Ecofinca is our off-grid, year round home with 45 acres of sustainably managed woodland and one yurt – family managed and based upon a philosophy of low impact living and minimal carbon footprint.
The yurt , designed & constructed by Uzbek craftsmen , has a solid wooden floor with materials sourced from our own woodland.
We are located in the Spanish Pyrenees within easy reach of Barcelona , Toulouse and Zaragoza. The Fiesta Mayor, held in September is recognized as a “festival of national importance” Now in its 10th year the “Nocte” international festival of performing arts is considered by some the highlight of the cultural calender. Fisherman's Cabin, in the Dordogne, is a catch. This woodland hideaway, a 90-minute drive from Limoges airport, is set on the edge of a private lake down a rough forest track. Simple pleasures: The cabin is designed as an escape from everything, and has no mobile phone signalBob and Di lend us their tandem, so we pedal downhill to the next village, Busserolles, and stop for a beer. Off-grid itHouse is a holiday property positioned in Pioneertown, California, USA, and developed by Tallman Koch.
The special will show the construction of the 12 foot by 16 foot log cabin from beginning to end. Spiff up the powder room: Start by adding a new mirror, faucet or pair of sconces on either side of your existing mirror or medicine cabinet. Paint a room or a wall: If you don't have the time or patience to paint an entire room, try painting one or two accent walls.
Normally held in the first weekend in July, music, theater, dance, comedy and circus are performed in the plazas of Graus starting in the evening and into the night. Some lakes and rivers in the area are suitable for swimming and Graus has an outdoor swimming pool. We leave our car at the top - this is 4x4 terrain. The cabin is homely, but quietly clever, with solar-powered lights and phone charger, a wood-burning stove, compost loo and chandelier made from glass yoghurt pots that can be lowered over the small dining table using a pulley system.
Unbelievably, we end up cycling 30km, pushing the tandem up the steepest hills via the nearest town, Saint Mathieu. On the days it rains a€” and it pours a€” we buy baguettes from the supermarket, curl up and see to that Burgundy. One moment we’re having a slice of pumpkin pie and the next somebody is shoving a champagne glass into our hands and telling us the ball is about to drop. Bryce and Jeff Ward use ATVs and sleds to haul tools, lumber and supplies to the remote job site located 16 miles from the nearest drivable road.

But if you wish your home was looking better, here are a few easy and inexpensive holiday spruce-ups you can do now, courtesy of Consumer Reports. Knight Center in Akron, also includes local entertainment surrounded by 85,000 strings of dazzling lights. Hidden away in an intimate & idyllic setting it makes for a perfect retreat or romantic hideaway. The deck , alongside the yurt , consists of a well equipped kitchen – fridge , gas hob , sink with running water and a dining area with a large parasol. Ancient castles, Romanesque bridges, beautiful churches and typical Aragonese villages, there is a wealth of historical architecture to explore.
Wildlife is plentiful in the region with the Sierra de Guara internationally recognised for birdwatching. My phone only flickers into life once - in the local village Piegut-Pluviers, six miles away. We retire to the cabin full of promises to go out for dinner the following night. It never happens.
Between gift buying, holiday parties, and a litany of family gatherings, the entire month of December is usually gone before we even know it arrived. The interior of the cabin will feature wall-to-wall double bunk beds, a small kitchen with propane hook-ups for cooking and a one-of-a-kind steel wood stove to heat the cabin on cold nights.
Located in an area of natural beauty there is plenty of scope to explore the countryside on foot with marked footpaths that lead further afield. A Solar heater provides hot water for the shower and there is a well built compost toilet nearby. Nearby the lively market town of Graus has a plaza considered to be one of the finest in Spain. The region is internationally renowned for its fine gastronomic products – sausages, lamb and cheeses.
When the woodburner is blazing (there's a wood store outside) and the only light you can see is from your twinkling yoghurt pot chandelier, there's very little to tempt you away. The daytime is a different story.
This year has been no different. After spending the last five months out on the road, we’ve decided to temporarily rejoin the civilized world for the holiday season. We can supply some ecological fruit & veg from our garden and groceries from local suppliers.

We are amid forest, farm, vineyards and wide- open roads. We paddle round the edges of 'our lake' on a hand-made raft made, naturally, by Bob. We wanted to visit with family and friends, and make a few adjustments to the car before setting off again in 2016.
The regional wine “Somontano” is recognised in Spain as an exciting and up and coming denomination of origin. Reintegrating into society was always going to be a challenge, but it has been especially difficult during this time of year.
It’s amazing how fast meetings, appointments, and obligations start to pile up the moment you stop moving. But after returning back to the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, we were shocked by just how much time we were spending indoors.
Nature has a very calming effect on our personalities and it wasn’t long before we realized it was missing from our lives. So we decided to step away from the pre-holiday pull and get back outside for awhile.Something that has been on our Must-Do list for years is to visit Yosemite during the winter. We’ve always wanted to see the valley covered in a layer of snow, but never found the time to make the trip. Yosemite holds a special place in our hearts and visiting it always been a very therapeutic experience for both of us. Seeing the park decked out in its full winter whites was just what we need to slow our December down.To keep us fueled during our trip, we prepared a batch of this Festive Trail Mix. Combing seasonal colors with energy-packed ingredients, this mix helped us power through some bone-chilling days.
Perfect for a winter weekend escape or perhaps a more manageable day hike, this festive trail mix the perfect way to bring your holiday spirit outside.
Portion out the trail mix into 4 small bags if desired, or keep the trail mix in one big bag for sharing!3.5.3208 Sign up for our newsletter!
