This style of bed is built from the ground up and is excellent for people with bad backs or vision impairment.
When using sleepers it is easy to vary the height of the bed for added flexibility and interest. Box-style raised garden beds have an added advantage as they allow natural drainage, worm movement and deeper root growth.
Another advantage of the tabletop style is that a table can be moved into the sun on sunny winter days or into the shade in the hotter months, so gardening activity can continue comfortably all year round. Plants can be spaced a little closer together in a raised bed because you don’t need places to step. Gardeners wishing to extend their growing season benefit from the warming effect of raised beds.  I have also enjoyed the benefits of a winter garden consisting of greens, broccoli, cabbage, and brussel sprouts. As more and more people look at gardening as a way to grow some of their own food, to relax and get outdoors, raised garden beds have become more popular.

Just as people have all kinds of opinions on what is the best vegetables to grow, soil to use and when to plant, there are many styles of raised beds found in the back yard.
The basic idea of a raised bed is that instead of battling against poor soil conditions, you build above ground, where you have absolute control over the soil texture and ingredients, especially if the garden soil is poor or compacted or has poor drainage.
This is better for people in wheelchairs or for those who need to sit and avoid twisting while gardening. This increases productivity per square foot of bed and reduces weeding when the plants begin to mature. Each spring or fall, it’s a good idea to top dress with fresh compost and manure, or, if your bed only holds plants for part of the year, go ahead and dig the compost or manure into the top several inches of soil. It also has the advantage of preventing gardeners from walking directly on their garden beds and compacting the soil. Gardening in raised beds makes it easy to keep every square foot in production from early spring right through summer, fall and winter.

With  raised garden beds  you are not limited by the condition of the soil in the area in which you live. The past two years I have really enjoyed my winter garden of broccoli, brussel sprouts and a wide variety of greens.  By using a raised bed, in almost every growing zone, you can increase the amount of food  produced by 50 or even 100 percent. Moisture retention is important, because raised beds tend to drain faster than conventional beds.
