The “we’re all in this together” prepping mantra was definitely not lost on Doctor Joe Alton and his wife, Amy – better known as Doctor Bones and Nurse Amy. Doctor Bones and Nurse Amy just released the third edition of their potentially life-saving best-selling book, The Survival Medicine Handbook. The Survival Medicine Handbook has grown by several hundred pages and now includes some information which will most likely help readers survive active shooter situations and the rapidly growing number of possible pandemic diseases around the planet. When talking with Doc Bones about the release of the third edition of the book, the conversation was once again an enlightening one. Learning how to shoot a gun, grow your own groceries, and raise livestock to prep for a TEOTWAWKI scenario all take time, effort, and money. The active shooter portion of the book will likely be a favorite among readers, whether or not they have read the first two edition of The Survival Medicine Handbook or not. The Orlando shooting merely highlighted the threat we all face on a daily basis from mass shooters now, before a TEOTWAWKI situation occurs. Doc Bones shared a multitude of information about dealing with mass casualty incidents in the active shooter section of the third edition of the best seller. Some of the other medical preps discussed in the latest version of the book include items that can be used to stop bleeding, how to react if you are find yourself in the role of a medic under fire, and the myriad of infectious disease which are showing up more frequently across the globe right now.
Doc Bones and Nurse Amy also recently released a Zika virus handbook and an Ebola handbook to help others prepare for and prevent the spread of the evolving infectious diseases.
The good doctor also pointed out the expected 500,000 tourists for the Olympics in Brazil, which is basically ground zero for Zika, has the potential to cause an even larger spread of the virus. The medical preparedness skills you can learn from Doctor Bones and Nurse Amy do not end with the printed work.
Joe and Amy are also popular presenters at preparedness events, such as the massive 3-day hands-on training offered at the annual Prepper Camp in the hills of North Carolina. The Alton’s took their prepping education goals old school last year when they created the Doom and Bloom Survival board game. If you’re scheduled to work the night shift as a nurse, you’d better start saving up on that sleep and getting ready for long nights that will switch between being arduously boring and tremendously busy, seemingly at random. Below, read through 10 tips that can be helpful to you as you prepare for the night shift routine so you’re not instantly overwhelmed, whether you’re rotating from the day shift or starting a brand-new position entirely. One of the worst ways to set yourself up for an energy crash later in your shift is by relying too heavily on mugs of coffee to keep yourself awake and alert.
When you regularly work the day shift, you can expect either a steady stream of patients or at least know the ebbs and flows of typical clinic or hospital day traffic. Night-shift teams in hospitals are often known for being rather tight-knit, probably as a response to the lack of urgent happenings every other minute, allowing nurses, doctors and other personnel to get to know each other better.
Some nurses who work only the night shift complain about having their career momentum stalled, particularly those who were moving up quickly when previously working the day shift. When there’s no natural sunlight to keep you in a cheery, alert mood, and you only have dull-colored nursing scrubs to stare at otherwise, you can feel like you’re living in a muted environment, which can be depressing. Brittney Wilson, RN, BSN, also known as The Nerdy Nurse, is a Clinical Informatics Specialist practicing in Georgia. What motivated you to start making YouTube video’s specifically dealing with medical issues after TSHTF? Are you involved in preparedness in your own life in any other ways – such as food storage, gardening, firearms, etc?
Oil of oregano, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Zinc, Tincture of Elderberry, and Echinacea seem to have good reputations at this point.  Herbs are kind of hit or miss but, in my opinion, I would use these before antibiotics. Then you're gonna love my free PDF, 20 common survival items, 20 uncommon survival uses for each.
Great interview Rourke, I watch her video’s all the time and she has a very matter of fact attitude toward medicine. I am happy that professionals will contribute to the body of knowledge and welcome nurses and doctors who can help us in our planning and possibly our first aid.
It’s important to add that no one in this country can tell you or advertise that one of these supplements or herbs can treat or cure a disease and sell you the product.
Are there really people with “100,000 rounds ammunition, an arsenal of guns…and NO TRAINING”? Nurse debriefing is an effective method of coping with a negative patient outcome as well as a learning tool. Nurses know all too well that not every patient is going to have the outcome they were working towards. Common thoughts that run through a nurse’s head after the unforeseen death of a patient – or even a near miss – are typically regretful in nature.
