Today we will begin to learn how to play the third movement of Beethoven’s Fur Elise. In any case, please continue practicing this part of the third movement of Fur Elise and the second movement as a whole. Today we will learn how to play the second half of the second movement of Beethoven’s Fur Elise.
I want to emphasize one more time that you should first learn how to play all of the notes from this lesson correctly at a slow, steady pace.
It’s also very nice to have an actual metronome that you can place near your piano or keyboard. If you want to purchase the sheet music, you can click on the following link: Fur Elise sheet music. The lines and spaces would represent different notes if there was a bass clef there instead (we will learn the bass clef notes next week).
Note that both staves have treble clefs, so you should be able to name every note in this measure.
In today’s video lesson we will learn the next part of the second movement of Fur Elise.
Remember to rewind frequently until you internalize each part, and please put in about five minutes every single day with these videos. If you want to purchase the sheet music for Fur Elise, you can click on the following link: Fur Elise sheet music.
To review, see if you can pick out the eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and thirty-second notes in this transcription. In the first measure, some of the notes on the treble staff have dots under them, and some of the notes in the bass staff have dots over them.
If you are having trouble answering any of these questions, you can easily review this information in previous lessons. In the picture on the left there are several notes and rests that we have talked about, and a few that we have not.

One of the reasons we have not seen any whole notes or half notes is because of the time signature that Fur Elise is written in.
We have also already seen many eighth and sixteenth notes, as well as the corresponding rests. As an exercise, add dotted sixteenth notes and dotted thirty-second notes to the above chart.
In today’s video lesson we will begin learning how to play the second movement of Fur Elise. Note that the second movement of Fur Elise is much more difficult to play than the first movement. Remember that when a dot is placed next to a note, the duration of the note is increased by half of its value.
The second note has an extra partial beam on it signifying that it is a thirty-second note.
In the first measure there are some dots that appear below some of the notes on the treble staff and above some of the notes on the bass staff. I have been so busy finishing my ACT math prep book that I just do not have time to teach any theory this week. Once you can get through the whole part without making any mistakes or breaking tempo, only then should you begin to try to build up your speed. A metronome is a device used to mark time by means of a regularly recurring clicking sound. The lower staff has two eighth notes played together followed by a sixteenth rest and three sixteenth notes (well actually multiple notes being played simultaneously).
Please continue practicing this part of the second movement of Fur Elise and the second movement as a whole.
If you are having more difficulty with this part of the song than you did with the first movement, do not worry.

Note that there are also some dotted sixteenth notes – what is the duration of these notes? In fact, we only saw a thirty-second note with an extra partial beam attached to a sixteenth note, like the one in the following picture.
Recall that placing a dot to the right of a note increases the duration of the note by half its value. I hope that some of you have made it through my first 3 online piano lessons of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fur Elise. Note that you do not need to be proficient in the first movement at all in order to begin learning the second movement.
Just put in about five minutes a day, and you will be amazed at how quickly you can become proficient in this part of the song. Note that all of the notes on the bass staff are beamed together in groups of three or six. Please continue practicing the beginning of the second movement of Fur Elise throughout this week.
So if we want the left hand to play notes that are a bit higher than usual, it makes sense that we would use a treble clef instead of a bass clef to display those notes.
Once again, make sure that you rewind frequently until you internalize each note being played. Once you are comfortable playing the part correctly, then you can slowly begin to play the piece faster. Recall from last week’s lesson that each of the lines and spaces on a staff represents a specific musical note. Do not be too concerned if you cannot name these notes – we will be talking about them soon in a future lesson.
