On the 19th-20th January 2016 the Department of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME), in partnership with the University of South Africa (UNISA), the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and the Commonwealth Secretariat (Commonwealth Youth Programme) hosted National Youth Work Indaba in Pretoria, South Africa. The indaba saw Social, political and professional Youth Workers gathered at the National Youth Work Indaba to discuss South Africa’s position on Youth Work.
In his opening remarks, Prof Oupa Lebeloane from UNISA’s College of Education said that the youth work indaba is an important event for the society.
He also mentioned that the university is offering courses in youth work and it is currently working with Commonwealth to introduce new courses for youth work.
Prof Mpho Dichaba, the Programme Manager of Diploma in Youth Development shared her perspective on youth work education and training. Prof Dichaba also highlighted the current status of youth work education and training and specified the way forward. According to Dichaba, as a response to the NDP and the demand for young leaders of integrity, the Department of ABET and Youth Development is taking an initiative to accelerate the professionalization of youth work through supporting, educating and training youth workers as primary providers of services to youth. A report on education as a conduit for professionalization of youth work has noted that youth work is a multi-discipline field and thus needs alignment.
A report on employment of youth workers has called for more formalized employment as currently most youth workers work on a voluntary basis. The breakaway session for building a collective identity for youth workers has proposed for the establishment of a South African Youth Practitioners Association to organize the youth service community into a cohesive unit.
