Visitors from around the world have been sending us bed bugs pictures to help them identify their creepy crawler and over the last 6 years have accumulated an impressive collection – we present some of those images below in a slideshow you can control. You can study all the images you like and still may not find bed bugs, the trick is, knowing what signs to look for, such as the black dots on the mattress which could indicate bed bug fecal matter; they poop your blood which darkens when dried making it look like ink stains on the mattress.
Stand up the box spring and shine a flashlight through the gauze fabric to expose bed bugs.
Active Guard Mattress Liners may be used on the mattress or box springs, killing bed bugs and dust mites for two years. Since infested garments and bed linen can't be treated with insecticide they will need to be laundered in hot water (120 degrees fahrenheit minimum). Caulk cracks and crevices in the infested building exterior, and also repair openings to exclude birds, bats, and rodents that can serve as alternate hosts for bed bugs. Monitoring devices such as the Bed Bug Monitor Traps should be placed around the infested area to help determine where the bed buge population resides.
Fecal and bloody spots (look like rust) are left on sheets and pillowcases when the engorged bed bugs are crushed. If you decide against Mattress Safe Encasements or ActiveGuard Liners, use insecticides labeled for beds such as Steri-Fab, Cimexa Dust, Phantom Aerosol, Bedlam Aerosol, or Temprid SC (See below). Dusts last longer than aerosols, but the crack and crevice tips on the Phantom and Bedlam areosols enable you to get into the smallest cracks.
Apply residual liquid, aerosol or dust residual insecticides such as Temprid SC, Temprid Ready Spray Aerosol, Optimate CS, Cimexa Dust , Alpine PT Aerosol, Transport Mikron, Bedlam Plus Aerosol, and Phantom Aerosol. Spray all baseboards, loose plaster, behind bed frames and headboards, beneath beds and furniture, and bedsprings and bed frames. Apply Temprid SC to bedsprings, box springs, and the interior of bed frames or headboards, including all cracks and joints. When bed bugs are found in upholstered furniture, apply only to the infested tufts, seams, folds and edges, but do not apply to flat surfaces where prolonged human contact will occur. Apply as a crack and crevice treatment to all baseboards, moldings, beneath floor coverings and carpets, closets, shelves, curtains, furniture and picture frames that may provide harborage to bed bugs. Apply as a coarse, low-pressure spray to harborage areas including crevices, baseboards, loose plaster, behind bed frames and headboards, beneath beds and furniture, and to bedsprings and bed frames.

After the mattress and box spring have been treated, enclose both of these with Mattress Safe Bed Bug Encasements. The female lays eggs in cracks and crevices along the edges of mattresses, box springs and bed frames. Preventing Bed Bug InfestationsIt's important to inspect used furniture, particularly bed frames and mattresses before bringing it into the home.

After coming home from a trip some infestations can be prevented by washing any clothing or bedding used on the trip. Never bring discarded bed frames, mattresses, box springs, or upholstered furniture into your home. Be careful when removing items from the infested area to other areas because you may transfer the bed bugs.
If washing is not available, sometimes heating the garments or bed linens for several minutes in a clothes dryer may work. Vacuum along baseboards, furniture, bed stands, rails, headboards, foot boards, bed seams, tufts, buttons, edges of the bedding, as well as the edges of the carpets (particularly along the tack strips). Many newer mattresses do not offer as much shelter and protection for the bed bugs to hide. If there are holes or tears in the gauze fabric or fabric of the mattress, bed bugs and eggs may be inside, as well as outside.

Active Guard Liners: Active Guard Mattress Liners may be placed on beds and are effective as both preventative and active bed bug treatments. The average life span of the bed bug is 6-12 months and they feed every 10 days or so during this time. They kill bed bugs and dust mites within 72 hours and will prevent bed bugs from infesting mattresses. Infested bedding should not be treated, but should be removed, placed in sealed plastic bags, and taken for laundering and drying at high temperature.

Bed bugs cling tightly to surfaces, so it is best to repeat vacuuming by scraping the end of the vacuum attachment over the infested areas to pull out the bed bugs. Even when the bed bugs themselves cannot be found, their hiding places can be located by looking for the spots of fecal material they often leave. Bed bugs prefer to hide in cracks and crevices during the daytime and come out to feed on the host's blood at night, usually while the host is sleeping. It is not good to use a bristle attachment, because you may transfer bed bugs to other areas since they cling to the brush. Since bed bugs can flatten their bodies, they fit in very small crevices, specially around the bed area.
Look in your boxsprings also, both top and bottom for any rips that might shelter these bugs. Simply insert the crack and crevice tip of the aerosol in the hiding place to see if any bed bugs are flushed out. Initial infestations tend to be around beds, but the bugs eventually become scattered throughout a room, occupying any crevice or protected location.
