it easier for the old battery to pry up and out. I talked to a guy at Yamaha USA and he told me that E “gray matter should be fine after installing a new battery which I was able to get from Yamaha Canada where I live for $20 including shipping.
I will pay a technician to install the battery, as I wouldn’t be capable, and just pray it all goes alright. Equipped DX7 with a dead battery, and although I haven’t tried to replace the battery yet, I believe the scrambled memory problem is just the E!
I have what appears to be the right replacement battery, and I too am getting the scrambled LEDS, with no read-out in the LCD. However, I checked the battery status and it fluctuates over extended use (shows 3.3v at the moment). After Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos, there were the Moog and the Oberheim synthesizers, not to forget several brands of string machines. This 61-key, 50-pound piece was seen as a lightweight, portable gig enabler next to the Hammond organ. The Fender Rhodes - in the late 80s viewed as a piece of junk which "couldn't be given away" - has become a true treasure among musicians and studios. This is exactly what makes it a unique and valuable piece, as the working units (from the originally 160,000 manufactured ones) are rapidly declining.

If you reside in an EU member state besides UK, import VAT on this purchase is not recoverable. Does anyone know if there is a batter for the “gray matter” circuit as well or is there just one battery for the DX7? For comparison there was a 4 MHz clock frequency (a nice beautiful 4 MHz sine wave) at pins 4 and 5 of Sub CPU IC 13. The power of DX7 being an omnipotent solution to all musical needs, catering with its trademark-to-be electric piano on "Saving All My Love For You" and "Moonlighting", to every synth brass there would ever be.
However, by the end of the 1980s, the Korg M1 was established as the new, deep and true keyboard sound solution, and the DX7 quickly sounded shallow and obsolete.
Similarly, the Wurlitzer has found its identity, having originally been a substitute for acoustic upright pianos. No question, today the DX7 is a true treasure and a mint condition instrument will soon be sold as a rarity, and at a far higher than the list price in 1983.
You have to angle the main board between these tabs and the back of the chassis to lift the board out. The trace between the battery’s positive lead and the next component (which is a diode) had been severed.
The impact was so big that the question was whether there would ever be a need for any other keyboard.
The value was declining steeply, and any update models couldn't help the pavemaker from looking old. But could an FM synthesizer which includes even a "train" sound ever receive similar status?
To replace the battery you basically have to take the whole synth apart, but Yamaha tries to make the procedure as painless as possible.
I have checked he internal battery voltage which is 2.99v read from the top of the battery to ground, synth unplugged from mains.
As with artists and composers, it is the limitations, not the features of the instrument, which forms the originality and character.
The famous DX7 Rhodes is now known as the DX7 electric piano, and the omnipotent qualities simply labeled as the "true DX7 sound".
