When I personally think about the word culture I think about “impact.”  Many leaders desire to make a meaningful impact in their organizations, yet no matter how successful they are, culture is always helping and holding them back from maximizing that impact. One might expect every CEO to have a sense of urgency to understand their culture as a basis for solving problems, dealing with challenges, avoiding the tragic consequences of bad behavior, driving out fear, and eliminating their own frustrations about managing work in their organization, but this is not the case. This visual and concept is adapted from Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle and his great Ted Talk on Leaders Inspire Action. When leaders truly understand that all three circles are needed in order to maximize the potential of their organization in supporting their purpose and achieving the results they desire, real transformation can begin.
There’s plenty of studies out there about the effectiveness of change efforts and most highlight that the majority of culture change initiatives fail.  I don’t want to debate statistics but I believe most initiatives fail because 1) leaders either barely touch the surface of the changes needed to support the areas of The Culture Circles, or 2) their focus is to go deep with major improvements in one or two areas, resulting in no connection between the big change areas and the results they seek. The answer is actually found when organizations go shallow in the right areas, while making connections from that work to a major performance priority, goal, or challenge.  The organization learns by the coordinated focus on one priority and applies what is learned to other performance priorities, problems, and challenges (but faster and more effectively the next time around).
Unfortunately, most organizations implement various improvements and they never integrate enough of them as part of an overall strategy, to reach the tipping point where momentum builds, results grow, and the work gets easier.
Nearly all of these areas need to be addressed before results clearly build and momentum grows.  A major pitfall for many leaders is to focus on superficial changes, or go deep in a few specific areas, resulting in an inability to build the full support structure needed to make it past the tipping point. Awareness of the power of culture has grown but education on how to harness that power is limited.  Leaders at all levels need a sense of urgency in understanding how their culture is supporting their purpose and impacting their results as a basis for action since culture and leadership are two sides of the same coin. It’s better for this action to be focused on a specific performance priority, problem, or goal, in order to build understanding, and accelerate buy-in that drives results.  It can start with a leader at any level learning more about the culture fundamentals and holding that first meeting with their team to begin addressing the nine areas above in connection to the #1 priority in their organization, location, department, or team. The celebrations which took place on 21 June 2015 at the Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam Auditorium in Segaya kicked off with an interactive yoga and meditation session that was attended by a large number of people.
Furthermore, as a part of this year’s commemoration of the day and in line with the International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the Embassy of Palestine in Bahrain with UNIC’s support visited Al Ahlia University and the AMA International University as a way of encouraging the academia’s and in turn the youth’s discussion on the issue of Palestine. In his address, UNIC Director drew attention to the role of UNIC as well as that of the UN Agencies in Bahrain and also highlighted the Post-2015 development agenda and the MY World Global Survey. The campaign was launched on 23 November 2014 at 17:00 hrs through an event that involved statements by Ms Buena Canzana, Head of Administration, Ms Manal Sahwan, Head of Student Affairs, Dr Nabil El Kadhi, Provost and UNIC Director Nejib Friji. The day involved a painting session at the pediatrics wing of the hospital and a briefing session to the hospital’s doctors, nurses and staff members on the importance of the day. The event, which involved the participation of 300 staff members from ALBA, featured the launch of a campaign entitled “Our Children are Waiting for Us” in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate for Traffic and included statements from Mr Tim Murray, CEO of ALBA, Major Osama Mohd Bahar, Acting Director of Traffic Culture Directorate, Ali Binali, Head of ALBA’s Labour Union and UNIC Director, Nejib Friji. The purpose of the colloquium, which involved the participation of research coordinators from the various colleges of the university, was to encourage all the researchers to ensure that their research output was of the highest quality and to publish the findings both locally and internationally.

