By just adding a hatchet this kit meets the Alaskan and Canadian survival kit requirements. From the breaking news you need to know to the hottest trends circling the Web, TheBlaze has it all. Series IntroductionThis post series is for anyone who has an interest or curiosity in building their own Bug Out Bag. In my book I elaborate on each of these supply categories in great detail with 100s of detailed photos, instructions, practice exercises, recommended gear and specific supply check-lists. Though Food and Food Preparation is the 2nd Bug Out Bag Supply Category detailed in my book, it certainly is not the 2nd most important. So far, this is pretty much common sense. However, when it comes to packing food in your Bug Out Bag, it is anything but common. Food Preparation & Related ToolsIn my opinion, every Bug Out Bag should also include items for FOOD PREP and COOKING.
A metal cook pot and cup are 2 other essential Bug Out Bag Food Prep items for a variety of reasons. AMERICA is 9 meals away from chaos.I don?t remember where I heard or read that phrase but it?s always stuck with me.
Remember, while we are preparing for 72 Hours, this is certainly not a guarantee. The only guarantee we have is that an actual Bug Out will be much different than we can even imagine.
So as you begin your ?build?, don?t forget the importance of FOOD and FOOD PREP RELATED ITEMS. Amnesty for 11 million will increase debt by $6.3 trillion And that doesn't count costs of 22 million additional legal immigrants in just 10 years! As fun and cool as it looks, building a natural shelter should be your LAST option in the midst of a Bug Out Evacuation. It’s so important, in fact, that I encourage redundancy when it comes to Bug Out Sheltering solutions.
As with any critical Bug Out Supply category, what works for you may not be the best solution for the next guy and vice versa. I really enjoy most aspects of survival and preparedness, from defensive training to researching disasters or whats the latest gadget out there and how useful it is, but you know what really makes my day?
Knowing that I helped someone in one way or another to see things from a different angle, not paranoid or scared but with a better understanding of how the world around us is both wonderful but also at times dangerous, and that the best way to live enjoyable lives is to be ready for both, that’s what gives me energy to continue working. A lot of people that are into survival and preparedness are well educated professionals, men and women that have traveled the world and have seen how wonderful but also how cruel it can be at times. Eventually you may see the press starting to blame the victims, something too common in Argentina. The one thing we can do is try to learn from these tragic events, these brutal murders so as to not become victims ourselves. 5)Be more aware of your surroundings, especially during critical times such as entering or leaving your house or vehicle, and incorporate security habits to your daily life. If this kit is a bit too large for your tastes, Army Ranger Rick has assembled a few smaller kits that contain a safety whistle (really loud), folding knife, 550 cord (parachute cord with a strength of 550 lbs.), saw, signal mirror, LED light, and sparker. These are great for staying dry, and can be used as a potential shelter.  Pair this with a poncho liner (cleverly disguised as my backdrop), which is a military type blanket.
There are a million great flashlights out there, but for practicality I’m all about the Tikka XP headlamp. When you hear the term, “bug-out bag,” most people think of a whole laundry list of items that they believe must be in their bug-out bags. These are all very necessary components when it comes to a bug out bag, but I think we’re missing a few key ingredients to a well mannered bug out bag.
I’m an avid hunter and constantly am using my meat thermometer for everything from squirrels to chickens or wild hog – I never would leave home without one.
In a grid-down, survival situation, you’ll absolutely need to use a meat thermometer way more often than you would in the comfort of your own home.
Remington Oil (also called Rem Oil) is a huge necessity in the field – and lots of it. Don’t use the aerosol Remington Oil products – those are too large and waste a lot of oil by spraying it all around. It’s important to have copies of birth certificates, wedding certificates, tax receipts, land deeds, insurance documents, and other papers during a survival situation. Surely you have grabbed your bag and left for a trial run, only to find out you need something that isn’t in there.
Filed Under: Bug-Out Gear Tagged With: bug out bag Previous PostHomemade Chili MixNext Post What Does Preparedness Mean? We have used the maximum strength tooth ache medicine , both liquid and the gel kind, and a clean needle on ingrown toe nails.
YOU CAN NOT use Remington oil on cast iron cookware, and you should not use it on utensils unless you have a way to thoroughly wash them before use.
