If you have ever had radiation or surgery for cancer, lymphedema is something that you need to know about.
If you have lymphedema, there is effective treatment to reduce the swelling, prevent the condition from getting worse, and limit the risk of infection. So that you can better understand the signs and symptoms of lymphedema, contact any of the organizations listed in this brochure's For Further Information section.
If any part of your affected arm or leg feels hot, looks red, or swells suddenly, you should call your doctor as these symptoms could be a sign of an infection and you may need antibiotics.
While there is currently no cure for lymphedema, there are things you can do to reduce your risk of developing lymphedema.
Swelling of the legs is abnormal and should be evaluated by a physician if it occurs more than occasionally after a long day of sitting or standing.
Swelling may occur due to high pressure in the veins of the legs, local injury, inflammatory changes, obstruction of lymphatic fluid outflow, infection, low blood protein levels, obesity, pregnancy, fluid retention states, or drug effects. Failure of the calf muscles to pump venous blood out of the legs due to stroke, venous injury, arthritis limiting ankle motion, or inactivity. Localized swelling may be due to trauma, hematoma (collection of non-flowing blood in the soft tissue), infections, fracture, superficial thrombophlebitis (clots in veins of the fatty tissues), rupture of a tendon or muscle, cyst at a joint (such as a synovial cyst at the knee), and, sometimes, spontaneous bleeding into the tissue due to a ruptured blood vessel.
Some of the most common medications which cause leg swelling are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs taken for pain relief or for arthritic discomfort and calcium channel blockers taken for heart disease or hypertension.
Cellulitis, infection of the skin and fatty tissues of the leg may cause swelling with pain and tenderness. Swelling of the foot, especially if the skin does not pit with brief application of pressure, may be due to lymphedema, a failure of the microscopic network of channels which move tissue fluid from the extremity back to the blood stream at the level of the upper chest. After venous insufficiency, obesity is the next most common cause of lower extremity swelling in the United States. Routine daily use of graduated compression support hose, often rated at a compression level of 20-30 or 30-40 mm Hg. Lymphedema may require special treatments called manual lymphatic drainage to massage the legs over a period of time with wrapping of the legs in special “short-stretch” elastic wraps and, sometimes, compression pump therapy to mobilize lymphatic fluid from the legs back to the bloodstream in the chest by intermittent squeezing of the legs. Management of swelling of the legs often becomes a lifelong issue, but it is important because swelling will increase the risk of infection or leg ulcer and the underlying conditions may be associated with serious complications such as deep vein thrombosis or difficulty healing injuries or surgical incisions. The most common causes of leg swelling or soft tissue pain or tenderness in North America are venous insufficiency and obesity. Swelling occurs in a condition where the ankles, lower legs and feet muscles have an excessive buildup of a fluid.
She has always have problem with swollen her both lower legs to both foot and Dr Agrawal, from Rain Cross Clinic in Riverside CA, gave her Water Pill which name Furnsonside (spelling) but it is NOT help at all to reduced. Your problem and mine may be totally unrelated, but I also had and still do have this problem.
When I first discovered this, I waited near a week, assuming that I may have had some extra water retention this month due to a menstrual cycle.
I live in a area where these doctors for these problems are not available to me unless I want to travel quite a distance.
I read the comments from Debbie Canavan about the swelling in just one foot( the right one).
Hey Debbie I have the same exact problem, and I think that it is from wearing flip flops, I wear them almost all year long, and i noticed this started happening last year, and it started again a few months ago. For me it started happening when standing for prolonged periods of times (12 hours per day for 7 days) and wearing shoes that wear a tiny bit big on me. It is important to understand structures that lie in the back of the lower leg which can lead to calf swelling when injured or diseased. Two posterior compartments at the back of the leg – a superficial and deep compartment. Other important structures running through the back of the leg which are relevant to calf swelling includes the superficial and deep veins of the leg. A swollen calf may arise as a sign of inflammation following injury to one or more structures of the leg.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of a clot of clots in the deep veins of the lower leg. These conditions contribute to venous insufficiency of the legs which is the inadequate drainage of blood in the lower leg.
