Funky, friendly and fantastic to drive, the new Ford Ka sets the new standard for small cars. To see our content at its best we recommend upgrading if you wish to continue using IE or using another browser such as Firefox, Safari or Google Chrome.
That well known, far-seeing group The Lovin' Spoonful got it right way back in 1966 when they sang Summer in the City: all about "dressing so fine and looking so pretty, cool cat, looking for a kitty". It already has a cameo role in the latest James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, with Olga Kurylenko (pictured far left) getting the pedal to the metal.
The all-new Ford Ka Concept – a sleek, compact hatchback that features bold design, quality engineering and innovative technologies – envisions a new choice for entry-level urban consumers in Brazil and other key markets around the world.
Introduced here today, Ford Motor Company Executive Chairman Bill Ford opened the ceremony at Ford’s Northeast Industrial Complex in Camacari before an audience of consumers, media and employees.
A strong precursor to an all-new global compact car from Ford, a vehicle such as the Ka Concept could launch in 2014. The Ka Concept is the second vehicle developed by Ford Brazil following the highly successful EcoSport compact utility. From a design standpoint, the Ka Concept offers many global Ford design cues including the trapezoidal front grille and detailed surface lines, which reflect the design DNA of Ford’s next generation of global vehicles. The Ford Ka Concept features a best-in-class interior design with quality craftsmanship not often found in such an attainable vehicle. Ford introduced the world to the all-new Ka subcompact at the 2008 Paris Motor Show last week. The all-new Ka features Ford's European Kinetic Design that is similar to the larger Fiesta and Focus. The next post in this blog is Audi and Toyota Considering New Small (Very Small) Cars for the US.
When the original Ford Ka was introduced in 1996, it revolutionised the idea of what a compact car should be and what it could accomplish.
The Ka has traditionally been praised for its on-road poise and agility, and the latest version expands upon this with a number of innovations. The safety systems in the new Ka work in combination with one another to ensure that you and your passengers remain secure during your journey. Some of the standard white interior bits seemed a bit tacky at first but I'm use to it now! Doesn't really like to start first time on cold mornings but thankfully does on second. Can park anywhere, goes forever on a tank of fuel, can go on narrow roads where 4 wheelers cannot and can overtake a Porsche in traffic.
Its Ford kinetic Design philosophy, all about creating a feeling of motion even while the car is still, has already received glowing reviews from the motoring press.

It does not take an Einstein to work out the theoretical value of the advance publicity this gives Ford, and visually it does have the edge on collecting kids from rugby practice or Aunt Flo from her weekly whist drive.
In addition to visiting Ford’s Brazil operations, Bill Ford was in South America to celebrate the company’s 100-year anniversary in Argentina later in the week. The vehicle strategically positions the company to address global demand for sub-B compact vehicles, a segment that is projected to increase to approximately 6.2 million vehicles by 2017. Designed with many features normally reserved for more expensive vehicles, it offers class-leading fuel economy, a roomy interior with comfortable seating for five, best-in-class air conditioning, and a host of useful technologies such as a central docking station for mobile devices and Ford SYNC®.
It represents a critical entry in emerging markets such as South America and South Asia, which will jointly make up 44 percent of the global sub-B compact vehicle segment by 2017. The raked hood communicates efficiency and precision, while bold, elongated headlamps add to the long, lean look of the body. Inventive features include a shoe console side stowage that complements a device-docking station that will serve as the driver’s connection point to the world of mobility.
At first Ford said that there were no plans to bring the Ka to the US, but the increased demand for small cars has forced Ford to rethink that decision. This morning CEO Alan Mulally told a Detroit radio station that Ford is rethinking the original decision to not bring the Ka to the US. Its combination of low running costs, innovative design, and nimble performance resonated with motorists, and the latest version of this forward-thinking model is now available at TrustFord dealerships.
Sporty and athletic, the Ka's shape gives a feeling of flow and movement, while swept-up headlights give it a modern edge. Anti-lock brakes (ABS), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBFD), and airbags are all internally managed by the central Intelligent Protection System (IPS).
Whilst every effort has been taken to ensure the accuracy of the above information, the vehicle specification and the vehicle picture shown, some inaccuracies may occur. Where savings are shown advertised prices are calculated by deducting the customer savings from the List Price. Could it be that their lyrics were heralding the time when a city car would purr through the streets emitting only low levels of CO2, taking up minimal space, and looking distinctively funky without being a drain on the financial kitty? Anticipated to grow by 35 percent from 2012 to 2017, this compact vehicle segment would far outpace the industry growth rate by 12 percentage points largely on the back of surging demand from urban consumers in developing countries. These are amenities that are important for compact car buyers who are demanding an ever more robust package of features at an attainable price.
The Ka Concept positions Ford as a strong option and exemplifies the company’s One Ford pledge to serve customers in all markets with a full family of vehicles. Sweeping, curved lines moving from the front of the vehicle to the rear create a sense of movement. The interior is offered with several trim levels, including an optional leather handbrake and seats. Handling is enhanced by the latest electric power-assisted steering (EPAS), which reacts dynamically to any given situation.

Rear parking sensors also make parking easier, even in the most challenging of circumstances. Data for older models may vary slightly so you should always check details with the dealer prior to purchase. The roofline rises from the rear to the trunk lid, where a spoiler, pronounced lines and large taillamps add a strong visual element. Individual space has been increased from the previous model, and an attractive Pearl White central console is included across the range. Please check with your dealer about any items which may affect your decision to buy this vehicle.

Standard features also include MP3 and Bluetooth® connectivity, ensuring that the Ka's interior is special, even at the most basic level. The Vehicle Price does not include any factory options (unless stated) Road Tax or DVLA First Registration Fee. Potential city babes of the future include the still semi-secret T.25 project of former F1 and supercar machinery designer, Gordon Murray, who reckons his solution will revolutionise the world of wheels. The work included a different rear anti-roll bar, designed to improve stability, alternative bushes for front and rear anti-roll bars, changes to the springs to provide a softer ride without spoiling the handling, and recalibration plus subtle mechanical changes of the electric steering for smoother, more linear feedback to the driver. The electronic stability control's intervention threshold was modified for the Ka to reduce nannying and make the judgement that it will be driven by adults. Ford decided not to take the retro route but instead has used its "kinetic" family design language.
The result is a high-bonneted (partly for pedestrian safety reasons), high-roofed (about 4.5in more than the old Ka), thoroughly modern, well packaged but rather tubby four-seat bodyshell. But tiny radio controls are a fiddly absurdity and go directly against Ford's previously asserted aim of making buttons bigger and easier to use in the name of safety.
The gearshift is vague and rubbery, the driving position impinges on enjoyment, the steering wheel is just too big and, although the car scuttles along with surefooted aplomb and excellent ride quality, the whole thing is simply not as thoroughly impressive as we have come to expect of Ford. Adjustments might be sensible because the Fiesta is, in just about every respect, the Ka's superior. A no-frills Ka for A?7,500 or even A?6,995 (the old car started at A?7,645) would have really made sense in the current world of straitened financial circumstances.
