Hey my name is Herc Magnus ya the guy you see in the pic.  I hear about 100 times a week that I look like Dave Grohl, which is actually really cool cause that guy rules!  I play in a hard rock band called Hollywood Assassyn, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada but I also love to just pick on my acoustic! Welcome to my new site.  I’m going to show you some really popular guitar chords and songs here, as well as teach you about some of the best chord progressions that are easy to play and will have you sounding amazing at guitar right away! The chart below should be a great start as to what progressions will work in certain keys, so you can just look up those chords, and start playing and sounding great almost immediately! There’s tons of great material out there that can show you things from how to tune a guitar, to how to play virtually every chord known to mankind. Well it’s 2014, and I think this is probably now the best way for a beginner to learn how to play guitar. Learning how to read a chord diagram is probably one of the most helpful things you can do in order to start playing your favorite songs fast.  Chord diagrams give you a very visual representation of how to place your fingers on the fret board in order to strum out the perfect chord that you are looking for. There are a few different ways these diagrams are used, but they basically all work about the same. The two fuzzy dots you see are actually the dots that exist on most guitar fret boards, and they signify the 3rd and 5th frets.  They are used as a visual anchor for guitarists. If any strings are played or struck without pressing on them at any fret, this called playing an open string  The standard tuning of a guitar is also shown below from 6th to 1st string, being E-A-D-G-B-E.  The first string is the thinnest, and the 6th string is the thickest. So now that you know how a chord diagram basically works, let me show you a few different ways that they can be used. The numbers at the top of the diagram X-0-0-2-3-2 tell you what fret to play that particular string on.  The X means do not play this string for this chord!  The blue dots with the 1-2-3 in them, tell you what fingers should be used to press down on that string at that fret.  You can read about proper guitar fingering here!  The A-D-A-F#-D along the bottom of the diagram tells you what notes will come out of each string if you press them according to the diagram! This is a typical progression that works in any major scale.  You can either barre or play open chords.
You can see a bunch of video's of me playing covers, with my band, or just plain fooling around on this page. I'm building this site to help teach others a bit about how to play guitar as I get asked a lot, but don't really have time to teach people. You can start by playing the root of each chord with your left hand and the chords with your right hand. Just to make sure that you understand this concept, try to apply this knowledge to another key. A final step on how to jazz piano, would be to play a scale with your right hand while you play the full chords with your left hand. As you become familiar with these chords and voicings, begin using more advanced dominant “5” chords such as 9th, 11th, and 13th chords. In certain subgenres of jazz and gospel music, you can hardly listen to the chorus of a song without hearing the 2-5-1 chord progression.
Having covered A-B-A and B-A-B voice leading techniques for approaching the 2-5-1 progression in a previous post, let’s take it to the next level by applying a new voicing technique over the 2-5-1 progression. The drop 2 voicing technique features the octave transposition of the 2nd voice (alto voice). This rearrangement is called the drop 2 voicing because of the octave transposition of the 2nd voice.


If you are not familiar with what the A and B voicing technique is, you may need to pause for a while and read it here before you continue. An A-B-A 2-5-1 progression can be broken down to: A voicing of chord 2, B voicing of chord 5, and A voicing of chord 1.
This should give you an idea of the smoothness derived either by the retention of common voices or the movement to the closest options possible.
The B-A-B 2-5-1 progression can be broken down to: B voicing of chord 2, A voicing of chord 5, and B voicing of chord 1.
An introduction of the drop 2 voicing technique can revolutionize this B-A-B 2-5-1 chord progression. D and F (outer voices in chord 5) moves down to C and E (outer voices in chord 1) respectively. Owing to the octave transposition of the 2nd voice, seventh chords that are voiced using the drop 2 voicing technique can encompass ten diatonic degrees.
Using this note distribution, you’ll have 75% of the chord tones (G, B and E) on the right and and only 25% (C) on the left.