On 27 November 2012, I was glad to learn that Finland's education system is ranked best in the developed world, followed by South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore. This is a common argument put forward in an attempt to justify the low level of employment among university graduates with foreign backgrounds resident in Finland. UNIC Director’s presented on the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a particular focus on Goal No 17 on the importance of strengthening the means of Implementation and revitalizing global partnerships for sustainable development. This was highlighted during the UN Day Reception by the launch of the trailer of a documentary that is expected to be released in December 2015, focusing on the history of Bahrain’s engagement with the UN from independence to its growing international role on the world stage and a photo exhibition showcasing key moments from Bahrain’s participation at the UN from independence till date. The UN section has been created within the Central Library’s Special Collections Section where the latest UN publications and reports will be displayed. The press conference which took place on 20 September 2015 involved an in depth presentation on the Sustainable Development Summit and the new 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) led by the UN Resident Coordinator Peter Grohmann. This was followed by a press conference to further shed light on the importance and benefits of Yoga which  involved the participation of the Acting Director of UNIC Manama Samir Imtair Aldarabi, Mr Ram Singh, First Secretary of the Indian Embassy to Bahrain, Dr Akbar Jaffari, Chief Executive of JAFCON, Dr Spyridon Trous, Medical Services Manager of Bahrain Petroleum Co (BAPCO), Dr Ravi Preet Singh, Chief Executive Officer of the Middle East Medical Centre and Ms Fatima Al-Mansoori, Yoga Therapist and Lifestyle Management Coach. The session involved briefings from UNIC, represented by the Director Nejib Friji, UNDP represented by the Assistant Resident Representative Mohammed Al Sharif, UNEP represented by the Executive Officer, Omaya Atiyani, and UNIDO represented by Ehab Jassim and Ghadeer Al Sayed. UNIC Director Nejib Friji delivered the statement of the Secretary-General and drew attention to the role of several UN agencies such as UNICEF, OHCHR, ILO and WHO that have been working tirelessly for the protection of children’s rights.
UNIC Director’s address highlighted the important role played by UNITAR in delivering innovative training to individuals, organizations and institutions and further shed light on the MDGs and the Post-2015 development agenda.

This was followed by statements from H E Faeeqa Bint Saeed Al Saleh, Minister of Social Development and Dr Shaikh Abdulla Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary of International Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs who shed light on Bahrain’s success in achieving the Millennium Development Goals, the steps being taken at the national level to transition to the SDGs and to achieve the same by 2030 as well as on the delegation from the Government of Bahrain led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H E Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa who will be attending the Summit in New York. Mr Aldarabi expressed his appreciation to the Indian embassy and the other organizers and shed light on the UN’s decision to proclaim 21 June as the International Day of Yoga following the address of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly. Towards the end, the floor was opened to the students and teachers for questions which lead to an interactive and insightful discussion. He further highlighted the importance of nutrition and need to encourage healthy eating habits among children in order to prevent Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and obesity.
The workshop which comprised of three sessions and involved the strong participation of the UNCT, representatives from concerned line ministries as well as members from Bahrain’s civil societies, was opened by H E Ghanem Fadhel Al Buainain, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. They are the cause of guiding and developing behaviors and minds of individuals and communities. As an international student you are lucky since all the schools which offer education at this level strive to meet the highest quality needs, they are competing against each other and they would like to outdo each other so that they can remain attractive to the students. The school should help in nurturing the student talent and at the same time come up with an all grounded individual. Removing technical and other barriers to trade created more opportunities for consumers and clients over the world. I instinctively shared the good news on my Facebook page and included congratulatory words for Finland: "Onnea Suomi". However, after completing degree programmes, the academic career of women in Finland becomes more difficult.
Mr Aldarabi further delivered the Message of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for the International Day of Yoga and drew attention to the fact that Yoga offered a simple, accessible and inclusive means to promote physical and spiritual health and well-being and also promoted respect for one’s fellow human beings and for the planet we share. This was followed by a tour of the hospital’s children’s ward where UNIC Director had the opportunity to interact with visiting parents and their children. UNIC Director Nejib Friji participated in the second session with a presentation on the MY World Global Survey results for Bahrain. They are among the most beneficial people in the society and thus among the best of people. However, the increased flow of goods and services, is now more than ever, a need for increased consumer protection and consumer services.
But I am under no illusion that the best education system guarantees foreign students relevant employment or jobs that match their education upon graduation in the Nordic country. It would be stupid for me to say there's a high rate of suicide, alcoholism and domestic violence in Europe - when I intend to talk about the state of affairs Finland.
The same is true for international or foreign students - who are segregated in almost all sectors upon graduation. Thirdly, you don't know what people are doing to help their countries, hence common sense suggests that you should not jump into baseless conclusions.
So to confirm and strongly affirm the assertion that no ideology has failed or will fail to unite the world, is only to have quality. Finally, people have the right to choose where they would like to make a living in this globalized world.