Rem Oil or break free are great add ons, but I would hesitate to use them on pots, pans, cooking utensils or a knife used for processing food. Rem oil is great, keep in mind most people over lubricate their firearms, if the gun is going to be in a bug out bag for an extended period a VERY LIGHT coat of oil will keep rust away then just a few quick drops before use is sufficient. Coconut oil is awesome and definitely could be included; just remember that it liquefies as 76 degrees. The right sleeping bag will virtually prevent hypothermia, a condition that can kill you quicker than you may think. A sleeping bag however will provide insulation and some protection from the elements in a cocoon of warmth, trapped by your own body heat. If you keep a 72-hour kit in your vehicle, even during the summer months consider also keeping a sleeping bag.
If you get stranded in a vehicle when it’s cool or cold outside, crawling inside of a sleeping bag while inside the vehicle will be warmer than wrapping in a blanket. If you have to walk out of a situation, having a sleeping bag (and the rest of your kit gear) will enable higher chances of survival if you have to shelter at night. The best sleeping bag will be the one that you actually add to your kit, because any sleeping bag is better than none.
Point being, if the purpose for this sleeping bag is for your 72-hour survival kit to be kept in your vehicle (for example), consider the worst-case scenario for the environment that you may be in – and choose the sleeping bag temperature rating accordingly. The rectangular bag allows for comfortable movement but is not as efficient at trapping your body heat.
The mummy bag is very good at trapping body heat and are predominately the colder rated bags.
Be aware that sleeping bag dimensions vary, and for you big and tall folks, this is an important consideration. The comfort of a sleeping bag will depend not only on temperature, but the softness of the inside shell and cushion of the insulation material, etc. The outside shell material is also very important for durability and weather conditions – especially if considering outdoor use because you will want it to be waterproof or water-resistant as best as possible. There are a tremendous number of sleeping bags available out there with a variety of features, quality choices, and price ranges.
Here’s one example of a popular ultralight mummy sleeping bag which is well suited for packing into a small space. During the cold months, I keep a Mountain Hardwear mummy style, down filled bag in my get-home bag I keep in my truck.

Just a bit of friendly advice, down sleeping bags are good but you got to be careful because if you keep it stuffed and compressed in the bottom of a bag then it can crush the down feathers damaging the life of your bag.
During the interstate pile up (due to idiots not believing bad weather forecasts)in Texas, one guy said he used his 20° sleeping bag in his truck when it was 0° outside and he stayed very comfortable. Combined with a ground mat and you can sleep outside in 0oF weather without freezing to death.
Posted by BabyRecs Staff on June 10, 2011 Leave a CommentWhat do you pack in a diaper bag? This compact kit (8x12x16) weighs only 16 pounds yet contains everything needed to help you survive an unexpected night out including 2 quarts of water. It is the kit to have if you want to be a prepared pilot and realize there may come a day when you have to survive for days in a remote area before being rescued. PLBs are probably the single most important piece of survival equipment you can have but since many pilots already have a PLB one is not automatically included in this survival kit. In the next 3-4 months leading up to the release of my book Build the Perfect Bug Out Bag: Your 72-Hour Disaster Survival Kit, my publisher has authorized me to write a series of 12 posts outlining the 12 Supply Categories needed to build the perfect Bug Out Bag and WHY they are important and necessary. The purpose of this 12 Step Series is to identify, define and explain why each of the 12 Supply Categories I outline in my book are critical elements of a well-thought out Bug Out Bag. It has to be easy to prepare, light-weight, have a long shelf-life and be PACKED with calories. You?d be surprised how many items fit into the Bug Out Bag food requirements mentioned above. What this means is that your average American household has around 9 meals worth of food in their pantry.
Natural improvised shelters are labor intensive, time consuming and calorie draining – all of which you want to avoid when getting to a safe destination is your # 1 Priority. A sudden and violent natural disaster (natural or man made) can force you and your family from your home with little to no warning.
Even if you pack a lightweight tent in your BOB, the knowledge and supplies to construct a quick tarp or poncho shelter as a wind or rain break can save your life. Conductive heat loss into the cold earth below can render even the best sleeping bag and shelter system virtually useless.
Selecting gear is only the first step and it is very personal – there are no RIGHT or WRONG answers.
I feel so much more aware now after reading your book and your blog and can’t thank you enough. We can be the nicest guys (or gals) and still pack a gun and know how to use it, one doesn’t exclude the other by any means.
Even if from a purely technical aspect we can analyze the mistakes made in terms of security that lead to such tragic ends, not one of them is to blame for what happened to them. Without becoming paranoid there’s always things we can do to become self reliant safety wise. You don’t need the biggest, meanest animal, but make informed decisions when getting a new pet. This can be as simple as taking a closer look before opening the garage door, not opening the door to strangers no matter how insistent they are and always remembering to lock your doors. Army Ranger Rick additionally offers a water purification kit with Aquatab tablets and a condom… for holding water (a surprisingly innovative and space conscious water container). Be sure to use it outside (denatured alcohol can have a bit of an odor) and couple with a wind break (DIY plans are available here).