The term debriefing is used in many different work environments, especially in those where multiple people have come together to achieve the same goal. As a nurse, that common goal you have is to act in the best interest of the patient to restore their health. The very act of talking about a difficult case, and even reliving it with the others who experienced it with you, will help you to deal with what happened quickly so that you can move on from it.
A formal debriefing may not be conducted after each hard case you work, but you can still follow these steps on your own to give yourself peace of mind.
Try to eat a variety and range of foods with at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables each day.

If you prefer to have different food because of your race and cultural background, talk to your carer about what you would like to eat. No single food provides all the nutrients we need, so it’s important to eat a wide variety of foods. For most of us, eating food is really enjoyable, particularly if it’s something we really like. The two learned medical experts are on a mission to educate the masses in the hope that their words and guidance will help save lives after the SHTF.
And, it is written in plain English so we can all understand the text and learn how to follow the mountain of survival medicine data contained inside. Joe and Amy fully understand that medical preps are the most difficult aspect of living off grid or preparing for a disaster. But, these skills can be accomplished without many years spent in medical school – making the survival training advice in the Dr.
During a long-term disaster when society breaks down within weeks, perhaps even days, the likelihood of being faced with the barrel of a gun pointed in your face increases substantially. The new chapter also deals with, and strongly encourages, enhancing situational awareness skills.
He questioned the wisdom of encouraging so many people to attend the epicenter of the outbreak, fearing an epidemic could stem from the infected tourists traveling back home after the festivities in Rio end. Alton noted the ongoing exercise in futility being undertaken in Brazil to stop the Zika virus before the Olympics begin. The enigmatic couple also shares health and safety information and medical prepping advice on their website, Doom and Bloom. On their American Survival radio show Doctor Bones and Nurse Amy discuss the pressing events of the day which can impact both our Constitutional rights and very existence – now and into the future. Your mission is to have your character accumulate supplies like food, fuel, weapons, and medical supplies, as well as recruit followers. The tips you learn and knowledge you gain could very well save your life during a disaster! Unlike the day shift in hospitals and medical clinics, the night shift often sees a less steady flow of traffic, though things can get really messy and hectic should an emergency occur overnight. Drinking a lot of coffee early in your shift may help you feel energized at the start of your shift, but you’ll find yourself lacking only a few hours later, and eventually you won’t be able to stay alert no matter how much coffee you stuff yourself with. At night, it’s often more difficult to stick to a routine, namely because there can be long stretches where nothing is happening, only to be interrupted by a serious emergency out of nowhere. Night shifts can be hard to sit through, especially if you’re more of a day person, so knowing who you can rely on during those long, rote stretches can be a big advantage to you in the long run.
This has less to do with the job performance of those working the night shift and more to do with the big advantage of working during the day, which is the networking aspect. By wearing bright, cheerfully colored nursing scrubs, you can not only boost your mood, but also that of your patients, who not only have to put up with a medical incident, but also staying awake at whatever remote hour it is.
In her day job she gets to do what she loves every day: Combine technology and healthcare to improve patient outcomes. Please don’t ever tell a nightshift nurse or CNA you have the easy shift, you have no idea, how 3 people take care of 47 residents when all breaks loose and we do it without anyone able to help, give respect where its do, and do it when being awake is not natural for the body all night, and still go home, find away to sleep and take care of our kids, husbands, etc, we are prone to sleep deprivation and more risk for health issues, why do we do it? Will it be defined by stocking STUFF, piles of gear and useless crap without a knowledge base to support it?  Or will we seek to be more than just fringe-element consumers bent on amassing piles of survival-junque? I need to know it and how to use it like the back of my hand.  The same is true with weaponry. If improperly used, antibiotics can do more harm than good.  To me, It is wise to employ less invasive measures first. This will also subscribe you to my newsletter so you stay up-to-date with everything: new articles, ebooks, products and more!
These tragic endings can affect the psyche of every person involved, especially in a situation where the death of the patient could have been avoided. You way agonize over choosing one method over another, or assuming that another nurse had followed a certain procedure. At certain milestones, or when the task has been completed, that team of people get together and summarize the entire process and final result. Debriefing is usually a strategy used by a risk management team after something goes wrong when trying to reach that goal. Participants have to feel comfortable in knowing that what is discussed in the debriefing will not become common knowledge to the entire floor, clinic, or nursing staff.
