Whether you’re backpacking for a couple of weeks, months or even for a whole year – one of the biggest challenges you’ll face before you head to Oz is deciding on what to take with you.
If you are planning your first backpacking trip in Australia it’s good to know that how much you take with you can really shape your trip – trust us, over packing and lugging around 30kg will become pretty annoying, pretty quickly.
To help you with your trip preparation, we’ve created a handy packing checklist that you can print off and use to check items off as you put them in your backpack.
Remember that whatever you bring with you could be stolen or damaged, so avoid packing your favourite t-shirt you’ve had for years or that dress you saved up for weeks to buy.
Consider packing items that can be used for multiple purposes, like a sarong that can be used as a sheet, pillowcase, skirt and something to lie on when you’re on the beach.
One of the best things about Australia is that it is really easy to pick up many of the same items and brands that you would find at home.
Your backpack will be home to all of your belongings for the next couple of weeks or months, so choose carefully – 10–12 kg is ideal. Below is our essential backpacking checklist, download our backpacking checklist for Australia here. Driving license (if you’re planning on hiring a campervan or car while you’re out in Australia you will definitely need this). Don’t bother to bring any heavy bottles of shampoos or shower gels, you can easily and cheaply pick these up from all chemists in Australia. Backpacking in winter can give you a pristine experience and discloses the beauty and calmness of weather to you. It is advised to make a small group of friends for the adventure who are well versed with different winter adventure skills for example snow travel, snow shelters, route findings etc.

Traditional hiking boots may do well but mountaineering boots will accompany you in an effective way as they are waterproof and insulating ones.
Carry hats, gloves, mittens, goggles, gaiters and glasses along with other important things as they will protect you from sun, thunder, cold wind. Cook some calories enriched tasty food and take a bite of sugar items like chocolates and candies as sugar would help to boost your energy level. You can use two sleeping pads and one is utilized to insulate yourself from the cold ground.
Also, always remember to take a paper map; don't rely on network while visiting secluded destinations. So unless you are going to the middle of the outback, you won’t be far from getting hold of what you need. While this might seem a little extreme for your first backpacking trip, try to think about whether you really need to bring 10 pairs of shorts and 15 t-shirts. Laundry is regularly lost, damaged or taken at hostels and launderettes, so don’t pack your favourite items of clothing.
Get creative and make your own from some common items, such as a makeup container or a tube of sweets. However apart from the bonfires and snow ball games, there is something more that needs attention while winter backpacking. Thoroughly go through the maps and converse with people who have already visited that site. You are advised to wear a basic wear made of synthetic or wool fabrics on the first layer, then you should wear insulating middle layer that would give you a warm feeling and outer layer should be waterproof as well as less breathable.
A three-season tent would be a best alternative and it does not take much time to install and wrap up. If your campsite is in a windy position, dig a hole around 1-2′ deep and then set up the tent, this will prevent the tent to get damaged from windy blasts.

Gather all the information about that place like emergency services, weather, road conditions, vehicle availability etc.
Keep your sealed water bottles within your bedding or in insulated bags to prevent freezing.
There is a serious amount of detail involved in this process which I track with a spreadsheet. As it is going to be extremely cold, you need to carry the right type and amount of clothes. Everything has to be weighed on a digital scale and rationalized with safety in mind. This includes figuring out what gear gets left at base camp and what gear gets taken on day trips.
Winter conditions in the White are sufficiently dangerous that it makes sense to bring a stove, some sort of shelter, and a shovel, even on day hikes, just in case you need to spend the night out unexpectedly.
Above that, a lightweight layer of clothes will be required, which will regulate body temperature.
These items can be split across a group of three or four people but you need to manage not only your gear, but the group gear resources in these conditions. This requires good communication between team members.Defining a workable packing system is not an easy process and it has to be practiced to the point where know where everything is and can get at it quickly in poor visibility or darkness.
The fuel and water bottle are positioned toward the front and center of the pack to keep the weight on my hips, while the kitchen gear, which is mostly air, sits behind it.I then slide the blade of my avalanche shovel behind my kitchen gear down along the inside of the pack. This provides some extra rigidity to the back of the pack and is a convenient place to stow it, out of the way. For winter day hikes, I carry about 9-10 lbs less weight.I will publish my full winter backpacking and day hiking gear lists next week when I get back from my trip.
