With so many individuals becoming curious and seeking out holistic medicine for their ailments, some may wonder what the real difference is between holistic approaches versus seeking out a modern day allopathic doctor.
Many argue there isna€™t enough studies backing herbal remedies and it may be dismissed as quakery, but let me inform you that TCM -Traditional Chinese Medicine- has been around for thousands of years, likewise, Ayurvedic Indian Medicine has a lengthy history.
The challenge, say the experts, is that research shows up to half of these parents aren’t telling their doctors when they consult CAM practitioners, and in some cases, may fail to disclose the information because they fear negative reactions. Time, or lack of it, is affecting families’ perceptions of conventional medicine, concedes Dr. Here’s how three different families found CAM, and experienced varying degrees of the ongoing tug-of-war between mainstream science and alternative healing.
For Melanie Gagnon, the choice to treat her two-year-old daughter Delphine Lacoste’s cold and flu bugs with nothing but rest, lots of fluids and homeopathic remedies is based on a belief system. What appears to be at stake for families torn between mainstream and alternative medicine is trust. Jason Busse, a research associate at McMaster University, has conducted studies that show that child patients of naturopaths tend to have lower rates of vaccination than the average population. The bottom line is that Gagnon has more confidence in her homeopathic doctor, and says that she consults her before visiting a GP with any concerns she has about Delphine’s health.
A test showed several of Ethan’s vertebrae were not sitting correctly, and within a month of receiving spinal adjustments, McKinnon-Drumm says the cough improved noticeably. Chiropractors contend there is a relationship between the spine and the nervous system that affects many of the body’s functions. The tug-of-war families experience between conventional doctors and CAM practitioners is perhaps most pronounced over the use of chiropractic care for children, also the CAM most commonly used by families.
One thorny issue exacerbating the ongoing divide between doctors and chiropractors is the use of vaccinations. Vaccination is not something McKinnon-Drumm discusses with her chiropractor — she had both her boys vaccinated. For Bobbi-Dawn Drader, alternative medicines such as acupressure and herbs offer hope where modern science is failing to alleviate the ravaging affects of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in her five-year-old daughter Raegan.
Drader heard about the PIM clinic and, worried about Raegan’s worsening condition, booked an appointment through her pediatric arthritis specialist in the summer of 2007.
The Draders have continued on with the laser acupressure, although they were disappointed to see no immediate improvement initially. Lesley Young is a Newmarket, Ont.-based freelance writer who looks forward to a time when mainstream medicine is better integrated with CAM across Canada. Chiropractors contend that subluxations (partial dislocations) in the spine cause disturbances in the central nervous system, and that correction allows the body to heal itself. Homeopathy is a system of medicine based on a theory of healing called the Law of Similars. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) uses natural remedies, some dating back three thousand years, to heal illness.
A German Shepherd police dog is still on the case in Oregon after almost losing his career to a crippling condition known as degenerative myelopathy. After a few months of herb and acupuncture use, Bronko is no longer falling when running, and can feel where his legs are.
Qigong combines focused meditation, focused concentration, breathing technique, and body movements or postures to activate and cultivate Qi (energy) as it flows through the meridians (invisible energy channels) in the body. After many years of working with clients on various health issues, an underlying common theme is obvious: most women want to lose weight. What I am referring to is the way a woman carries herself, the sparkle in her eye, her ability to laugh, the energy she emits when in the presence of others, her self-confidence, and her open heart.
These qualities are directly related to her emotional and spiritual health, which in turn influence her physical health and appearance.
Bottom line: it is easier and more marketable to promote a weight loss program rather than a self-awareness program.
But I wonder what would happen if I stepped forward, climbed up my mountain a bit, and shouted out “Yo! Self-awareness (along with a rockin’ spiritual connection) will pull you forward on a journey that will end up at your dreams.
Don’t we all just want to be happy?  Who cares how great you look if you are not happy? Advancements in medicine means we now know so much more about chronic pain – and how to treat it. It should go without saying that at the first sign of pain that won’t go away, you should consult medical experts who can help you diagnose the cause of your pain and prescribe a treatment plan. Therapeutic Massage: A soft tissue manipulation technique to treat stress, pain and a variety of physical conditions and disorders.
Acupuncture: Very thin acupuncture needles inserted at specific points along the body’s meridians normalize the flow of energy and prevent or treat illness by initiating the body’s own healing mechanisms. Intramuscular Stimulation: A technique that uses needles similar to the needles used in acupuncture to find and diagnose muscle shortening in deep muscles.
Advanced Pain Therapy: A non-invasive treatment that uses sound waves to stimulate your metabolism and enhance blood circulation to speed up healing.
Spinal Manipulation: An adjustment of the spine using twisting, pulling, or pushing movements in order to loosen and move the spinal bones and joint structures that may be causing pain. Keeping your weight in check will help keep you healthy by reducing the stress on your bones, including your spine.
