The following six families of bees are found in the New York City area: the Colletidae (18 species), Halictidae (46 species), Andrenidae (63 species), Melittidae (3 species, although these have not been observed in several decades), Megachilidae (40 species), and Apidae (59 species).
Green metallic bees (genera Agapostemon, Augochlora, and Augochlorella, 6 species): Medium-sized (~1 cm).
Sphecodes cuckoo bees (genus Sphecodes, 9 species): Small- to medium-sized, sparsely haired, and shiny. Miner bees (genus Andrena, 57 species): The most diverse group of bees in New York City but also the most difficult to observe. Leaf-cutter cuckoo bees (genus Coelioxys, 5 species): Medium-sized with tapering triangular abdomen.
Mason bees (genus Osmia, 8 species): Rotund, medium-sized bees, at times with brilliant metallic green, blue, or purple coloration. Wool carder bees (genus Anthidium, 2 species): Rotund, medium-sized bees with distinctive yellow and black coloration. Nomada cuckoo bees (genus Nomada, 19 species): With yellow striations on abdomen, may appear wasp-like. Since 2006, when large die-offs of honey bee hives first occurred from what has been termed colony collapse disorder (CCD), researchers are concluding that the syndrome is likely caused by a combination of factors, including exposure to pesticides, environmental stresses, malnutrition, and new or re-emerging pathogens.

Although not native to the North America, honey bees can be readily managed and today are the most important pollinators of large scale agriculture crops.
My son said he saw someone on the news that said they had these but the nest was in the ground and their son ran through the yard and fell through and was stung literally to death.
So on our roadtrip in Quebec we stopped at an old friends cottage that was rundown and never used due to the poor shape of it from spring floods. Most are solitary nesters that build their nests in the soil and emerge only in early spring.
Build nests in cavities, including building walls and hollow plant stems such as rose, lilac, and Virginia creeper.
Exist in New York City both as managed hives and feral colonies in parks, cemeteries, and other green spaces.
They are very common in the southeastern United States and southern Canada and known for their football shaped, paper nests. In addition to gathering pollen, these bees also collect floral oils from yellow loosestrife flowers. Often observed on the garden plants lamb’s ear (Stachys lanata byzantina) and foxgloves (Digitalis species).

I am by no means a bee or wasp expert, but I have done some of my own research and this is what I have come up with.
And, I witnessed their aggression towards each other, over something in particular…food, space, whatever I do not know.
These oils are mixed with the pollen as food for their developing larvae and are used to line their brood cells to provide a protective layer. These bees have not been found in New York City in many decades and are of regional conservation concern. It cleanly removed it dropping into the bag, twisted it up and had it home within’ 40 min. This nest ist just awesome I’ve tried to count how many holes there are in it but its impossible.
