Unlike regular levels, the player is allowed to freely choose different seed packets to defend against the zombies every one or two flags (for normal and hard versions respectively) to continue building up their defenses. Blovers can also work, but the player has to pay extreme attention in order to avoid letting a stray Balloon Zombie slip through. The Survival: Fog and Survival (Hard) levels also introduce a new Trash Can Zombie in the Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo DS versions of the game. This time, the player plays in the Pool and attempts to survive as many waves of zombies as he or she can, choosing new seeds every two flags.
Alternatively, (depending on preference) the player could use Potato Mines and Imitater Potato Mines combined with Cattails to hold the zombies back while he or she saves up to go straight to Winter Melons, Cob Cannons or other powerful plants.
This mode also introduces the Giga-gargantuar, a red-eyed version of the normal Gargantuar that has 300 health; enough to take four instant kills worth of damage before finally going down, which means it has double the health compared to the Gargantuar. In all Survival Modes, a Trash Can Zombie occasionally appears, but only in versions which include the Trash Can Zombie. After completing nine of the ten survival levels, the music tune that is played after beating a level changes. When the player loses, the losing message says, "You survived for {number of flags completed} flag(s) before dying a GRUESOME ZOMBIE DEATH!!!" instead of the regular "GAME OVER". Zombie Bobsled Teams do not appear in Survival Mode, even though Zombonis still leave ice trails. Zombonis and Gargantuars (along with Imps) do not appear before the player beats the fourth and fifth flag, respectively. Survival Mode, Quick Play, and the Zen Garden are the only game modes that are not unlocked from a present. Although this mode cannot be accessed until after Adventure Mode is finished, it is possible to use the Limbo Page hack and select Page 0, which is essentially the Survival Mode menu.
As five Cob Cannons require 3500 sun (much more in Survival: Endless because every time you plant one, the sun cost is increased by 50 sun), it is suggested you play the first Day level, as it contains only normal This setup allows both the Pyromaniac and the Defcorn 5 achievements. Note: If there are Gargantuars in the level, you can also get the achievement Popcorn Party in the process.
When you reach the final wave, try to take out all the zombies in every row except one (one that has a Cob Cannon in it).
Because 5000 sun is given at the start and only 3500 is needed to plant five Cob Cannons, all you really need to do is plant ten Kernel-pults and then upgrade them to Cob Cannons. It is a reference to Defcon, or Defense Readiness Condition, which is a scale of alert for the U.S. Defcorn 5 is one of the three achievements involving Cob Cannons, the other being Popcorn Party and No-Cob-No-Explode.
It is relatively easy to earn in Last Stand but gets rid of most of the player's sun, costing 700 for each Cob Cannon (two Kernel-pults and the Upgrade: 200 sun plus 500 sun equals 700 sun). Along with Melon-y Lane, this is an extremely easy achievement because it can be unlocked in Last Stand. In the start, the player gets 5000 sun and can choose any plant except Sun-shrooms, Sunflowers, Twin Sunflowers, Puff-shrooms, Sea-shrooms, and the Imitater version of any of them. Last Stand is frequently used for gold farming, with as many Marigolds as possible, Gold Magnets collecting the coins automatically for the player and Gloom-shrooms for attacking. The mini-game may be named after many games or the actual term "last stand", which refers to when a small force holds its position when attacked by a much larger force, and while it knows that it will be defeated, the smaller force hopes to delay or severely damage the larger force. If the player attempts to plant instant usage plants on his or her lawn before the onslaught, they will be used instantly even if there are no zombies, which is a total waste of sun. Sun-producing plants are prohibited because the whole purpose of the mini-game is for the player to build and enhance the fortress in between onslaughts and for the player to use their sun wisely. Puff-shrooms and Sea-shrooms are prohibited because they are free and their main purpose is to stall zombies which would give the player an unfair advantage should the player fill their lawn with those in between onslaughts.
However, this is strange as since the level is set in the day, the player would have to use a Coffee Bean to wake the mushrooms up.
Last Stand is the mini-game with the most number of flags (excluding ones with unlimited flags), with 5 in total. Last Stand is the only mini-game where the word "Final Wave" doesn't appear on the last huge wave.

The Nintendo DS version is the only version to share icons of the Last Stand mini-game with the PC version.
Ladder Zombies, Jack-in-the-Box Zombies and Dolphin Rider Zombies only appear in each huge wave. Beating Last Stand on the iOS, Android, and PlayStation Vita versions with 2,000 sun left will earn the player the achievement Sol Invictus.
Last Stand is one of the hardest, but most interesting and challenging mini-games because of the numerous number of strategies. In the newer iPhone and Android versions, the icon for this mini-game has changed to a second degrade Wall-nut; the previous picture is now used for Column Like You See 'Em. You can't the first time or two they appear, but eventually you're given an umbrella plant which seems to protect the a nine-square plot around it from both bungee zombies and the basketball chucking zombies. Yeah, I've unlocked the umbrella plant, but now I have to deal with a level with both the zambonis and the gargantuans AND the balloon zombies. I'm gonna try to experiment with diverting zombies with the garlic and lining them up into a jalapeno fire or another similarly powerful plant.
Finished getting all the trophies this morning, definitely got $10 worth of play-time out of this but not sure I'd fire it up again now that I cleared everything.
I ended up buying this game as well yesterday and it rocks, I'm having a ton of fun with it. I'd honestly try the demo on Steam to see for yourself, but long story short, it's not quite the same as a standard tower defense.