Edema is accumulation of fluid within the tissue spaces between the cells and within the cells itself to some degree. Kidney disease where the electrolyte and water balance is disrupted leading to water retention. Liver disease increases pressure in the veins and causes a reduction in the blood protein albumin both of which contribute to fluid accumulation. Lymphangitis is inflammation of the lymphatic vessels which impairs the drainage of the excess tissue fluid from the legs. Leg vein problems which apart from causing congestion of the blood in the legs also prevents tissue fluid from draining out  and forces fluid from the vein into the tissue spaces.

I can produce pitting just under my ankle bone and the indentation will last about 30 seconds. For the types of insects that we see as pests we need some definite ideas on how to prevent insect bites. If your reaction to an insect bite is mild you can put some ice in a plastic bag, wrap this in a small towel and hold the ice against the bite area. Try using an over-the-counter, anti-itch cream or lotion to reduce itching and redness as well. Lymph fluid helps fight infection and disease by collecting and moving bacteria, viruses, and waste through your lymphatic system, flushing it from your body. Even if you don't develop symptoms in the year following cancer treatment, you may still be at risk.
Experts generally recommend Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) for people with lymphedema.
These meetings are a good way to connect with people who understand what you're going through. Make sure that the site you go to is recommended by a reputable source, such as The National Lymphedema Network. Pain or tenderness in the legs associated with swelling is an especially important reason to seek evaluation. Further testing is based upon the clinical assessment and may include ultrasound, X-ray,CT, or MRI imaging in the legs or evaluation of the heart or blood vessels in the abdomen or pelvis. The causes of swelling in one leg may be similar to the other leg, but it is not unusual for different factors to cause the swelling in each leg.

High pressure in the veins of the legs results in fluid, proteins, and blood cells leaking through the wall of small veins into the soft tissues, especially near the ankles. Pain from cellulitis may be very severe or may manifest as tenderness and mild pain with faintly pink to bright red skin. Frequently, conservative measures are helpful and these often are started before the cause of the swelling is fully evaluated.
Resolving lower extremity swelling, if possible, prior to extremity surgery is an important means of reducing the chances of wound healing complications including bleeding, hematoma, wound breakdown, or infection. Swelling can be simply defined as the situation in which thickness of the skin increases due to some systematic symptoms. PYLORI bacteria due exposure to arsenic e coli, fecal matter nitrate and chem exposure through our mobile home parks private well. If anyone has had a problem with this and can shed some light on this for me I’d greatly appreciate it.
For just a moment, both feet were swelling, now the left foot has reduced its swelling and yet my right foot is so swollen still (feel as if my foot resembles the puffer fish). In fact it started with only pain in the ball of my foot, but no swelling, and only pain when I was barefooted. It may occur with swelling of the feet and ankles and broadly referred to as a swollen leg. The collection of symptoms together may be indicative of the cause and calf swelling on it own is non-specific meaning that it does clearly indicate an exact condition.
The lower leg itself, referring to the area between the ankle and knee, is composed mainly of muscles lying around two thin but very strong long bones known as the tibia and fibula. These are commonly referred to as the calf muscles because it is easily visible and palpable (can be felt). These leg veins have valves which helps prevent the backward flow of blood as it travels from the leg to the heart.
This thick connective tissue does not expand easily and any swelling within the compartment compresses the tissue within it. It can arise with a penetrating skin injury that allows the bacteria to enter the deeper tissue. As blood pools in the leg (venous stasis), it gives rise to symptoms such as swelling, purple to brown darkening of the skin, itching and venous ulcers on the leg. It is referred to as peripheral edema since it more commonly occurs in the feet, ankles and lower legs.
If the swelling is solely due to the torn muscle and not other underlying disease then you are essentially delaying the healing process and probably even contributing to complications by not resting. Without knowing the exact type of injury that you have sustained, it is difficult to say for sure whether this is common or not. Since you have been tested for DVT, the doctor would have also verified if there are any other types of circulatory disturbances which can causes swelling and bruised appearance of the skin. Scientists say they are so plentiful that they make up the vast majority of the living things on Earth.
