Back in the day, when the year started with the numbers 18 and the Coca Cola Company was founded, a little town in Pennsylvania named Johnstown became famous. An accident was really waiting to happen and in 1889, after several days of heavy rain, the dam started to swell up and fill with water.
At 3 PM the dam could not stand the pressure anymore and burst under the weight of 20 million tons of water. The Johnstown flood was for the longest time the largest loss of civilian life in the United Stares.
Owning a checklist that outlines all of the “dos and don’ts” for prepping is an absolute essential.
Last but not least, this checklist even has all of our top survival products listed inside.
Everything always starts with wood so begin by finding atleast one tree and cut it down with your hands by holding LMB. Afterwards open your invetory with theA E key and in the upper right corner there is a 4x4 crafting grid as seen belown. The Crafting Table is your best friend, it allows you to craft most things in the game, when you press RMB on it you will get a interfaceA with a 3x3 crafting grid. Next you put 2A sticks in the mittle of the 2 bottom rows then fill the top row with wooden planks just like the image below. As you can see, there are other types of pickaxes such as golden pickaxe or stone pickaxe, we will talk more about these in anotherA chapter.
In this chapter we will talk about mining, first thing to do is find a cave, just walk around and you should find one. Before you go further into the cave you shouldA acquire some torches either by looking for some coal ores or smelting logs in a furnace, choose what way you which toA acquire coal below. You should now have a few coals that you then together with a stick can craft into 4 torches like below.
As you can see, there are 3 slots the upper one is the thing you're going to smelt and the lower is the fuel that will be used to smelt, now just smelt the logs and you will get charcoal, like this. After you've collected your charcoal its time to craft the torch, you A will need charcoal and sticks then just put it all together like below.
Now that we have torches we may continue the mining, here is the oresA you can mine using stone pickaxe.
Try to find the first one iron ore and the second one coal ore together you may smelt them into iron ingots that we will be using later but now we should be starting building a shelter. In this chapter we will be talking about sheltering, mostly from the night and the mobs, but also for storage. With the wool you just need 3 planks and you can make a bed, this bed will be used to skip the night for now because we're not ready to fight just yet. To sleep you just have to place out the bed with RMB then pressA RMB again on it, make sure its night and there are no mobs around.
Now you're ready for some realA tree cutting try to get a lot of logs and aftewards its time to find the perfect spot to build.
The perfect spot should be somewhere close to a forest and some type of water source (optionally) try not to build to in a desert for example, here's the spot I've choosen. Starting off you might want to make a smaller shelter like a box of wooden planks I would say something like this. Seems good for a start, now we probably need a door and some wayA to store our items, first of we can make a door by putting 6 wooden planks in aA crafting table just like below. Now we just need storage and this can be acquired using chests crafted with 8 wooden planks in crafting table just like below.
As you have notice you might be pretty hungry by now and we're going to talk about all the types of foodA available starting with meat. The chicken drops raw chicken which gives 2 hunger points when eaten raw (warning it has a 30% chance of give poison effect). These fishA are all acquired through fishing, to start off we need a fishing rod which is crafted using 3 sticks and 2 strings. Let's talk about the fishing process, start of by finding a water source and I would personally suggest a bigger water source like a lake, here is the one I have choosen. The second way is by seeing a trail of bubblesA appearing going up against your floater and at the point it goes down in the water like before its catchable like the image below. When the floater goes under the surface press RMB again and a fish will fly up out of the water straight into your inventory.
The hoe can be crafted alike the other tools we've made so far, its crafting recipe looks like this.

We've got the hoe now we just need some farm land, a great tip is to find a flat place like the plains biome which has a lot of grass to farm on I have choosen this spot close to my house. Thanks for the feedback, I am still working on the blog and I'll keep your feedback in mind!
Committed to providing you and your family with the best survival knowledge, skills and equipment. Foretrex® 401The Foretrex 401 is a slim wrist-mounted GPS navigator perfect for outdoor activities that require the use of both hands. This past week we have crossed a huge milestone here at Modern Survival Blog, when someone out there was number 1,000,000 to have visited us! When I started this blog in January 2010, I wasn’t sure where it would go or if people would be interested, or even if I would continue the effort for very long. I appreciate that you have visited Modern Survival Blog and have helped me reach this milestone. I hope that Modern Survival Blog continues to provide you with interesting or helpful information while we remain focused on the general notion of survival preparedness and current event risk awareness, while also diversifying in other areas of interest or curiosity.
You have earned your place as one of the best survival sites on the web and in my opinion THE best.
Ken I appreciate the work you and your wife have put into this site and hope it pays off for you in the long haul.
It was not for its beautiful weather or women, but for a reason much more prosaic – a huge flood that almost wiped the city from the map of the world.
Officials tried to warned people in Johnstown, but because there were many false alarms in the past, no action was taken.
Forty minutes later, the water was streaming down in angry waves, taking everything down the valley towards Johnstown.
Whole houses, trees, numerous animals and people were trapped on the remnants of formerly buoyant city. Other floods badly affected the city in 1894, 1907, 1924, 1936 and 1977, the last one caused by the Laurel Run Dam failure.
The dam failure proved to be one of the most dangerous things that can happen to people and proved that there needs to be a firm set of laws regarding building and maintaining dams. Without a checklist you’re quite literally flying blind, making decisions based on a whim, and not rock solid data.
