It is a long held belief that a folding knife can never possess the strength to solo as a survival knife. In a laboratory stress test the Benchmade 275 Adamas withstood over 1600 inch-pounds (that’s 143 foot-pounds) of torque, and over half-an-inch of deflection before failure.
At 7.7 ounces, the the Adamas is probably the heaviest lightweight knife you could carry without ripping your pocket off.
For such a beefy folder, something that must be experienced to be believed is just how smooth the blade swings especially with the “Axis lock flip” where the Axis bar is pulled back and the momentum of the blade carries to it attention with a slight flick of the wrist. For those who prefer a fixed blade, Benchmade co-released a companion blade named the Adamas 375, another Seibert Design. The sheath options for both knives are made in either black or tan as well, but both suffer from the same affliction that many Benchmade sheaths suffer, namely being wildly outclassed by the blades they are designed to carry.
The choice of D2 steel was probably a no-brainer for Benchmade given the intended purpose of these knives. If you have a question, comment, there’s a problem with the site, or you just want to say Hi, Send Us an Email.

Should i get this one or the serrated version, for survival, i already have a non serrated pocket knife so i don't need another. I saw some bad reviews on the serrated version about the tang not extending all the way through the handle, does the same go for this version?
I'm thru-hiking the Appalachian trail starting in June after I graduate high school this year. I think that is a good idea of a "military" version, but if you guys do make one keeps the BG on it, and add a camouflage sheath too! Does anyone know when this knife is going to be vailable through gerber or through walmart or canadian tire?? Hey kid just because you cant live your dream, doesn't mean I cant so dont comment unless you actually have a comment, and my friend got the knife and loved it, thanks for making amazing quality knifes!!!
I just bought this knife a week ago and I love it, but I wish Gerber made an ultimate folding knife without serrations, that would include a fire starter and a whistle.
I'm very impressed that Gerber listened to the customers and produced the Bear Grylls knife WITHOUT serrations! Still not available in my area though, but you can bet your ass when this comes my way I'll be upgrading for sure! Love the knife me and my co-friend survivalist are hopping to get a few for our FB survival shows!!! I mostly like the design, and have been a big fan of gerber since I got the River Shorty dive knife when I was 6. I saw that your new knife came out, and i really want to be a survivalist like BG when i get older. I only buy knifes made in the USA and the gerber lmf was always a favorite of mine and I decided to take a leap and buy the Bear Grylls ultimate knife. E uma pena nao haver este produto?disponivel na Europa pois ele seria o sonho para muita gente .
I JUST RECIEVED MY FULL FINE EDGE KNIFE, IM AM IMPRESSED, THIS KNIFE IS ONE GREAT SURVIVAL TOOL.

I would never buy a knife that does not tell the buyer what kind of hi-carbon stainless or the RC hardness of the blade temper. Well, this knife is an ultimate one as described by the users(I'm not yet). But I think, the price is a little much ! I've been scouting for a good fine edged knife and when I read the announcement on Facebook. The first version of this knife (with a partly serrated edge) was insanely successful, due to its high quality, practical design, and very reasonable price.
Packaging should be the same as what is found in a retail store, unless the item is handmade or was packaged by the manufacturer in non-retail packaging, such as an unprinted box or plastic bag. Import charges previously quoted are subject to change if you increase you maximum bid amount. The fears of a folding blade includes that they are too short, have a weak pivot point, and any locking mechanism simply cannot be strong enough. A more understandable force would be to consider the lever distance of approximately two inches from the Axis lock and a force number of over 800 pounds is conceivable. The faintly textured G10 scales saved some mass so the balance point of this knife lands directly on your index finger. Buttery smooth is a common description, but the magic is in the polished metal and a pair of phosphor bronze washers that patrol the border between blade and grip with icy precision. Without a folding mechanism, the blade length could exceed four inches without stepping on the toes of local knife laws. The liquid ceramic hardens into a surprisingly durable protective coating but also minimizes the heat signature of the blade for those cutting jobs you won’t be hearing about.
Previous tacticalish Benchmade knives were forged of 154CM steel; a fine choice, but not the best choice. Everything about the 275 demands respect from the oversized scales to the excessive jimping on every corner, to the substantial crack when the blade locks into place. I really liked the ultimate knife when it came out but was dissapointed with the serrations that took up half the blade which makes it extremely difficult to do detailed work with the knife. And all that gerber did was take all of the complaints (not many) of the customers and basicly made a newer better model. But the edge is week i bent and broke the seration part of mine just by cuting litle branches. Lots of my friends lost their money buying this -4 of those knives got broke on handle or pommel! In my experience 440C stainless, 5160 and 1095 steel is the best for edge retention and durability if quenched and tempered correctly. If you reside in an EU member state besides UK, import VAT on this purchase is not recoverable.
And with a handle thickness just under three-fourths of an inch, when deployed the Adamas 275 feels just like a fixed blade.
In fact, the mechanism is so silky, and the blade so massive, that you can deploy the blade to full attention without releasing the Axis lock; just a firm downward shake on the handle followed by an upward jerk to seat the blade.
While the fuller’s diminutive size saved little weight, it was more likely added for strength and to breakup the significant amount of otherwise bland blade D2 real estate. At 4.2 inches, and just a hair thicker, the skeletonized handle allows this D2 steel mini-monster to be longer and wider than the 275, but at a weight savings of more than two ounces over its folding brother. The coatings come in two flavors from Benchmade; black and desert tan, but while the 275 is available with desert tan scales, its blade options can be any color as long as its black. It’s build quality equals the Adamas and it’s additional pockets and straps are welcome additions when needed.
Of course the best choice for steel is always debated, but some agreement is found with steels that should be avoided.
Love the cross saw - is a fave, almost too good to use (which is why I am fond of the A?8 jungle knife,) but this is the best.
They didnt just change the serration they also changed the grind of the blade and fixed the problem with the pomel.