In spring and summer, when the insects start multiplying and flying around, be ready to treat the bites as described above or go to a common product that is designed for another job. CDT is a combination of treatments that include special massage for lymph drainage, exercises, compression, and skin care. The National Lymphedema Network website or hotline can provide a list of support groups around the country. If you don't have internet access, call any of the hotline numbers listed at the end of this pamphlet.
While some of the causes of leg swelling may be minor self-limiting conditions, others require very urgent medical care to reduce the likelihood of major complications or death. The most common failure of diagnosis occurs due to a venous ultrasound study which is performed in a manner to rule out clots, known as deep vein thrombosis, in the deep veins of the legs and does not evaluate for failure of one-way valves in the leg veins (venous insufficiency). Frequently, leg swelling is caused by more than one factor such as venous insufficiency, obesity, and previous saphenous vein harvest for heart bypass surgery. This causes pitting edema, swelling which will leave a temporary indentation in the skin with pressure from a shoe, sock, or intentional pressure such as a squeeze with a finger.
Obesity also accelerates the stretching of the leg veins due to the effects of gravity, thus contributing to the progression of venous insufficiency.
Chronic swelling of the legs with discomfort or a heavy feeling to the legs often contributes to inactivity which worsens the problem since the calf muscle pumping of blood out of the legs with walking is an important means of getting venous blood back to the heart. It occurs as a result of some systematic conditions such as injuries, infections, fracture, diseases of joints etc.
But during pregnancy, water pills should not be used as treatment for swelling because it can be harmful for the health of mother and child. I have a severe case of H Pylori and have had it for some years as recently I was forced to see a doctor when my abdomen felt like it had a blockage in the gut.
He said that since it was in only one foot, my left one, and not only was my foot always swollen, but my leg also. Along with the increased swelling in my right foot, the skin feels so tight and it is so sore when I walk and at times just sitting or laying down it can be rather sore as well. But I sure would very much appreciate ANY advice, suggestions or possible diagnosis from a professional without having to travel so far if its even possible.
I went out last night and had no problems other than tired maybe when I went to bed around midnight. I had this for 11 days until I twisted my foot, and the swelling added to the pain except now the pain is on the upper part and not only the ball of the foot. My blood work comes back next Tuesday and I am going to be going to an orhhopedic or other type of foot specialist because I am convinced my problem will NOT be any of the two options he gave me. However, sometimes calf swelling occurs on its own with little or no swelling of the feet and ankles. The deep compartment contains the popliteus, tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum longus, and flexor hallucus longus muscles. It is also the site of two common circulation problems of the leg – varicose veins (superficial veins) and deep vein thrombosis (deep veins). Compression of the blood vessels severely compromises circulation and nerve compression may lead to pain, numbness or paralysis. It may be isolated to superficial veins of the lower legs, deep veins or affect the entire venous system.
Edema is a result of excessive fluid accumulating in the tissue spaces or inadequate drainage of the additional tissue fluid through the lymphatic system. Muscle injuries and even tears could account for all the symptoms you describe, even surface bruising.
It’s important to realize that most animal bites, including insect bites, are the result of self defense.

Some people are more sensitive to insect bites than others and may experience swelling, difficulty breathing and other more serious symptoms. These treatments should be given by a certified lymphedema therapist or someone who has received special lymphedema therapy training. Untreated leg swelling may lead to other complications such as infection, poorly-healing wounds, or clots in leg veins.
It is common for patients with chronic leg swelling to be told that the ultrasound is “normal” or “was negative for clot” while failing to test for treatable venous insufficiency. Persistent or excessive swelling may causes damage to the skin if proper medical treatment is not taken.
They ran a whole panel of labs on cvc and that included for any kidney, liver or heart abnormalities, yet it all checked out just fine. I’m getting rather worked up and scared in fear that my feet will need to be amputated or it will cause a possible fatality here. Also my doctor put me on a antiflammatory which I don’t like because it gets me dizzy.