Structure should be applied so that one person gets to speak at a time, and all thoughts on the event are heard. As soon as the problem has been identified, shift the conversation away from the who and what and work on the how to fix the problem. The goal is to obtain important information that could help others so you want everyone involved to feel they can talk freely.
If your facility is in the habit of doing a quick debriefing after each case, these should take only 2 or 3 minutes.
These are constant small traumas you are being exposed to, and the best way to keep your head together after them is by releasing any frustration or doubt.
Remain humble in your position and constantly aware that there is always room for improvement.

Talking out the steps you followed, and understanding where you could have done better will not only make you a stronger nurse, it will give you the closure needed to continue on to the next patient. Perhaps you could offer to plan and cook a meal so that other people could learn about the food you like to eat.
Readers will learn in greater detail how to treat both gun and knife wounds, and even changes to military procedures regarding how to stop bleeding when dealing with ballistic wounds.
Many medical conditions could be aided by herbal remedies – the supply of conventional medications will quickly come in short supply during a long-term disaster. Armed soldiers are currently going house to house and forcing residents to allow spraying inside their homes. They also create highly detailed and easy to follow videos on their companion YouTube channel, and share their own knowledge and that of other prepping experts on the The Survival Medicine Hour podcast. Nights work better for a lot of nurses and offer a unique experience both on the floor and off. If you need coffee, try a single cup later on in your shift when you just can’t manage any longer without it, for a last-minute alertness-boosting aid. Most of the hospital or clinic’s higher-ups will be at work only during the day for the most part, meaning they’ll interact primarily with day-shift nurses per routine. She can best be described as a patient, nurse and technology advocate, and has a passion for using technology to innovate, improve and simplify lives, especially in healthcare.
To make this a reality, I encourage folks to seek out training from a good school of their choice. I am also a huge fan of nasal saline irrigation (snorting saltwater) for sinus infections.  Works wonders! As a nurse, it is natural to feel certain emotions after these events, and debriefing can help in putting what happened into perspective.
Rather than allow that self-doubt to stop you in your tracks, take the time to debrief and learn from mistakes to avoid them in the future. This is used most often to recognize areas in the process that could be improved on for the next similar project. All interested parties are brought together and walked through what happened in order to find out what happened during the care of the patient that either caused a sudden deterioration in health or even death.
Most mistakes are the result of one of two things; either someone lacked the necessary technical expertise or there was a problem with communication and teamwork. The longer you wait to bring everyone together, the less likely it is that you will all be able to reach the same conclusion.
In situations where others could benefit from knowledge gained, it should be presented in a way that does not name any one or group involved. The conversation should start with those who have less seniority so that they don’t feel any pressure to agree with what their superiors are saying. For major events, such as when a patient codes unexpectedly, no more than 15 minutes is usually needed to determine what went wrong and how to fix it. If something about a specific patient or procedure stands out to you, take a moment to share your thoughts with your peers.
An infected man’s sperm can cause birth defects in a pregnant woman up to a year after the bit from an afflicted mosquito.
There are tough decisions to be made along the way, and there are others that want to take what you have,” Doctor Bones and Nurse Amy shared. If you’re struggling to get noticed and only work night hours at the moment, you may want to consider adding some day shift hours as well, if available, to raise your visibility to those who can help you move forward on your career path.
I could schedule appointments knowing I would have those 2 days off, unless I was called in unexpectantly.
Debriefing can help the entire team find out what type of mistake it was, and develop a strategy that ensures it does not happen again.
Eating too little (Anorexia) or bingeing on food and making yourself sick (Bulimia) are two kinds of eating problems which can be very dangerous for your health. I tried to arrange my sleep schedule so that I slept for 8-9 hours together, by going to bed no later than 12 Noon and then getting up around 9pm.
Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or poultry; vegans avoid all animal products including dairy products such as milk cheese. If you are a vegetarian or vegan and follow a balanced diet, it is possible to get all the necessary nutrients for your body. This is found in nuts, seeds, pulses (beans, peas, and lentils), cereal, and Soya products such as tofu and veggie burgers. The people who tended to leave messages in the middle of the afternoon were my DON or unit manager.
Remember- it is important to eat properly, especially if you are a vegetarian or a vegan, as young bodies are still growing.