Let’s get started in this post by breaking down the concept of the 2-5-1 chord progression. A chord progression simply means a movement of chords from one degree of the scale to another. Now that you have an idea of the major and minor 2-5-1 chord progressions respectively, let’s derive the corresponding tenth and seventh intervals. Let’s look at how we can play the major 2-5-1 chord progression using tenths and sevenths.
Using the tenths and sevenths we covered in the previous segment, here’s a 2-5-1 chord progression – check it out! Playing the 2-5-1 chord progression using tenths or sevenths alone involves so much movement of the hand. Alternating between a tenth and a seventh leads to a smoother connection between the root notes of the 2-5-1 chord progression.
There’s an alternate approach to playing the major 2-5-1 progression using tenths and sevenths. In a nutshell, there are two approaches to playing the major 2-5-1 progression – the tenth, seventh, tenth and the seventh, tenth, seventh.
Attention: A closer look at the seventh intervals for the minor 2-5-1 chord progression shows a uniformity. If you are wondering why these three chord qualities all have minor seventh intervals then you have to check out my post on what 60% of common chord qualities have in common.
There’s an alternate approach to playing the minor 2-5-1 progression using tenths and sevenths. Now that we have covered the 2-5-1 chord progression using tenths and sevenths, let’s end by learning a few chords to play on the right hand over these 2-5-1 progressions. I’m following-up the sets of videos you are showing and they are very helpful for me. Heck, Youtube has a billion videos that you can learn almost every riff ever played by any guitarist in history. This includes hundreds of song lessons, where a guitar teacher will show you exactly how to play each part of the song perfectly.
But it’s basically still the same.  You can tell where you need to place your fingers by looking at the dots, or the top row of numbers! In other words, after the I, IV, and V chords, the II chord is the next most likely to be used. Maybe D7, maybe Dm7, maybe just D, but whatever the form, it is like the cousin that likes to show up at dinner time to eat with the fam. If it happens so much, it's worth your time to master it both intellectually and hand-wise (in other words, understand it and be able to play it).

Then you first need to know the more sophisticated chord symbols and voicings used in jazz music. You can play these notes in this order, or with the E at the bottom (E-G-C), or with the G at the bottom (G-C-E).
Play these chords in sequence and listen to the distinctive sounds of these chords: the minor seventh, the dominant, and the major seventh. For instance, if you build a similar 2-5-1 chord progression in the key of G, here are the results. Pursuant to this consideration, voicing involves the rearrangement of the notes of a chord to move smoothly to the closest possible options. You may find this voicing a little challenging, however, knowledge of this 2-5-1 style in ALL keys is important.
It is clear that the movement from chord 2 to chord 5 features a retention of outer voices and the movement of inner voices to the closest possible option. For a smoother connection between the progressions, we need to imbibe what music scholars call voice leading principles. All I need is to apply them, first by much practice and use them when I play in the church.Thank you very much. It might show up in one of several forms -- it might be a major chord, it might be a minor chord, it might be a 7th chord -- but however it shows up, it is far and away the most likely chord to occur after I, IV, or V. So if you were a betting person, your odds would go sky high at that point for that succession of chords to occur.
In other words, in the Key of C, after the D chord is used, you go up a 4th (4 scale notes -- in terms of traditional harmony it is a "perfect 4th) to G.
As you continue to learn how to jazz piano, you’ll easily distinguish these jazzy or more sophisticated sounds.
To learn how to jazz piano faster, try to improvise melodies with your right hand, and eventually you’ll be able to play your own jazz style based on the chords of your favorite songs. The reverse is the case in the movement from chord 5 to chord 1 where the outer voices move and the inner voices are retained. Inspired by my role model Jermaine Griggs, I started teaching musicians in my neighborhood in April 2005.
When you start learning how to jazz piano, you’ll notice the use of more advanced chords such as a Cmaj7 or C?, a Cm7, and larger dominant chords like the C9, C11, or C13. The 5 chord (D7, or DF#AC) is built on the fifth note, and the 1 chord (Gmaj7, or GBDF#) is built on the first note of the G scale. Instead of playing the root, 3rd, 5th, and 7th, leave out the 5th, and play the Root, 7th, and 3rd on top.
