This custom companion to the blockbuster National Geographic Channel series Doomsday Preppers is filled with how-to illustrations, "Prepper Profiles" of people in the show, and survival tips from preppers themselves.
Handy and comprehensive, the manual offers valuable life-saving information to help prepare for the most devastating calamities.
Preppers go to extraordinary lengths to plan for any of life's uncertainties, from constructing a home out of shipping containers and stockpiling 50,000 lbs.
On TheBlaze, you might consider him the inventor of the X-Caliber Shutgun Adapter system, which we showed you a few weeks ago and you couldn’t get enough of. Yes, Ralston has quite a story to tell of how he came to appear on “Doomsday Preppers” and to start the online outdoor survival store Gear Up, based out of Scottsdale, Arizona.
Still, he does remember a moment of crisis when he saw his father spring into action and thought to himself that this was the type of person he wanted to become.
Coming from a military family, Ralston signed up for the Air Force’s Special Forces ParaRescue division.
When sent to test his skills, Ralston conveniently slid into the group of returning instructors instead of the newbies. Within a few weeks, Ralston skied tested proficient and went on to instruct the 3 to 6 year old group for a year. Ralston wanted to follow his passion and entered the survival market, going back to his naturally ingrained prepper roots.
It was after this product took off that Ralston began to tailor his Gear Up website to only products he had tested and considered useful as an “inventor prepper.” All products on Gear Up are made in America and often have dual functions. It’s also these survival and self-reliance products he thinks contributed to him landing on “Doomsday Preppers,” which just entered its second season on National Geographic. In addition to the X-Caliber shotgun system, which TheBlaze featured last month, Ralston continues to innovate. In testing the Adventure Pod by Cacoon at one point, Ralston said “I felt like a big bear burrito,” because it was so low to the ground. He fashioned a new harness out of a pulley system that was used by hunters to dress their kill and was able to lift the hammock safely out of a predator’s potential reach. Reuters profiles "Preppers" who are getting ready for total and complete societal breakdown due to natural disaster, terrorism, economic collapse, pandemic, or a good ol' fashioned apocalypse.
A former Army intelligence officer, Rawles has written fiction and non-fiction books on end-of-civilization topics, including "How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It," which is also known as the preppers' Bible. Many of today's preppers receive inspiration from the Internet, devouring information posted on websites like that run by attorney Michael T. Amelie Lamont, a former staffer at website-hosting startup Squarespace, writes that she often found herself disregarded and disrespected by her colleagues. Having to pack and drag your stuff through security can put quite the damper on your vacation plans. My plan is to learn how to ride squat ponies, raid my western and southern neighbors, and do what is best in life. Hey Truman,my nickname is Gootman, and I,like you do not have a bunker, but I do very much take responsibility for my own survival and I sure wish  anyone physically and fiscally able too would follow suit. When you try to imagine the future, sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish between that which you think will happen, and that which you want to happen.

It’s comforting to think that those thousands of rounds of surplus ammunition might actually be worth something someday, right after Kim Kardashian is forced to forage for food. Nah she can live off her humps for forty days and carry 100 lbs of cargo across the desert.
It is the truest sign of the state of our country when people have a problem with people who want to be responsible. Sometimes it’s not so easy to dismiss that mindset as entirely incorrect when looking at the way things are going in the world. Face it, if you have the time or money to waste on this, there is someone out there who is not yet in prison for life +50 or on death row that is going to take it away from you on Day +1 (or whatever). Having a bunch of stuff is not going to prepare a yuppie for dealing with someone you see on Lockup or American Gangster. They are out there and they are going to rule whats left of the world when there are no cops. Cops are the top gang in most cities, and as social order breaks down, the difference between them and other gangs will become even more hazy. I guess that makes me a prepper then.  I live in an area that is overdue for a big earthquake. Anyone who thinks they can survive the roving bands of thugs, looters, rapists and hunters by having a basement stocked with food and water is deluding themselves. Yeah but then you have to subject yourself to the authority of whichever local asshole decides he runs bartertown. We will lose over 25% of the earths population in the first 60 days due to mayhem, murder and starvation. I always found it funny how much of survivalist conceptions of the apocalypse were revenge fantasies, particularly against intellectuals. Yeah… I never thought of that angle before, but it fits nearly every rant I have read or heard on the subject over the last 20 years (I live near Militia country in Michigan).
In the event of a true global collapse, if humanity does survive, the next civilization would basically have to leap directly from wood to either nuclear, wind, hydro, or solar. During the Middle Ages we relied on animals, wood, wind, and water.  It was not the best, but it was plenty to keep cities going without every man, woman, and child having to stockpile their own food and ammo.
Episodes of this highly original show, which debuted in February 2012, explore the lives of otherwise ordinary Americans who are preparing for the end of the world as we know it. To several million viewers of National Geographic’s “Doomsday Preppers” series, he’s the guy who shot his own finger on the show. On a group trail ride traversing steep terrain, one of the horses fell backward onto a female rider crushing her. Ralston recounted the head instructor there to teach the group new techniques saying in an Austrian accent how he wanted all the instructors to pretend they had never skied before. She had an idea for a new product — an automatic makeup pencil sharpener that did a perfect job in one rotation, conserving the pencil and making a like-new point. The product that really put Ralston on the map — and got him noticed by National Geographic for Doomsday Preppers — was the “Crovel,” a crowbar welded to the head of a shovel.
As Ralston’s motto goes, ”pounds equals pain.” Therefore, the more dual uses one item has, the less one would have to carry.

Check out the clip below to see David Nash of  Tennessee build his geodesic dome in preparation for impending disasters and catastrophes. Of course, they speak to Prepper patron saint James Wesley Rawles, author of How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It who also offers survivalism consultancy services. Instead of gathering students into a room and teaching them, everybody learns on their own time, on tablets and guided by artificial intelligence. One comment in particular, though, set her reeling — and came to exemplify her experiences there. I pay for fire insurance and flood insurance even tho the odds of those things happening are very low. I’ve yet to have an accident and my house has never caught fire – would I rather not have to save and prepare for potential accidents or disasters? I’m not one of them, and don’t think that I ever will be, but can I say for sure that they’re wrong? It will wipe out almost every satellite we have, every computer in existence, and our entire electronic infrastructure, leaving us to revert to survival-style living. We will lose another 25% after the first 6 months as more and more of the weak die off and new tribes of survivors form up. I think that underneath all that worry about the end times, there’s a little bit of hope that the world really will end, and the survivalist will become king of the dung heap. The first rise of technological civilization depended largely on there being readily accessible fuel sources for the industrial revolution.
Or for those who knew Ralston in other parts of his life, perhaps he is thought of as the Air Force veteran, the ski instructor or the fashion photographer. Ralston said the woman was in critical condition, but his father, having military experience, knew what to do to best help the injured woman. Now, how could a man who had skied once in his life in the sixth grade get a job in Vail as an instructor? Ralston said he had a stint in modeling, which led him to photography when he realized the pay was significantly better. The state of california actively encourages Californians to stock emergency kits in case of an earthquake. More specifically, I’m not sure a society that chooses to do the research to make that jump will out-compete neighbors that choose to build more flintlocks. However, children don’t like planning ahead but responsible adults really ought to be a little responsible.
Once married and deciding that she might not want him photographing women anymore, Ralston switched to babies.