This is how we keep our site free for you and other readers, so we greatly appreciate when you do purchase through our links! First aid kits, paracord, waterproof matches – all these are typically found in your everyday bug-out bags. I believe that every bug-out bag needs to contain these three items in addition to the normal bug-out bag gear. Getting a disease or food poisoning from uncooked foods is absolutely not ideal in a survival situation. One thing they ALWAYS said to us in the Army is “TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET!” The stomach and toothache stuff are excellent ideas, too!!
The tooth ache medicine is an antiseptic and it numbs the area so that you can get the piece of toe nail out without much pain. This ensures that even if you get a surprise dunking, or are caught out in a storm before you can find shelter, you will have a dry set of clothing. Even if the SHTF doesn’t happen, I guarantee this kit will come in handy over and over again! However if you do live in a location where temperatures drop below freezing, a lower temperature rating would obviously be better.
There are some very light weight mummy style sleeping bags, some which can roll up (or stuff) small and strap to a backpack, etc. It has a rugged camouflage outer bivy cover, inner patrol bag, a heavier cold weather bag along with a heavy duty stuff sack. The Wiggy’s bag, an ultima thule, that I have will last pretty much forever rolled up. Each component of the kit from the outer backpack with padded back and shoulder straps to the DaJo Survivor knife was chosen for its quality and ability to perform. Others have said it has too many duplicate or unnecessary items that would add up to too much weight. They must protect themselves from hazardous weather conditions that could force them into precarious positions, such as on icy mountain tops or in raging rivers. I will not get into recommended gear, survival instruction or specific check-lists ? I have to save something for the book! Some food products make better candidates than others and these must be carefully and strategically selected ? every OUNCE of WEIGHT and every CALORIE counts. I don?t have more than $12 worth of food in my personal Bug Out Bag and it all easily fits into a 1-gallon resealable bag with room to spare. However, I also stress the importance of including some items that can be instrumental in getting you through a longer period if necessary. In this particular chapter in the book, I discuss many of the items that help you prepare for the unexpected. I will not get into recommended gear, survival instruction or specific check-lists – I have to save something for the book! When the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami struck Japan in March of 2011 it forced TENS OF THOUSANDS of people from their homes with as little as 30 minutes warning. No shelter system is complete without bedding that can keep you warm in the worst of climates. Understanding HOW the body loses heat in a wilderness environment is critical to selecting Bug Out Bag Shelter and Sleeping Gear. I used to be entirely against guns, as I liked to think of myself as a progressive, civilized, professional and peaceful gal. I do believe also that if you do good it does come back at you, just like if you do evil instead.
We must see these moves for what they are, and usually they are techniques used by the establishment to somehow justify what’s unjustifiable. If you cook the food too long, you lose precious calories by burning the meat, and if you don’t cook the food enough, you could get sick, weak, or a long term food illness. Your survival equipment is going to be very hard to replace, so keeping them clean, well oiled, and in good shape is a top priority. Periodontitis is being linked to everything from heart disease, pancreatic cancer to ED (yes, THAT kind of ED). This tiny every day carry (EDC) kit fits into an Altoids tin, so it is small enough for everyone to carry wherever they go. In many places during the summer it still gets cold enough at night to bring on hypothermia, especially if you get wet. For example a sleeping bag (survivability) rating of 20-degrees-F would be more like a 40-degree bag for actual comfort. The seperate components can be used in any combination to cover a wide range of conditions.

The main survival kit contains a complete first aid kit and a pocket survival kit, each of which can be carried separately. Even with some suggestions of what the pack should get rid of or add, it still has more than 130 likes in less than 24 hours. This blog series isn?t as much about pitching my book as it is about selling the idea of building a bug out bag. With that said, this isn?t 5-Star dining ? it?s survival food to get you through an uncertain time and place.
My Bug Out Bag food items are all OPEN AND EAT ? meaning I do not need a stove or fire to prepare them. This blog series isn’t as much about pitching my book as it is about selling the idea of building a bug out bag. Besides FIRE (which I will discuss in a later post) BEDDING is a key component to keeping your core temp in check during frigid night-time sleeping conditions. The reality and society that surrounds us, though, is anything but civilized and peace-loving. In my opinion its not about karma but almost like a physics principle in which the reaction is similar to the action but in opposite direction, meaning towards you.
