Venomous black widow spiders were found in supermarket grapes at least twice this month, in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania-area chain grocery stores. Black widows, which can be deadly, are known to build their webs in grape vineyards to catch insects. Upon closer examination Duckhorn realized the spider had the characteristic red markings of a black widow. As a precaution, Aldi said it would pull all varieties of all grapes from its Milwaukee-area stories. A Pennsylvania woman discovered a creepy crawly surprise while washing off the grapes she bought at a local food store. Yvonne Whalen said she was rinsing and eating the fruit on Thursday when she found what an expert said was a dangerous black widow spider.

A shopper at a supermarket in Yarmouth, Massachusettes, recently purchased a bunch of grapes that included a potentially deadly surprise.
According to FOX News, after Laurie Kaiser stored the grapes in her refrigerator for almost a week, she decided to pull off a few of the fruit as a quick snack. Kaiser says the black widow managed to survive five days in the refrigerator — during which time she and her husband had been eating the fruit — before it was discovered (EEEEK!!!). Not just any spider, however, but a black widow spider, distinguished by having a red hourglass shape on its back.
Although most black widow spider bites are not fatal, they can be if the individual is allergic.
A manager told [the customer] the entire shipment of Anthony’s brand organic red seedless grapes would be removed from the shelves.

Since the 1990s, the iconic arachnids have occasionally found their way into supermarket produce, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported earlier this month when it broke the news of a black widow in a bag of grapes from a Milwaukee-area Aldi supermarket.
As she examined the grapes in the container for mold, she noticed a spider moving amid the fruit. Kaiser thought it best not to release the spider into her garden, but called the manager of her local Shaw’s supermarket to report what she had found in order to warn other shoppers about a possible black widow spider infestation in the grape section.