Unless you can come up with a good answer I will toucher myself by not watching any Bear Grylls Man vs Wild this week and it's only monday! If a cutlery can't list the exact type of blade material than the knife is not worth your money, there is a lot of cheap hi-carbon stainless steel types that make crappy but somewhat sharp blades, 440A is one of them. But did you know Brit survivalist star Bear Grylls, 37, once crossed the North Atlantic in an inflatable boat, or that he circumnavigated the United Kingdom on a jet ski? Gerber did everything right, including putting the knife in reach of even the humblest at around $52.
But what sets the 275 apart from not only other Benchmades, but from all other knives in this category is that the Adamas has the strongest Axis Lock ever made which says a lot given the incredible strength of the regular Benchmade Axis mechanism. Two other obvious differences between the 275 and 375 is that the fixed blade version has no fuller but does contain a wicked serrated saw-back along a majority of the blade. My previous Benchmade favorite in the knife space the 375 now occupies was a Nimravus Cub in 154CM. The D2 steel is quite edgeworthy and matches the demands of this slicing machine.  Whether fixed or folding, the Adamas knives will fight to the end. We now make the Ultimate Knife with a fine-edge from the top of the handle to the tip of the blade. Seeing as how Gerber is a company that listens to its customers they have changed it so the pommel doesn't break and it doesn't have serations. Grylls, who served three years in the British Special Air Service, has more recently worked with Gerber Legendary Blades on a namesake line of knives and survival products. Now you, too, can parachute into some loathsome part of the world, eat stuff that makes you puke, and return home little worse for the experience. However, a partially serrated main blade is available on the 275 folder.  The stock sheath that comes with the 375 addresses covering the blade quite well, but really needs an effective thumb ramp and and truly tunable compression adjustment in order for the user to customize the security and deploy the blade at will. As a D2 steel, the higher carbon and lower chromium contents allows rust and staining to take hold easier than with stainless steel options.
It was a fine little fixed blade, but needed to visit the sharpener more often than I liked. If B&B did quality leather sheaths I would definitely get one for this and the jungle knife. Using the same high carbon, stainless steel drop-point blade and texturized rubber handle this is equally tough and unmistakably Bear-inspired. 1) A better blade steel, one you can be proud of and mark on the knife instead of "mystery steel".
Which makes it as close to perfect as possible besides not being USA made and the mystery material it is made from.
We caught up with Grylls late last month to talk machetes, snare wires, and the debate around serration on blades built for survival situations in the jungle or woods. As a softer steel, the Nimravus took an edge quickly, but what if I was too busy using the knife to stop and hone it?  Enter the D2 steel choice.  D2 is an air cooled steel that often Rockwells at or over 60. I cannot imagine under using anything during a WROL so I’ll be keeping a diamond or two in my pocket and in my pack. Housed in a nylon and hard rubber military-grade sheath, a diamond-coated knife sharpener, emergency whistle, fire starter and survival guide are all integrated.
2) The other, as has been metioned before, a good survival knife would benifit greatly from a reflective surface.
Gerber is a great company and will continue to be one as long as it listens to its customers. Before I spent time with it, I thought it would be an ungainly, blocky, heavy slab of sharp steel that would be about as much fun to use as chopping ice with a rock. D2 is also known as a semi-stainless steel meaning its higher chromium content resists rust, corrosion and staining better than other high carbon steels.
