August 7, 2012 By Irresistible Pets 10 Comments Having a Pet First Aid Kit is something that ALL pet owners need to have. The last thing you want to do during an emergency is to go searching around for phone numbers and addresses. I would also recommend purchasing a First-Aid Book for Pets that you can keep inside of your kit. Gauze Pads and Roll – This is to wrap wounds and can serve as a make-shift muzzle if need be.
Sterile Saline Eye Solution – To flush out foreign objects in your pet’s eye or to help clean around the eye area. This is pretty much what we have in Parris and Blue’s first aid kit, but I also have something else in ours. I do animal rescue and I picked up a bottle of dog aspirin to keep in my first aid kit too.
Here is a first aid kit contents list that you use to make sure you've got all the necessary supplies at home for when you need them. You'll find the printable version below, as you scroll down, but you can read what supplies you'll need to keep for your home kit right here. The list is meant to be a guide for you, a checklist of sorts, to help you remember what you may need and to make sure it is on hand at all times.
I suggest printing out a copy of the list for yourself and placing it in your first aid kit that you create, or purchase, so you can make sure you keep all the necessary supplies in stock as they're used, or as they expire and need to be replaced with fresher versions.
It is best to re-check your supplies at least every six months, to make sure you have a chance to replace older supplies before the emergency itself occurs. The first aid kit you keep handy in your home is meant to deal with minor first aid issues, and should be separate from the kit you keep with your emergency supplies.
That's because you should have some easily accessible first aid supplies in your home, that aren't necessarily mixed in with your disaster supplies. You do need a first aid kit within your emergency preparedness kit though, and the list below can give you good guidance for what should be included in these emergency supplies as well.
It is imperative that you keep emergency contact and other vital medical information within your first aid kit so that if first responders need to come, or people unfamiliar with your household need to use the kit (such as a babysitter) they can know vital information. Therefore, on the printable first aid kit contents list I've also added a spot for you to fill in your personal doctor and dentist's phone numbers, so that someone can call them easily in an emergency if needed, along with some other helpful emergency contact information. Some people want to make a homemade first aid kit, and many times this is a better idea because you can critically think of the items I've listed here as part of the first aid kit contents list and add anything that is unique to your family's needs. However, making a homemade version is not for everyone, including those without much time or who don't want to buy such large quantities of each item that they hopefully may not even need. Make sure to get a kit that is for home use, not an OSHA kit which is meant to deal with workplace first aid. Will you be putting a kit together yourself, buying a ready made kit, or waiting to decide based on who wins the ARK kit we’re giving away?
I did my shopping solo, but when I got home, I asked Henry to lay out the contents of my bags on the kitchen table while I put the girls down for bed. All of the items fit neatly into my plastic tub and I taped a small note to the top with the date…and set a reminder in my phone to take a peek inside every 6 months to rotate meds and check expiration dates on supplies.
If you, or someone in your home requires prescription medication, please take the steps to have a back up supply in your emergency kit. This can get tricky because typically insurance companies will not cover more than you NEED in a one month period…so a back up supply is out of the question from their perspective. With two kids with cystic fibrosis in our family, having a full month’s worth of Rx meds is vitally important since many of their medications are relatively unusual and not the kinds of things on the first trucks to restock even a chain pharmacy.
We hope for the best, but sometimes accidents happen and being prepared can make all the difference in saving your pets life! There are lots of Pet First Aid Kits on the market that you can purchase already assembled.
There are specific items that you may need depending on your pet’s breed and medical history.

Here are some good ones to choose from, but remember that their contents may vary and may not have everything listed in the checklist above (or perhaps they have things I haven't listed above).

The kit provides the necessary tools to address the major traumatic injuries common to K-9's operating in the military and law enforcement environment as well as common K-9 emergencies such as bloat, heat injury, and toxic ingestion. The kit is designed to be secured to the front of the body armor using a MOLLE-style attachment system. Belt and leg attachment straps can be removed and reattached as needed to allow maximum flexibility during load carriage configuration. Multiple-load carriage configuration capabilities include fanny pack, over the shoulder, attachments for 3-day assault packs and MOLLE style webbing. Each component is designed to be effective under survival stress and potentially reduce some of the physiological pitfalls associated with it. Cinch straps are included for the sides to maintain load integrity during stress maneuvers. I’d add in a different analgesic for the kids like an ibuprofen or paracetamol based preparation as a liquid.
I find that way I can put exactly what I want and need inside of the kit….and save some money! The kit can be slung over the shoulder in bandolier fashion, hand-carried, or worn around the waist as a belly-bag. It’s well worth the extra cost to us (and the consequent sacrifices made initially to get it all.
