Carpenter ants differ from termites in that they have dark-colored bodies, narrow waists, elbowed (bent) antennae, and - if wings are present - hind wings that are shorter than front wings (figures 4 and 5). Termites are light-colored, have a broad waist, have straight antennae and, if present, wings are of equal length (figure 6 and 7).
Carpenter ants damage wood by excavating and creating galleries and tunnels for their nest. Finding one to several winged queens (figures 4 and 5) does not automatically mean a nest is present indoors. In almost all cases, carpenter ants seen indoors during winter in the upper Midwest are an indication that there is an inside nest. Workers may become active during winter if the nest receives sufficient warmth from sunlight, mild outdoor temperatures, or from indoor heat.
It is also possible for a carpenter ant nest to exist in a house during winter but not be noticed. The nest may be located by careful observations of worker ants, especially between sunset and midnight during spring and summer months when carpenter ants are most active. Other signs that indicate an active nest is nearby include small piles of coarse sawdust or wood shavings (figure 13), or consistent indoor sightings of large numbers of worker ants, i.e.
The best method to control carpenter ants is to locate and destroy the nest, replace damaged or decayed wood, and, if they exist, eliminate moisture problems.
Sprays on surfaces where ants travel or congregate, such as along baseboards or in holes or cracks in the walls and floors, may reduce the frequency and number of ants you see.
The keys to successful baiting are placement and monitoring; baits cannot be effective if they are not encountered by ants.
Often carpenter ant nests found indoors are satellite nests that can be traced back to a parent colony outdoors in trees, stumps, roots, fence posts, landscape timbers, and other wood structures. When this is not practical, and carpenter ants have been discovered entering your home from outdoor nests, having a professional apply a treatment of a residual insecticide around the building's exterior helps keep them out of your home.
Spray the product in a band, covering the foundation and under the lower edge of the siding to help keep ants from coming inside. Carpenter ants nest in trees in one of two situations: 1) in rotted, decayed wood or 2) in the center heartwood section of the tree.
Control of carpenter ants in trees is warranted if there are indications that ants are entering homes from colonies in trees. While the map was compiled in England, names and descriptions were written in Latin, with the Norman dialect of old French used for special entries. Still within this decorative border, in the left-hand bottom corner, the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus is enthroned and crowned with a papal triple tiara and delivers a mandate with his seal attached, to three named commissioners.

THE MEDITERRANEAN: The Mediterranean, conveniently separating the three continents of Asia, Africa and Europe, teems with islands associated with legends of Greece and Rome. FROM THE TIME when it was first mentioned as being in Hereford Cathedral in 1682, until a relatively short time ago, the Hereford Mappamundi was almost entirely the preserve of antiquaries, clergymen with an interest in the middle ages and some historians of cartography. Equally important work was also being done on medieval and Renaissance world maps as a genre, particularly by medievalists such as Anna-Dorothee von den Brincken and Jorg-Geerd Arentzen in Germany and by Juergen Schulz, primarily an art historian, and David Woodward, a leading historian of cartography, in the United States. After the fall of the Roman empire in the 5th century, monks and scholars struggled desperately to preserve from destruction by pagan barbarians the flotsam and jetsam of classical history and learning; to consolidate them and to reconcile them with Christian teaching and biblical history.
A broad similarity in coastlines with the Hereford map is clear in the Anglo-Saxon [Cottonian] World Map, c.1000 (#210), but there are no illustrations of animals other than the lion (top left).
At about the same time that this map was being created, Henry III, perhaps after consultation with Gervase, who had visited him in 1229, commissioned wall maps to hang in the audience chambers of his palaces in Winchester and Westminster. There are several species of carpenter ants that may be found infesting homes and other buildings.
Carpenter ants are very common and are frequently seen in the open, especially after sunset. It is important to try to determine whether the ants are coming from an outdoor primary nests or an indoor area, although this can be difficult.
Finding large numbers of winged ants indoors is a sure sign that an indoor nest exists and may give the approximate location of the colony. To follow carpenter ants without startling them, use a flashlight with a red film over the lens—ants cannot see red light. During spring, carpenter ants are particularly attracted to protein sources, such as tuna packed in water.
However, they are not usually effective in eliminating a nest because 1) the ants carry very little insecticide back to their nests and 2) most ants forage outside and do not come in contact with the insecticides. Trim branches that overhang buildings or electrical wiring to avoid giving carpenter ants easy access to your home. The circle of the world is set in a somewhat rectangular frame background with a pointed top, and an ornamented border of a zig-zag pattern often found in psalter-maps of the period (#223). James (Roxburghe Club) 1929, with representations from manuscripts in the British Library and the Bodleian Library, and “Marvels of the East”, by R. As the centuries went by, more and more was included with references to places associated with events in classical history and legend (particularly fictionalized tales about Alexander the Great) and from biblical history with brief notes on and the very occasional illustration of natural history. Note also the Roman provincial boundaries, the relative accuracy of the British coastlines (lower left) and the attention paid to the Balkans and Denmark, with which Saxon England had close contacts.
Some, often oriented to the north, attempted to show the whole world in zones, with the inhabited earth occupying the zone between the equator and the frozen north. They were never intended to convey purely geographical information or to stand alone without explanatory text. Some ants, including carpenter ants, have different sized workers which help the nest with a range of jobs from food collecting to nest defense.
