The FAO believes that as the demand for organic food and products increases, technological innovations and economies of scale should reduce costs of production, processing, distribution and marketing for organic produce. And so it pains me when I hear people call organic food a crock or a scheme because of the higher prices organic foods carry. You can buy a trendy t-shirt for $10 at the mall, a family-sized package of bacon for $2.50 at the grocery store, and a bag of chips for 99? from the deli. Organic food is costly to produce because farmers can’t take the same shortcuts used in conventional farming, which relies on practices that are both unhealthy for us, the consumers, as well as unsustainable for the environment. Since organic dairy farmers are prohibited from administering growth hormones used by factory dairy farms, they have less output — or you know, the normal amount of milk a normal cow should be producing.
Like antibiotics, those hormones administered to factory-farmed dairy cows find their way into the final products (milk, yogurt, cheese, ice cream). Conventionally grown food includes invisible costs: increased risk of cancers and other diseases, as well as serious environmental degradation. I view organic food as preventative medicine, as an investment I’m making in my health now so that I can avoid pain, suffering, and medical bills down the road.
Plus, I view my purchasing of organic food as a donation towards a better, more sustainable planet for future generations.

When I heard this story this morning – my immediate thought was that of course organic does not mean that there are more nutrients in organic products!!! On Thursday, the superstore behemoth announced its plan to partner with Wild Oats (which you may recognize as a former subsidiary of Whole Foods) to offer a line of organic goods at unprecedentedly low prices in 2,000 of its U.S. The New York Times notes that Walmart’s big move could ultimately create a larger supply of organic goods, pushing down organic prices in the long run.
The Wild Oats organic products will be priced the same as similar nonorganic brand-name goods. We spoke with Coach Mark Smallwood, executive director of The Rodale Institute in Kutztown, Penn., about how Walmart could manage to offer such low prices, and what that might mean for organic farmers across the country. Our customers can trust that they will save money at Walmart, our suppliers can count on us for the demand and we are able to offer innovative new products. I believe that the lack of these compounds are healthier than if included, especially in foods that you don't peel before eating. Buying organic is just another form of conspicuous consumption, aimed at impressing nearby shoppers and the occasional dinner guest. Others may be doing LESS for the well-being of the animals or plants, and be able to call their food organic – again, by the government standards. I have no doubt that the nutritional value is no different between organic and non-organic food but I feel the additional investment in avoiding industrial chemicals is worthwhile to my long term health. Look at the nasty egg farm in Maine they just found – carcasses and feces everywhere, rotting right next to eggs that would later be sold and eaten. Inspite of the problems associated with pesticides, genetic enhancements in cropping technology have resulted in foods that are higher in nutritional value and are more blight and disease resistant. Ecology is a very complicated field, and we all have to think more deeply about issues such as this, rather than simply taking them at face value.
As a result, bees are dying en masse, family farms are being put of out of business, we are consuming even more chemicals, agricultural pollution is becoming an increasingly serious issue (hello, Lake Erie algae bloom!), and food allergies are on the rise (though causation is debatable, it is a definite possibility).
Furthermore, records show that GM crops are sprayed much more heavily with chemical pesticides and herbicides than their non-GM counterparts since these crops have been altered to withstand these chemicals. More importantly it makes sense to eat organic food products because the non-organic food products are typically incredibly unhealthy. Oh, and never mind the substantial reduction in world hunger that has come as a result of our much improved capacity to produce incredible yields with finite natural resources.
To start, the line will offer primarily canned goods and other pantry staples that will cost as much as 25 percent less than those of other organic brands. They will never be able to eliminate all disease, and their efforts hamper good farmers in a big way. The report is basically saying that humans can eat bug killing chemicals and medicines that make animals gain weight without IMMEDIATE health problems. Why would I purposefully eat food that could later cause health issues once someone finally figures it out? To me, healthy means eating the purest form of the food possible, not its nutritional value.