This makes it so easy to get started without ever once feeling like the task of prepping is too much to handle.
No need to wander the Internet in search for the perfect gear because your checklist comes with it included inside.
This Blog is in the Create A Survival Guide Blog Contest contest, now Complete!See the Final Leaderboard! Coal oreAlright to make torches you will need coal and you can carefully look through the top of the mine (trying not to go into the dark due to mobs) then you just find a block looking like the block below and mine it. Lets begin building, first we might need some more logs and an easier way to get some is by making an axe I hope you have some cobblestone left from earlier, else go get some and also some sticks, then make a axe like below. Well that will come in handy now as we need a bucket to carry water for the farming, the water will keep the farmlands hydrated which gives it more possibility in growing the corps, to craft the bucket just follow the recipe below.
Overall it feels a bit inconsistent to me.Nevertheless good luck with the contest although you're competition! A bit more story would have been nice, but it's an essentials kind of guide.Anyway, I got here by your advertising so hence, I shall advertiseA mine. Foretrex 401 combines a high-sensitivity waterproof GPS receiver, electronic compass and barometric altimeter into a lightweight device ideal for hikers, skiers and campers.
I very much like the balanced approach you take to your reporting and the broad coverage you provide. I come here several times a day to read and ponder, and don’t have to worry about bazaar reports about alien reptile invasions, star gates in the Red Sea or people pretending to be mystics and seers. Some great and fascinating stuff happens on good old planet earth that we know very little about.
Remember, deadfalls are not toys and cannot make distinctions between targets that may set it off. Between the years 1838-1853 a dam called South Fork Dam was built about 14 miles above Johnstown and over the years modified to serve the need of exclusive South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club.
An hour later, the huge stream of water, trees, debris and rocks hit Johnstown at the speed of 40 miles per hour.
The Stone Bridge that once towered above the town got piled under piles of garbage from the flood and caught fire.

The damage to Johnstown and surrounding cities was about $20 million and debris was covering 30 acres around the city. NOTE TO SELF: When your city is prone to floods or other types of natural disasters, consider moving.
Inside this checklist you’re going to learn there’s more to prepping than you ever imagined.
My solution is to uncheck the box 'publish live' and see if there any changes need to make, with for example large pictures. Copy the : 'direct link' link, and paste the link in the add picture box when your making the blog. All creations copyright of the creators.Minecraft is copyright Mojang AB and is not affiliated with this site.
To share data easily, you can connect Foretrex to your computer with USB or just send data wirelessly to another device.Retrace Your StepsNo matter where your adventure takes you, you'll never worry about getting lost with the Foretrex 401.
I check in a few times a day to read up on many different items and your encouragement in gardening and many ways and items that will help to be prepared and survive, a million thank you’s to you both! If you're happy with it, update it by checking the 'publish live' box and voila, problem solved. When the water passed Johnstown, it rolled up the other side of the hill, but gravity pulled it down, causing a second wave of water and debris to hit the city.
NOTE TO SELF: Dam failures are dangerous because the strength of running water can cause not only damage to your property, but also damage to utility pipes and wiring around your property and subsequently cause secondary harm. Just turn on Foretrex's TracBack® feature, and you can retrace your path back to where you started. NOTE TO SELF: Check your area for dams and check the current condition the dam is right now.
Keep track of your bearing and altitude with Foretrex 401's electronic compass and barometric altimeter. This notch acts as the female part for the male part of the vertical stick. The picture above is the bottom side of the horizontal stick. You can save locations in memory as waypoints, so you always can find your way back to any important place, like your campsite or vehicle.
The horizontal stick will balance on the male portion of the vertical stick like suchThe trigger mechanism is the next to be built. Even when you think the flood is over, there may be a second wave of water, so do not return to your house until deemed safe by local authorities. For even more data, connect Foretrex 401 to a wireless accessory, such as a heart rate monitor, cadence sensor, or clip it on your bike with the accessory bike mount. To keep track of your trip, connect your Foretrex to your PC or Mac with USB to store your waypoints, routes and tracks on your computer. You also can share waypoints, routes and tracks wirelessly with another Foretrex 401.Get ConnectedYou've been busy exploring and now you want to store and analyze your activities.
If you study the pictures closely, it will become apparent how the trigger is set.Take the horizontal stick and fit the male part into the female socket. With a simple connection to your computer and the Internet, you can get a detailed analysis of your activities and send tracks to your outdoor device using Garmin Connect. The flat portion of the horizontal stick should be facing the direction of the rock as it will bear the weight of the rock. This one-stop site offers an activity table and allows you to view your activities on a map using Google Earth. Explore other routes uploaded from more than 12 million customers and share your experiences on Twitter and Facebook. Getting started is easy, so get out there, explore, and share.Plan Your Next TripBaseCamp™ lets you view and organize your maps, waypoints, routes, and tracks and send them to your device. It displays topographic map data in 2-D or 3-D on your computer, including contour lines and elevation profiles. I am a wildland firefighter, wilderness medical first responder, and attended NMU for environmental conservation.I much enjoy practicing primitive skills, researching ancient societies and cultures, and focus a lot of time and energy on studying plants and fungi.