However, they can be distinguished from carpenter ants by the uneven profile of their thorax (figure 3). They avoid light and are rarely seen outside of their colony, except when winged reproductives, called kings and queens, leave a termite colony. A satellite nest with less moisture may only support workers (the eggs would dry out in lower humidity). Wingless queens (figures 1 and 11) found walking indoors are new queens that have recently shed their wings but are still searching for nesting sites.
Workers carried in with firewood are not able to start nests in homes, nor do they damage wood structures in buildings. Be careful to prevent moisture in wood or lumber that is stored in a garage or near the house and, if possible, elevate this wood to allow air circulation. This sound, thought to be a form of communication, is made with the mandibles (jaws) and is not related to wood chewing. A delayed toxicant is critical because it allows the ants to forage normally for days or even weeks.
Control is unnecessary for the tree's health, as the ants are taking advantage of preexisting soft, weak wood to establish their colony.
India also has the largest elephants, whose teeth are supposed to be of ivory; the Indians use them in war with turrets (howdahs) set on them. Agriophani Ethiopes eat only the flesh of panthers and lions they have a king with only one eye in his forehead. Essendones live in Scythia it is their custom to carry out the funeral of their parents with singing and collecting a company of friends to devour the actual corpses with their teeth and make a banquet mingled with the flesh of animals counting it more glorious to be consumed by them than by worms. Himantopodes; they creep with crawling legs rather than walk they try to proceed by sliding rather than by taking steps.
Today, with the map in the headlines of the popular press, it may be time to give a brief resume of what is currently known about it and to attempt to explain some of its more important features in the light of recent research. Most of the maps, however, like the Hereford Mappamundi, depicted only that part of the world that was known in classical times to be inhabited and they were oriented with east at the top.
These ants are usually not wood-infesting, so it is important to correctly identify the ants before control is attempted, as effective control strategies vary with different ant species.

For this reason, satellite nests can be found in relatively dry locations, such as insulation, hollow doors, sound wood, and wall voids. You may be able to make a more accurate determination based on when you first see carpenter ants.
They emerge from nests the following spring (this can also happen during late winter) for their nuptial flights. It is common for a home dweller to enter a room early in the morning, turn on the lights, and see ants scurrying for cover. When trying to detect carpenter ants, tap the suspected area and then press an ear to the surface in order to hear any sound. During that time, ants consume or carry the bait and return to the nest to share the bait with the rest of the colony. Any bait that is ignored should be cleaned up and substituted with another, and any that is consumed should be replenished. Conventionally holds a mirror in one hand, combing lovely hair with the other According to myth created by Ea, Babylonian water god. Talbert (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2000), which I employ throughout my book, but with the caution that in dealing with the manuscript culture of medieval Europe, it is misleading and anachronistic to speak of “standard” or “correct” spellings, especially of geographical words. Crone of the Royal Geographical Society, revealed that despite the antiquity of many of the map's sources much was almost contemporary with the map's creation and was secular.
Many were purely schematic and symbolic, showing a T, representing the Mediterranean, the Don and the Nile, surrounded by an 0, for the great ocean encircling the world, sometimes with a fourth continent being added.
1325), a church administrator and prebendary of Haldingham and Sleaford (now Holdingham and Lafford) in Lincolnshire from 1276 to 1283 who later served with the Bishop of Salisbury and as prebendary of Norton in Hereford Cathedral in 1305. Indoors, carpenter ants feed on meats and pet food, as well as syrup, honey, sugar, jelly, and other sweets. If you find carpenter ants in your home during late winter or early spring, that suggests the ants are coming from a nest in the building.
This allows wood rot to set in, which results in wood decay, giving carpenter ants the opportunity to colonize the tree.
Sometimes identified with Sirens, the mythical enchantresses along coasts of the Mediterranean, who lured sailors to destruction by their singing. 400), a text that was often attended during the Middle Ages by diagrammatic “maps” illustrating the concept.  See also David Woodward. Even though the inscriptions on the maps gradually became more and more garbled and the information more and more embellished, distorted, and misunderstood, they nevertheless retained their tenuous links with ancient learning.
Although the maps were still dominated by biblical and classical history and legend, most other information seems to have been acceptable and was accommodated within the traditional framework. On a bright sunny day, ants may be seen walking randomly through different areas of the house.
Carpenter ants use knots, cracks, holes, and old insect tunnels to gain access to these areas. The circle one-third of the way from the bottom is Jerusalem, the Map's central point, with a crucifixion scene above it ([§387-89]). Gautier Dalche (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes [IVe Section], Paris) for permitting me to use his scrupulous edition of EMM, with a learned introduction, here and in my book. Its images and decoration have been examined from a stylistic standpoint by Nigel Morgan and put into the context of their time, while the late Wilma George examined the animals in the light of her own zoological knowledge [2] The chance discoveries of fragments of other English medieval world maps in recent years [3] have expanded the context within which the Hereford World Map can be examined, and the Royal Academy exhibition, 'The Age of Chivalry' of 1987 enabled the map to be displayed in the company of other non-cartographic artifacts of its own time. Do not spray or dust other areas of the home, especially where carpenter ants are seen, as this can reduce the effectiveness of the bait. They may appear in structures in late winter and early spring as they swarm from a satellite nest. In the Hereford map they could revel in this pictorial description of the outside world, which taught natural history, classical legends, explained the winds and reinforced their religious beliefs. The two upright fingers branching up from the Mediterranean are the Aegean and the Black Sea with the Golden Fleece at its extremity.
