Introducing the exclusive tokidoki back-to-school collection, featuring innovative bags, stationery, and coloring products. My pubic library creates a great list for summer reading and this is the list I need for my rising 2nd grader.
As your child works up to chapter books, a great author for 3rd grade and up is Roald Dahl. I really like the Ivy + Bean series that gently presents issues of friendship mixed with sweet little adventures that appeal to little girls.
When a little girl gets a plush stingray for her birthday, it befriends her other toys as they experience the world of real people. Teacher turned author Suzy Kline uses her years in the classroom as the basis for her Horrible Harry series.
When her second-grade classmates are envious of the three students who are going away on winter vacation, the creative and ingenious Gooney Bird Greene thinks of a geography activity to cheer them all up. My son spent a preschool year obsessed with dinosaurs and we read nothing by dinosaur books for an entire year.
When Wilfong the wolf fails to blow down the house of the Pygg brothers, he stays outside their door all winter learning their games and listening to their jokes and stories, but although he claims to be reformed, the pigs are reluctant to offer friendship. Any child who has had a beloved babysitter or nanny can relate to Eleanor, who misses her old babysitter. Spending the whole summer at the beach, Daisy, who can communicate with animals, and her new friends, a dancing crab and two baby rabbits, join forces to help a dolphin in distress. Great suggestions as it is hard finding the books in between picture books and chapter books. Want to start with Toys Come Home and Daisy Dawson at the Beach – I think both my kids would love those! These books are great, I have introduced Amelia Bedelia series to my second graders, and they are enjoying it. One of my favorite read aloud books for my new 3rd graders is Sideway Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar.
If your kid loves it, then there are loads more books in the series that you can go through. My girls loved Rainbow fairies as well and devoured them but after I read, like 45!, of them alongside them, the repetitive plot and language started to make me crazy! 5, 2000 with Bill Scott of the College of Wooster, and updated in January 2003 by Doc Scribe. APA style is the style of writing used by journals published by the American Psychological Association (APA).
Some of the more commonly used rules and reference formats from the manual are listed here.
Explain what an abbreviation means the first time it occurs: American Psychological Association (APA). If an abbreviation is commonly used as a word, it does not require explanation (IQ, LSD, REM, ESP). In using standard abbreviations for measurements, like m for meter, do not add an s to make it plural (100 seconds is 100 s); when referring to several pages in a reference or citation, use the abbreviation pp. Capitalize Black and White when the words are used as proper nouns to refer to social groups. The term Asian American is preferable to Oriental, and again the manual recommends being specific about country of origin, when this is known (for example, Chinese or Vietnamese). Inuit (plural) to "Eskimo." But some Alaska natives are non-Inuit people who prefer to be called Eskimo. Capitalize names of conditions, groups, effects, and variables only when definite and specific. Capitalize specific course and department titles (GSU Department of Psychology, Psych 150). Do not capitalize when referring to generalities (any department, any introductory course). Do not hyphenate common prefixes (posttest, prewar, multiphase, nonsignificant) unless needed for clarity (pre-existing). Do not hyphenate foreign, letter, numeral terms (a priori hypothesis, Type A behavior) when the meaning is clear without it (least squares solution, heart rate scores).

