Push the Edge hard, and you’ll be reminded of it’s comfort-tuned suspension and high center of gravity, but the crossover didn’t exhibit any bad habits during our time behind the wheel. Options on the vehicle tested included the $495 White Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat Paint, the $995 EcoBoost engine, the $485 Vision Package (blind spot monitoring, rain sensing wipers, side mirror turn signals), the $895 Drivers Entry Package (perimeter alarm, keyless entry, push button start, power liftgate, remote start) and the $795 Voice Activated Navigation System, for an as-driven price of $39,405. Finally, the fun will be in Escapes equipped with the 237-hp 2.0L EcoBoost turbo which twists out 250 lb-ft of torque.

The liftgate can also be (optionally) opened by simply waving your foot under the rear bumper. But it seems likely that, with the right price and yet-to-be-tested-but-undoubtedly improved dynamics, the Ford Escape should be the best-selling SUV in America in 2012, just as it is in 2011. If you want to save the planet, but don’t want to compromise drivability, the Edge EcoBoost is really your best option in a midsize crossover with a blue-oval badge.
To be honest, most Edge models wear far too much chrome for our tastes, and the black lower trim on SE, SEL and Limited models looks out of place on light-colored cars.

Yes, Ford’s system takes some time to get used to, but we still find it significantly more intuitive than systems from the competition.
That said, no one will buy a Ford Edge (especially the EcoBoost variant) to run stoplight to stoplight against other crossovers. We’d prefer the better-handling Edge Sport, of course, but all Edge models will deliver predictable handling, good stopping distances and reasonable acceleration. In that case, are new engines, a revamped interior, and additional features enough to let it linger? Surely there hasn't been a respectable comparison test in the last five or six years in which the Escape was at the top of the heap. Safety features are built in which should stop your Schnauzer from perpetually opening your rear hatch when he's out doing his business. The 2013 Escape is more clearly a crossover, an effect which is particularly visible when looking at its profile view from a slightly elevated position. Fortunately, the Edge Sport offers more tasteful wheels and more subdued trim, and even throws a stiffer suspension and bigger engine into the mix; if we were shopping for an Edge, it would be the Edge Sport trim level. Our Ford-supplied tester returned an average of 21.5 mpg in city driving during our time behind the wheel.
Drivers and passengers who hate modern headrests may be happy to find that they're adjustable in the new Escape, not just up and down but forward and back. The 2013 Escape's more aggressive stance should make for no mistakes in the real world, but there's a hint of minivanishness visible from some angles, just as there is with the Mercedes-Benz M-Class.