Considered a good way to relax, yoga is also a great low-impact exercise and is a gentle way to stretch and avoid stiffness in your joints. You go to the doctor and are likely given synthetic pills to reduce symptoms of the disease and infection that has developed in your body. Mark Sherman, a family doctor who also practises CAM at the James Bay Community Project in Victoria. Oppel agrees that conventional doctors do need to be open to different attitudes and cultural preferences toward CAM.

Ottawa-based Gagnon was exposed to homeopathy at a young age by her mother, who uses it in conjunction with standard treatments, for her own asthma. When Delphine is sick and has a runny nose, I don’t give her stuff to make her nose stop running. Gagnon, for example, was relieved to find someone who would simply talk with her about her worries that vaccinations might cause more harm than good. Her son Ethan, 11 months old at the time, had a cough that just wouldn’t go away, despite three rounds of antibiotics.
In a 2002 paper, the Canadian Paediatric Society encouraged physicians to engage in open and honest discussions with families about their use of chiropractic care, noting one study that showed less than 50 percent of families told their physicians about using it. Rather, she is now confident that regular chiropractic adjustments are the best preventive health care strategy she can undertake for her boys. Frequent pain and swelling caused by inflammation in all of Raegan’s joints prevent her from bending properly, walking and even sitting upright at times. Vohra, a dietitian, a pharmacist and then the CAM provider of their choice, in their case a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioner. But as treatment has continued, they have noticed some pain reduction and are still hopeful that, with time, they will see greater results.
A review study in a 2007 issue of Pediatrics found that serious adverse events may be associated with pediatric spinal manipulation, but further research is needed. Essentially, homeopaths use all-natural remedies that create similar symptoms of an illness to cancel out the energy signature of a symptom.
The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care recently passed legislation to regulate the professions of naturopathy, homeopathy and traditional Chinese medicine, but it will be a number of years until the framework to govern these professions is established.
Reams of research exist on all sorts of herbs and alternative therapies and their impact on certain illnesses. He has remained on the job until his proper retirement date this November, and has had more than an extra year since his initial decline.
For “Bronko”, it was a rapid decline, from award-winning police dog to beginning to not feel his hind legs, all in the space of a couple of months.
But Bronko has been completely restored to function through the hard work of his veterinarian, Dr. Marsden and Fricke are celebrating yet another victory for holistic medicine in this otherwise incurable disorder. Energy balancing, holistic healing, mindful nutrition, Auricular Medicine, Spring Forest Qigong. I think it is because she climbed a mountain of crap (childhood, relationship, sometimes genetic, but mostly relational) and learned to accept things that she couldn’t change and deal with the things that she could. The best part about living your dreams is how you can positively affect so many other lives.
While surgery is always an option for particular or serious cases of back pain, there are numerous options for treating back pain. Consulting your doctor or a specialist, like a physiotherapist, working with your doctor would be good places to start. Low-impact exercises like swimming or walking are good choices in you’re in pain or recovering from an injury. Relaxation, meditation and alternative therapies are proving to help some people manage pain.
These can include anti-inflammatories, pain relievers, and anti-biotics, just to name a few. In fact, studies show that up to 50 percent of parents are using alternative medicines such as vitamins and chiropractic care on their children. Lloyd Oppel, an emergency physician and vice-chair of the council on health promotion at the British Columbia Medical Association in Vancouver.
At the clinic, individual patients are assessed by team members appropriate to their needs; usually the team consists of a pediatrician (Dr. Vohra explains, “We look for existing evidence, and build new evidence with each patient seen.
He admits that his situation — he is salaried — enables him to take the time both to learn about CAM and to spend a little longer consulting with families, which is necessary to create the trusting, respectful environment so integral to a healing relationship. However, he also says that modern medicine can be delivered with the compassion that draws so many families to CAM. She had read stories that suggested there are links between vaccinations and increased risk of allergies and even autism. Oppel, are concerned that more decisions such as Gagnon and Lacoste’s could result in a resurgence of some serious diseases, including polio. Vohra points out why neutrality, which is an underpinning of the PIM clinic, is so important in any health-care relationship. She had been seeing a chiropractor for the past 12 years to treat a back injury, and one day mentioned her frustrations about treating Ethan’s cough.
It has been about three years since Ethan’s first adjustment, and now she takes both boys to receive regular maintenance adjustments. Two years of conventional treatments — namely anti-inflammatory prescription drugs — weren’t managing the chronic disease, says Drader, based in Edson, Alta. Sunita Vohra, associate professor, department of pediatrics at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. According to the Canadian Paediatric Society, there has been one instance of stroke in a seven-year-old following gymnastics and repeated chiropractic manipulations of the cervical spine, but other pediatric complications are few. Whether or not a healing modality is recognized and regulated varies from province to province. Fricke diagnosed degenerative myelopathy, a progressive paralytic condition somewhat similar to multiple sclerosis in humans which would end Bronko’s career and ultimately perhaps his life if it wasn’t reversed. Research is still uncovering their mechanism of action, but it is suspected that both the herbs and acupuncture boost circulation to the spinal cord itself.