While there are specific causes for this localized swelling, particularly when only the back of the leg (calf) is swollen, the feet and ankles often become swollen shortly afterwards. Apart from moving the lower leg and feet, these muscles also act as a pump to push blood in the veins of the  lower leg back to the heart.
The arteries and nerves within the lower leg are unlikely to present with calf swelling when injured or diseased.
Another fairly common cause is related to fluid accumulation within the leg, whether due to blood congestion or tissue fluid. However, inflammation of the deep posterior compartment and lateral compartment muscles may also be responsible for a swollen calf.  The concern with muscle swelling is that it may give rise to compartment syndrome. Infections of the leg are more likely to arise after trauma, in a person with a weakened immune system, diabetics, with circulatory problems of the legs and leg ulcers.
If you have other problems like kidney or heart disease then this needs further attention as well.
Having a massage for a torn muscle is not advised and can impede healing in the early stages. I was playing soccer, and just starting to run when it happened, it was an odd injury, as there was no contact, and just running.
While it could be related to the injury, there is the concern that this may be more circulatory related.
It really is difficult to say considering that you have been already assessed by a medical professional and possible conditions like cellulitis would have been excluded by now. We are not in a position to diagnose you and it may be worthwhile considering what your doctor has recommended. We can’t get always get away from them, but we might be able to avoid interacting with them in some cases.
Even if we stir them up by accident insects can bite us and inject some sort of toxic substance. It can develop soon after treatment, or may show up many months, years, or even decades later.
Early treatment focuses on reducing the swelling and controlling the pain, and can shorten the time that treatment is needed. In time, I suppose I will need to go to any length to see a doctor, but much rather avoid it if I possibly can. Please, I will be very grateful to get any insight on my condition here.
If Debbie is answered on this problem please write to me also as we seem to be having the same problem going on.
Now both feet and both ankles are swollen huge and hurt like they’re bruised but ache too. By only taking three pills it solved the problem, except from standing my foot gets back to being swollen. This is because many of the causes of calf swelling involve the veins or lymphatic vessels which not only drains the calf and shin but also the feet and ankles. Normally blood and tissue fluid is drained away by the veins and lymphatic vessels respectively.
The causes of acute  compartment syndrome are largely the same as those of injury and overuse. It is uncommon for peripheral edema to occur only in the calf without involving the feet and ankles. It is understandable that circumstances required you to move around but it was a very bad move at the time. You don’t mention pain accompanying this swelling as the day progresses so it is unlikely to be entirely a musculoskeletal problem. If you are not experiencing any improvement then you may want to consider consulting with a specialist physician. Your response to the injection is likely to help if inflammation is the underlying feature here that is leading to the swelling. I substituted with Advil, but I would basically have to be on it every day because my foot goes back to being swollen again and again and again. Any disorder with these structures will therefore lead to blood or tissue fluid accumulation in the calf. Chronic or exertional compartment syndrome is more likely to arise in professional athletes who are constantly in training. Because I was moving I really had only one night to rest, elevate my leg, an eleastic leg wrap for two days and have been using Ibuprofen and a topical cream for the inflammation; a hiking pole to get around and just stopping periodically to rest and elevate the leg.
She got tired of same medicine and never finally get better and no more swollen… Please HELP.
They did this within a couple of hours and I can’t think of anything unusual I might have done to cause it. This morning I woke up and I had almost no pitting, but it is starting to show up as my day continues.
I am hobbling better ?? or less, the calf swelling has gone done a wee and I am still have some pain and difficulty stepping up or down, and my whole leg will be gin to ache if I am on my feet for more than 30 minutes. My feet are starting to become very painful and every time I look at my feet, I become very frustrated.
I don’t know why me feet are swollen, it could be water, medication, but I do sit a lot, because my back becomes very painful from standing and walking and sometimes doing a little garden work. Basically, is this common for this type of injury and not resting, except 5 hours of sleep?
