There are elements of this book that I don’t love, but its gripping story and incredibly badass heroine earned it an indisputable spot on this list.
2014 was the year of my personal romance novel renaissance, and Sarah MacLean was one of my favorite discoveries. Clever, strong heroines are my favorite ever, and I’m a sucker for a good fairy tale retelling.
The main character in this Cinderella retelling is even sassier than the one in Beauty above. I picked up Way of Kings based on your recommendation earlier this year and have since gone on to read almost nothing but Sanderson since! This was perfect timing as I’m on the search for some good beach books to read next week!
These books not only have great stories, but they’re told in entertaining and engaging rhymes.
They can be tongue twisters sometimes, but the kids are always entertained by whatever goofy thing accidentally comes out of my mouth. My kids always love watching the sneaky animals of Goodnight Gorilla and dancing around the room to Pajama Time. I love that Goodnight Moon and The Snuggliest Snuggle in the World give me a chance to hold them in my laps for a few quiet moments.
When you want to help your child learn how to read, reading to him is one of the first steps. There are many books that you can buy to read aloud to your toddler that will help him with his reading fluency. The Very Hungry Caterpillar: miniature edition is an excellent choice for reading aloud to a toddler.
This book is good for teaching your little one to read because it has easy to read sentences with bright drawings, and ita€™s interactive so it holds a childa€™s attention. Among Kaden’s books, I still feel this is one of the most beautiful children books he has.
The book by author Karen Katz begins with a crying baby and the kisses are a way to try and soothe the baby to sleep.
The story is about Sam-I-Am as he tries to get the other character to try green eggs and ham.
The book is the story of a baby bird that, after leaving his nest, goes in search of his mother. I will probably read several more books over the winter break, but those will have to be in contention for the 14 best books I read in 2014!

Now that he’s not CEO of Microsoft, Bill Gates has more time for leisurely pursuits like reading. Gates might not have been able to put this book down, but it’s not exactly a pick-me-up. This recommendation, a history of hunter-gatherer society with lessons to learn from it, is for anyone who doesn’t want to be doomed to repeat history. The book investigates how the push and pull between the free market and environmental activists has frozen over the climate change debate and possibly the climate itself.

I read it in January of 2014 and I still find myself randomly thinking about the characters. I actually read it twice in one week, because the first thing I thought after finishing it was that I wanted to experience it again. Fun fact: Eloisa James herself recommended this book for me she read my Book Riot post about my journey to discover my love for romance as a genre. The Bedwyn Saga was my favorite series of hers and I love love loved this book in particular. What may surprise you though is that I didn’t start to love reading until I was in college. These are some of our favorites and what we consider to be the best books to read aloud to kids. They have different lessons, great illustrations, and keep the kids completely engaged reading after reading after reading.
Anything that requires counting, opening flaps, or feeling new textures is always a big hit. Moon Plane, On the Night You Were Born, and  Good Night Good Night Construction Site are worth owning for the gorgeous illustrations alone. I hope the books that are new to you will become as loved in your house as they are in ours. Just a couple of recommendations for you, if you enjoy Goodnight Gorilla I would check out 10 minutes til bedtime and Officer Buckle and Gloria. When a child is read to, they not only desire to learn how to read for themselves, they do better overall at reading. Ita€™s a counting book using easy words in simple sentences that your child will be able to identify. In the end, his persistence pays off and the other character declares his delight with the food. One of the reasons that this is a great book to help your toddler learn to read with, is because the format of the book keeps a limited amount of words on each page.

This year he put together a list of his favorites from 2013, though he stressed that they are not all books that came out in the past year. It probably counts as SciFi, but I think of it more as a masterpiece of literary fiction that happens to contain aliens.
My 2nd favorite Rainbow Rowell book, which is a huge compliment considering how passionately I love Fangirl. It wasn’t until then that I started to appreciate the art of good literature and the company of an interesting book. The fact that they also contain sweet stories makes them perfect in my book (badum bmm… is that what drums sounds like?). My dad used to read to me every night before bed, and it became a tradition we kept up into my early teens (the books changed, though). Both are by Peggy Rathman and her characters show up in all three books’ illustrations. The three little pigs are a big hit around here so I have a feeling three little wolves will be too. These top books for toddlers will ensure that both you and your child will have a great time reading together. It makes for a more varied list than the usual year-end wrap-ups and is a good look at what the revolutionary has on his mind. These books always make me hold my little ones a little tighter and appreciate how special this motherhood thing really is. The one book he read to me over and over from around 1st grade that I still like to read sometimes is called Blitz. Because it uses easy, rhyming words to tell the story, ita€™s easier for your child to learn to read. It alternates short and long sentences using words that are easy for a toddler to sound out. It’s a super old book (it was his when he was a kid) about a horse that goes through all sorts of situations, and eventually becomes a fire-horse (before fire engines were motorized).