A survival blanket, compass, whistle, cable ties, mini headlamp, flash mirror, and Tinder Quik (a fire starter) are just some of the items that make up these kits. These sleeping bag systems are currently availabe either used or new unissued for very little money online. A forest fire could force someone to travel through rocky areas with treacherous trees and shrubs.
I truly believe that every person should have their own 72 hour disaster survival kit ? especially in the uncertain times we live in today. When it comes to a 72-Hour Survival Bug Out situation, FOOD and FOOD PREP would be fairly close to the bottom when it comes to survival necessities.
You can burn through a few meals in your BOB pretty quick ? especially if you don?t ration them properly. While I?ve never personally been through a Full-Scale Bug Out, I?ve experienced several small scale emergencies such as 2-3 day power outages, ice storms, flooding, severe winter storms and the like. I truly believe that every person should have their own 72 hour disaster survival kit – especially in the uncertain times we live in today. Besides your clothing, the shelter and bedding you HAVE WITH YOU is your best defense against fighting the battle against exposure. Back-up solutions to critical supply categories are important because NOTHING is guaranteed. Always trying to be as good as possible I’ve had more good returning my way than evil. Thai boxing and jujitsu combined with defensive fighting training which includes firearms and knives. Backpacks and holsters should resist damage from rain and resist being ripped by sharp tree branches. Packing some key FOOD PREP ITEMS and TOOLS gives you the option to gather, scavenge, hunt and prepare food along your journey if necessary. The survival gain from a light-weight backpacking tarp is well worth any space and weight sacrifices you might make to include one in your BOB. It is my hope that this series motivates people to begin building their own kit that may very well serves as their survival life-line one day. Have you ever tried to go to the grocery store to get a few last minute items right as the 5 o-clock news announces the eminent arrival of a huge winter storm? Shelter and Bedding is a critical supply category that should be carefully considered in EVERY Bug Out Bag.
It’s important that now, during moments of peace and normality, that you invest the necessary time into selecting gear that will withstand the conditions that only a Bug Out situation can present.
Watch the Uncle Sam’s Retail Outlet site during holiday sales of up to 40% off, and you can score a fantastic deal on these.
You CAN survive but it would get progressively more and more uncomfortable and difficult as your body slowly suffers the debilitating consequences of starvation. They will clear the shelves over a few inches of snow ? imagine what they will do in the wake of a large scale disaster. Several bottles of a fluoride rinse is a good idea as well (not just the newest minty flavored mouthwash, but an actual fluoride rinse), along with Oragel or some other topical numbing agent.
It is heavier than the ultralite types you see in the catalogs, but perfect for rugged use. If you have cavities or a loose crown, get them taking care of NOW, while you are able to do so.
The cloth is usually treated for water resistance and quickly dries, which helps to remove the weight of any water from the load. Most bug out gear is designed to accommodate three days of travel. Even in the middle of Indiana where there were no attacks, I could not get gas and the grocery stores were insane.
There are usually compression straps that allow the load to be safely secured inside the pouches or backpacks. People who have been through large scale disasters such as Katrina will attest to the fact that immediate supplies are quickly depleted and people get down right dangerous when it comes to finding more. Someone could be injured by gear that rolls around, such as a tiny compass or a bulky weapon. Skin abrasions and blisters could be caused by loose gear, which is like a grinding tool that repeatedly strikes the same spot. Tactical gear is designed to handle rugged conditions and to protect stored items with insulation or closed-cell foam padding.A soldier may have only 30 seconds to grab a backpack and leave an area before the enemy strikes with deadly force.
I can only hope that other families learn from this horrible crime and become better prepared. As of the two scum bags convicted of their murder, I hope they live in misery until executed.
Not that it would bring back the precious lives of those murdered and that’s the true tragedy of it all. Any equipment that is left behind could force that soldier into a life-threatening situation. When a disaster strikes, there is usually no way for someone to know when the threat will stop. When a disaster strikes, there may not be enough time to prepare for a quick evacuation. Everyone should have a plan about the necessary actions and equipment that will used in the event of a fire or flood. Military personnel and members of emergency crews are trained to evacuate areas, while also ensuring for future survival.
If you're looking for a rock-solid flashlight, whether you need something tactical or just one, high quality light for your home, you won't find it at Walmart or Home Depot. Avid outdoorsman Asher "Dick" Kelty couldn't find exactly what he wanted in a hiking backpack, so, in 1952, he created his own in his garage.