As for the zen garden, I found out you need the nighttime garden for the mushrooms ($30,000). Survival: Roof is the fifth and the last normal difficulty level of Survival Mode introduced in Plants vs.
Play it like a normal Roof level, using lobbed-shot plants. Switch in Cabbage-pults for Melon-pults and upgrade Melon-pults to Winter Melons when there is enough sun available. You possibly won’t be able to plant much Umbrella Leaves in this flag so use lots of instant kills.
For each wave of zombies passed, their plants and their sun bank remain unchanged, but any lost Lawn Mowers, Pool Cleaners, or Roof Cleaners will not be restored. The zombie concentration is effectively the same as in Adventure Mode levels, so these levels should be pretty easy.
This time, the player must survive ten flags (two flags per wave), with the zombies changing every two flags. At first, the zombie density is the same as in the Hard modes, but it quickly starts increasing until it exceeds that of Column Like You See 'Em. None of these are accessible without the Limbo Page, and it is unknown why these were cut from the final game. Start out as you normally would, planting Sunflowers on the row closest to the Lawn Mowers. Leave one or two zombies in that lane and immediately remove all Peashooters or Cabbage-pults. You do not even have to start the Onslaught, so you can start a game, build the five Cob Cannons, then leave.
Coincidentally, both of them involve upgrade plants that are planted on lobbed-shot plants.
I had a corn plant stop one with butter while the others in the row attacked it, but they couldn't kill it before it got away.
It is necessary to use Sunflowers and Flower Pots, and as the game progresses further, try to get Twin Sunflowers. Use only one column of Sunflowers and plant Cabbage-pults and Kernel-pults instead of Peashooters and Snow Peas.
After each wave, the player is allowed to replace their chosen seed packets with others if they wish to do so.
In addition, upgrades for plants get progressively more expensive; for every upgrade plant that is on the screen, additional upgrade plants of the same type cost an additional 50 sun. Players can also play other Survival: Endless levels through the Limbo Page, but only on the PC version of the game.

The player can only choose four plants. This is the only version of Survival Mode that features the Giga-Football Zombie, the strongest zombie from this version.
Now nothing should be attacking the zombies left in the lane, and they should be noshing away on the Wall-nut or Tall-nut (and Pumpkin, if you have one). Ironically, Defcon 5 is actually the lowest state of emergency, while five Cob Cannons in a normal Adventure Mode level is somewhat overkill, meaning the zombies may not be very threatening. I hate to sacrifice so many roster spots just to fight gargantuans, but it might be worth trading the Chomper for the Squash and something else for Cherry Bombs. Between the fiery wall of death and the twin layers of upgraded spike strips I don't think my Chompers had to take a single bite in the last two levels. You fight them off by placing a wide array of plants with different abilities to repel them, and they have a good amount of variety as well, so there's lots of strategy in terms of picking which plants to use in a round.
It is good to have Tall-nuts to protect your plants, and Pumpkins to protect them from ambush zombies.
At the end of the first completion of each Survival level, a trophy is received with a diamond, along with gold coins for any remaining Lawn Mowers, Pool Cleaners, or Roof Cleaners.
Winter Melons and Pumpkins are essential here, and both Cob Cannon and Gloom-shrooms are a must in almost all builds.
Plant Peashooters or Cabbage-pults in the row after your Sunflowers (plant according to which lane the Kernel-pults in the third and fourth rows from the back and plant Wall-nuts or Tall-nuts in the fifth row. It is best to have only one zombie left, as this will reduce the Wall-nut's or Tall-nut's rate of deterioration. Zombies: Great Wall Edition and is unlocked after beating Adventure Mode and completing 13 other mini-games. If I'd had one more level I would have finished replacing the multi-peashooters with gatlings.
There are many factors such as time of day, plants that are specialized to be in your backyard pool, and many others. Bungee Zombies and Catapult Zombies may appear, so use Umbrella Leaves to deflect them, but since they only appear in huge waves, you could use Jalapenos, Cherry Bombs or Doom-shrooms against Bungee Zombies or Ice-shrooms with Coffee Beans to freeze them and other instant kills against catapults. Instant kills are very good here, although not completely necessary with the Cob Cannons, and zombies come in such droves that playing a half-hour of this will earn the player maybe $20,000 or $30,000 if he or she only clicks half or a third of the coins, given that the player is at least fifteen waves in.
Use Garlic in every other lane (one, three, and five) to force the zombies into two rows, placing three Spikeweed behind them to incur damage.
Place Kernel-pult the level as you normally would, upgrading your Kernel-pults to Cob Cannons whenever possible. Now steadily collect the sun produced by your Sunflowers, occasionally re-planting a Pumpkin or planting a Wall-nut or Tall-nut over the previous one. It consists of a series of five flags, located in the Pool area, which the player must survive in order to win.
Being set on the Roof, the objective is to survive five waves with one flag given for each wave.
The high number of zombies also has the effect of generating many diamonds in a short time; at its best a diamond may appear every four to five seconds.
Upgrade your Kernel-pults to Cob Cannons when you have enough sun, use a corn cob Missile to take out the remaining zombies when you have all five Cob Cannons, and then you are done.
However, unlike the Survival Mode, the player is not allowed to switch seeds between two waves of attack.
Whenever the Cob Cannon charges, you can shovel up two Sunflowers and plant another Cob Cannon. The normal modes last five waves, Hard modes last ten flags (two flags per wave), and Survival: Endless keeps on going indefinitely until either the zombies reach the player's house or the level is restarted.