She had help!  Examples: she worked on changing her negative internal dialogue, stopped looking at what was wrong with herself and the world, and started looking at what was good and right.

Dieting and weight loss only, without addressing the crap pile, may get you looking good—but unless you ignite the spark within, your efforts are only realized externally.
I would love to see you climb to the top and and ignite your spark, and so would the universe. Once you’ve been diagnosed, you have many options available to you for treating chronic pain – most of which don’t involve painful treatment or long recovery times.
Maintaining or strengthening stomach and back muscles will help support your spine, so consider exercises that focus on your core. Ia€™ll be the first to say, thank goodness we have many manmade drugs when we have infections and pain that are unbearable!
Taking herbs is a tried and true practice that was here before we built pharmacies on every corner. She says that unlike her GP, her homeopathic doctor walked her through both the benefits and potential risks, and together with her husband, Sebastien Lacoste, they decided not to immunize their daughter.
And in February 2007, after Raegan, then four years old, experienced a sudden severe bout of stiffening, Drader and her husband Dion decided they had to try something else. The remedies themselves are minute amounts of plant, animal and mineral substances diluted and shaken down to the point where there is virtually nothing left of the original substance. For example, naturopathic doctors in Ontario, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are regulated. If you are seeing CAM providers, check to make sure they are members of a college or association, and read their codes of conduct before heeding their advice. Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive degeneration of the spinal cord triggered by a similar genetic mutation to the one causing Lou Gehrig’s disease in people.
Now don’t think for a minute that this healthy, balanced, thoughtful, and insightful woman is always standing up straight on top of that mountain. Sunita Vohra, an associate professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
One branch of homeopathy called Heilkunst contends that mainstream immunizations have unsafe side effects and offers its own batch of homeopathic remedies as purported alternatives. Naturopathic doctors in other provinces, not yet regulated, are working to move their profession from the margins to the centre of the health care system. For the past few months, Bronko had been crashing every time he tried to turn while at a run, and had developed some loose stools. I also like the option that I can use this system combined with holistic means if I choose to. And quite honestly, with the backlash of anti-biotic resistance, I easily predict that humans will be forced to look for other means of fighting disease. Additionally, he had a delayed placing response, where if you put his paw in a knuckled position, it would take several seconds before he would notice and put it back. His goal was just to get Bronko through to what would be a forced retirement at the end of the year. Holistic medicine works on a different premise; emergency situations that require immediate relief arena€™t what holistic practices are generally used best for.
Introducing Ayurvedic herbs such as Ashwagandha into your diet is a great use of holistic medicine to begin -or continue- your healing journey! Once families have tried alternative medicines, this much appears to be true: they are won over by the time and attention provided by CAM practitioners. Oppel studies the research on CAM, not only as both a practicing physician and father of an autistic child, but also because he chairs a scientific panel that examines the evidence behind alternative therapies. At the same time, the two-year-old clinic is shining a light on the need for trust between families and all their healers.
But when the end of the year came, Bronko was stable again, and his retirement was postponed. She may even slide down to the very bottom of the crap pile once in a while, but if she can wipe some of the crap off, open her handbag, look inside, and see all the great accessories she can use in there, then she can climb up again, but maybe from another side this time.  Okay, I have taken the analogy far enough! Even though herbs can be used once the body has manifested disease, holistic remedies are best used throughout your life, for the prevention of disease.
Oppel has taught a course on statistics and research appraisal at the University of British Columbia, and has a graduate degree in that area.
Even though much can be done, ultimately, using herbs daily is the best way to maintain optimal health.
However, he concedes there is a divide between mainstream and alternative medicine that could end up alienating families. So it is important to understand that rather than seeking out herbal remedies later in your life when a problem arises, the best time to begin exploring herbs to maintain your health is now! Just as your choice of healthy foods contain the nutrients your body needs -based on certain chemical constituents- herbs can feed your body in a restorative way as well. Research shows that ashwaghanda can lower cortisol levels, strengthen muscle activity, and relieve insomnia and loss of memory.
This herb is wonderful for easing anxiety and for restoring sexual function, particularly in men.
He states that starting with 2 grams per day and working your way up to 10-15 grams per day for acute situations is a more accurate dose.
Once you begin to feel the herb working, bringing the dosage back down to the 2 grams per day should keep you balanced for the long term.
You can use the capsules in recommended amounts if you are sensitive to herbs, but with larger doses I would recommend a powdered version to easily get this amount into your diet.
Adding it daily to smoothies or food such as oatmeal (or food of that consistency) would work great!