Do not hyphenate if a noun comes first (a therapy was client centered, results of t tests). Hyphenate adjectival phrases (role-playing technique, high-anxiety group, two-way analysis). Hyphenate compound adjectives preceding nouns (client-centered therapy, t-test scores) unless the compound adjective involves a superlative (best written paper).
Hyphenate if the words could be misunderstood without a hyphen (re-pair, un-ionized, co-worker).
Use parentheses to introduce an abbreviation, for example, the galvanic skin response (GSR). Spell out numbers which are inexact, or below 10 and not grouped with numbers over 10 (one-tailed t test, eight items, nine pages, three-way interaction, five trials). Use numerals for numbers 10 and above, or lower numbers grouped with numbers 10 and above (for example, from 6 to 12 hours of sleep). Use combinations of written and Arabic numerals for back-to-back modifiers (five 4-point scales). Use metric abbreviations with figures (4 km) but not when written out (many meters distant). Add emphasis in a quotation with italics, immediately followed by the words [italics added] in brackets. For quotations over 40 words in length, indent and single space the whole block (double space in papers for review or publication). Use three dots with a space before, between, and after each (ellipsis points) when omitting material, four if the omitted material includes the end of a sentence (with no space before the first). Footnotes are rarely used in APA papers, except for author affiliation and contact information--the author note. Indent paragraphs, block quotes, and hanging indents one-half inch (1.25 cm or five to seven spaces). Word processor features--such as bold and italic fonts and hanging indents--should be used as appropriate.
Place tables close to where they are first mentioned in your text, but do not split a table across pages. Label each table beginning with the table number followed by a description of the contents. For old works cite the translation or the original and modern copyright dates if both are known, for example: (Aristotle, trans.
Disregard apostrophes, spaces, and capitals in alphabetizing; D'Arcy comes after Daagwood, Decker comes after de Chardin.
Single-author citations precede multiple-author citations of the same year (Zev, 1990 then Zev et al., 1990). Many documents are now available online as exact facsimile copies of the print original (usually in Adobe's PDF format).
Note: When directly quoting or citing a document, a page number or other means of identifying a specific passage is required.
Note: Occasionally a research journal may be paged by issue, that is, page numbering in each issue begins at page one. Enabling JavaScript in your browser will allow you to experience all the features of our site.
Martin's The Baby-Sitters Club series has over 176 million copies in print worldwide and inspired a generation of young readers. It seemed like PickyKidPix‘s entire 3nd grade class was happily immersed in Roald Dahl that year. I have another list here with some classics that still endure like the My Father’s Dragon series. Her new babysitter is equally wonderful and helps her to understand that you can still accept and even love your new one.
It’s a wonderful series to get girls reading but I really can not take more than, say, 15 of those books.
Let me know if I am on the right track for your daughter and I’d be happy to recommend more books.
I have made every effort to keep this document accurate, but readers have occasionally pointed out errors and inconsistencies which required correction. The manual itself contains all this information and more, organized and worded differently, indexed and illustrated.

Indent five more spaces (one-half inch, 1.25 cm) if there are paragraphs within the long quotation after the first. If there are errors, introduce the word sic italicized and bracketed--for exammple [sic]--immediately after the error to indicate it was part of the original source. In general, use letters after years to distinguish multiple publications by the same author in the same year. Add the number in the volume (in parentheses in plain text) to these references immediately after the volume number, as in the example above. One family. The third installment of the exquisite new series from Newbery Honor winner Ann M. She is concerned because she has difficulty reading and feels awkward being behind her classmates. The slim volume follows her, chapter by chapter, as she overcomes her learning disability and graduates from college. Other characters including Horrible Harry (who isn’t that bad of a kid) are compilations of kids she taught. The cartoon illustrations help to break up the text which makes this especially appealing to reluctant readers. Amelia Bedelia was a favorite series of mine as a child and I’m so happy to see that kids today like it too.
There are a lot of popular series but so many are mind numbingly boring with repetitive vocabulary and plots.
The manual specifies that hyphens should not be used in multiword names such as Asian American or African American.
As a rule, use the phrase "people with _______" (for example, "people with AIDS," not "AIDS sufferers"). 311), but she did not say which effect; Lopez found that "the effect disappeared within minutes" (p. For example: Several studies (Johnson, 1988, 1990a, 1990b, 1995 in press-a, 1995 in press-b) showed the same thing.

Finding really good easy chapter book is tough which is probably why this list is so short. As an author who visits schools, Suzy talks about story seeds, a word or a two that she jots down in an ever present notebook that become the basis of her books. I’m always trying to find books in this age category and my public library had a great list. Thanks also for Phineas MacGuire series which is new to me and I think I have a two of the Doyle and Fossey series that I never read to my son!
Pencil stub, yellow scarf, purple hanger, June Box are all actual story seeds that are now books in her popular Horrible Harry series which is now published in several languages. She chooses to keep this a secret from everyone, a secret that haunts her on major occasions.
She currently loves the Rainbow Fairies and I was just curious why they’re not good, recommended books? If that was the case, I would be able to wholeheartedly recommend them but as a parent who read too many of them, it started to feel tortuous. Each chapter is an entry from a day and year as Francie moves through elementary school, enters high school, graduates from college, and is married. My daughter is my oldest so this is my first go-around with school, chapter books, etc… Any advice would be appreciated. Contemporary issues such as racism, prejudice, divorce, cancer, and death are dealt with in an age appropriate way. While at times Francie seems wiser than her years, she is a typical young girl with whom young readers can identify.
