In his second Pulitzer Prize-winner, The Piano Lesson, Wilson has fashioned his most haunting and dramatic work yet.At the heart of the play stands the ornately carved upright piano which, as the Charles family's prized, hard-won possession, has been gathering dust in the parlor of Berniece Charles's Pittsburgh home. His literary legacy is the ten play series, The Pittsburgh Cycle, for which he received two Pulitzer Prizes for Drama.

In his second Pulitzer Prize-winner, The Piano Lesson , Wilson has fashioned his most haunting and dramatic work yet.
When Boy Willie, Berniece's exuberant brother, bursts into her life with his dream of buying the same Mississippi land that his family had worked as slaves, he plans to sell their antique piano for the hard cash he needs to stake his future.

But Berniece refuses to sell, clinging to the piano as a reminder of the history that is their family legacy. Wilson presents a filial feud over a piano, which has historical and seemingly spiritual essence.

But I do remember really enhoying this book because the book centers itself around such themes that made up a black america in the 1950's and 60's. This dilemma is the real "piano lesson," reminding us that blacks are often deprived both of the symbols of their past and of opportunity in the present. I wanted to learn more about the piano, but the characters never really get around to explains what exactly is so important and symbolic about the piano that it must be kept within the family.
Troy is a hard man, but he is someone that you have to feel for because of all the obstacles that have stood in his way from birth. The play itself has so many raw pieces of the African-American culture woven into it that you can't help, but feel as if Wilson is talking to you as he writes the play. I know Wilson wrote a lot in bars, listening to the talk all around him, but this is a skill far exceeding just the ability to pull from reality. I wish I had seen the original starring James Earl Jones as Troy Maxson and Mary Alice as Rose.
I remember going to see this play for the first time in New Haven a few years back and being so impressed (as always) by the power of Wilson's language and the ferocity of the themes of loss and hope.
At the beginning of the book it lists the original players and mentally they fit perfectly.
