A look at the Big N’s rocky road with survival horror, and what this means for Wii U. I’m not sure Nintendo machines have ever been the console of choice for those seeking scares and survival horror virtue. ZombiU is one of the most hotly anticipated titles hitting the Big N’s new console this November. Kind of angry that I had to make a third wordpress account to comment, apparently my other two aren’t good enough. Nintendo never should have had an exclusivity contract for the RE franchise and all Capcom has done is enrage people because of that. Dead Space 3 is less survival-horror and more dungeon-loot crawl, which coincides with an all-new weapon crafting system. Weapons can have up to two engines attached (so two guns in one), and then the type of tip you combine with that tool will determine its effect. Then you can add circuits to increase or decrease a weapon’s stats (damage, reload speed, clip size, firing rate). Next up, you’ll want to build a grenade launcher as soon as you can access the Survey Charge tool. If you’re looking for another solid set of weapons to diversify your gear, a Javelin and Ripper are second only to shotguns and grenade launchers. The Javelin can snipe enemies from afar, with the high probability of dismembering them and impaling them to a wall. Although there are lots of fun elemental attachments, you’ll want to have at least one weapon equipped with a Stasis attachment.
That said, you may want to equip your saw weapon with the Electrocution module for the “Electric Lawnmower” Achievement (kill 30 enemies using an electrified Ripper blade) and any weapon with the Acid Bath mod for the Dropping Acid Achievement (dissolve 50 enemies with acid). You can unlock a number of unique weapons before even starting up the game (by having a Dead Space 2 save file, preorders, etc.).
Purchases of the Dead Space 3 Limited Edition come with both the Evangelizer and Negotiator. If you have a Dead Space 2 save file, you’ll also get the Planet Cracker, but despite its epic name, this is just a slightly more powerful plasma cutter. Camel 101, best known for the 2011 PC game Orczz, and Bigmoon Entertainment have unveiled their latest game today, Syndrome. Syndrome, a first person survival horror game, aims to take the genre back to its roots and move away from the action styled horror games of recent times.
Syndrome is billed as a balancing act, ammo is scarce and you won’t have enough to take on every enemy you see, so you need to observe them and decide who to hide from and who to kill. Syndrome will be released in Q2 of 2016 for Windows, Mac, Linux, PS4 and Xbox One, with Oculus Rift support thrown in as well.

In those very early days of the NES and SNES, before survival horror was known as such, there wasn’t much in the way of this genre.

You can upgrade your RIG’s features at a suit kiosk, but the suit you decide to wear has no impact on gameplay whatsoever.

Yes, there were various licensed games that mirrored their horror movie counterparts, like Nightmare on Elm Street, but the true elements of what we know survival horror games to be today didn’t really exist– except for one beacon of light that never made its way to the West.

Fans of a strict Nintendo-orientation, however, would have to wait until 1998′s Resident Evil 2 on Nintendo 64 before they could finally get their hands on this famed series, but sadly RE2 was released to a surprising lack of fanfare. Likewise, you can turn a Military Engine into one of several assault rifle, sniper, or shotgun variations. By the end of the game, though, you’ll be swimming in resources if you’ve been using your bot(s) properly and regularly.

It also fit well with the game’s enemies, the Necromorphs, who were best dismembered, rather than having a million bullets pumped into them until they ceased to come at you, bro. This sequel also adds a number of human and humanoid enemies to the mix, meaning dismemberment is no longer an integral part of gameplay.
However, that splash damage also applies to you, so make sure to equip a Safe Guard attachment to nullify any friendly fire.
For the Ripper, you’ll want to stick with the Default Tip so that the saw blades suspend in the air a few feet in front of you. You’ll want to swap out the Carbine eventually, but the Evangelizer Shotgun tip is the best in the game, giving you an immediate advantage across all of your playthroughs. I’m partial to the Witness suit (Limited Edition) and Hostile Environment Suit (complete all optional missions), personally.
To this day, we can probably count on two hands how many solid titles of this game classification have graced store shelves. This less than enthusiastic reaction was probably in part due to the time that had elapsed between RE2’s original Playstation release and its N64 release, but I’m also pushed to believe it had something to do with the game being a fairly lazy port. Attachment modules add all types of unique effects to the gun, including elemental damage, increased ammo, automatic reloads, and more.
You’ll need to buy at least a few packs to really make a dent in any major weapon or suit purchases. They’ll also start bringing back Ration Seals, which you can use to purchase downloadable-content resource packs instead of paying real money. As a general rule in Dead Space 3, you’ll want to crank up damage and rate of fire via circuit upgrades, but that’s especially true in building a beastly shotgun.
These weapons also include an Elite Heavy Frame, with all eight circuit slots open (something you wouldn’t normally see until the very end of the game if at all). Yes, there are scares, and yes, there are hundreds of zombies to brutally murder as you lambaste your way to post-apocalyptic endurance. The game’s combat, meanwhile, played out like a traditional turn-based RPG, and when a character died, they were gone for good. Needless to say, the franchise that was bulldozing all the competition on Sony’s side of the world wasn’t sweeping Nintendo gamers off their feet. People have no problem with owning multiple systems if there’s a reason to but at this point, there are only maybe 6 good looking games for WiiU. The only downside to explosive weapons is the limited clip, but since damage output is already high, you can focus on building up the clip (or possibly reload speed) via circuits.
This is a little more risky than just blowing everything to shit, but it’s still fun and effective for the brave. The pure neglect of these games on Nintendo consoles feels criminal at times, but all hope is not lost, as it looks like this could be changing with the Wii U. No resurrection, no magical elixir to bring them back to the world of living– they were gone. After all, their Resident Evil 2 seemed like a far inferior version to that of their rivals’.
But while Sweet Home was undoubtedly a hardcore game, it wasn’t really the paranormal content that made it scary. That honour went to its perma-death feature, but suffice to say, this genre ultimately didn’t boom until much later when the polygonal generation of systems arrived.
