Mary Had A Little Lamb always goes down very well with young beginners in their first piano lessons. If you have a xylophone or chime bars it’s great to start by singing the song and playing it on the xylophone or chime bars first as it helps the child to grasp where the notes move up and down.

I am unsure about teaching my kids the numbers with the notes and also having the note names on the music.
I understand your concerns regarding confusion when using both note names and numbers. The numbers are there in order to introduce the discipline of fingering, and the note names are really there to assist people who are complete beginners with reading music. If learnt and practiced in the correct way, they have the effect of consolidating the knowledge by rote (It is important also to sing the names of the notes as you play, and memorise too.) But these are all stepping stones on the way to learning to read music, much the same as using a combination of methods to learn and build reading skills or for learning times-tables. Thanks for raising this very valid point though, I think I will write a post about it soon! Thanks for bringing this to my attention Sintara – I will get it edited ?? Glad you’re enjoying the site! There are two easy piano music arrangements for Happy Birthday here: one for children who have only just started to play, which is the simple melody line centered on middle C that they will find quick to master, and an easy piano music arrangement for both hands together which is more suitable for someone who has been playing for a little longer. If you are new to the piano, use my six easy lessons in the First Piano Lessons Series to introduce the basic concepts of fingering, rhythm and notation.

For the bride and groom, the CD is the only way to listen to all the possibilites, and make selections based on what would be most appropriate for their wedding. Even if you don't buy this, scan the contents list for suitable music ideas which you might have in your own library. Vivaldi's vivid indications that appear throughout the score have been translated into English. There are sections of this famous work that would be very good for Prelude music, or even as background music during the reception.
If not, go straight to the piano and work through the following steps together to introduce the child to the notes and rhythm first before attempting to play it.
Explain that there are four beats in a bar or measure and count 4 beats in together before you start each time. Once the child has mastered playing the tune on their own, there is a simple teacher’s accompaniment which sounds lovely when played as a little duet. I played flute and piano as a child and my brother then showed me the numbers for the notes. These very early pieces are intended to engage and encourage young beginners right from the start and to build confidence.
When children are familiar with these five finger pieces, they can start to play different tunes, but in the same familiar five finger position and they will be able to work out the notes without numbers or note names. How exciting for you ?? In my First Piano Lessons ebook there are lots more printables, and some animal keycards to play note recognition games to learn the names of the piano keys by sight too.
It has such a special significance and is one that that they will sing many times every year.
To prepare, ask the child to play and name the notes  C, D, E, F, G with the right hand 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 both up, and back down again. Once the child has identified all the notes it’s very good practise to sing the names of the notes as they play them. Start with the left hand, since this likely to be the most challenging, singing the tune along as you play the chords. Practise playing the left hand while singing along with the tune as this helps with the rhythm. Once the right hand is ready, you can play one hand each together as a duet, swapping over to make sure you practise both hands.
Only attempt both hands together when they can play each hand easily and feel ready to try. Great arrangements, not overly difficult for a good pianist to learn, and most importantly-- the arrangements sound full and professional.

Once the selections are made, the pianist can be given the music, which is exactly what is heard on the CD.
Ask the child to trace with their finger the path of the notes sliding it either up or down without taking their finger off the paper. If your child or pupil is new to reading music, take a look at this post on How to Read Music Made Easy. Then do the same with the left hand going downwards (they find this more difficult at first) C, B, A, G, F  and back up again to middle C. This is difficult at first and should be attempted very slowly and with no pressure, but it really checks that they fully understand what they are playing, and are not just relying on their memories! Find the hand position for the first G chord by identifying the bottom note and explaining that basic chords are made with fingers 5, 3 & 1, and the bottom note is the key note (tonic), in this case G. The first couple of times, it might be helpful to prompt them verbally when they should change the chord in the left hand, or which note comes next in the right hand. No great technique required, but one should be familiar with the songs to save time trying to figure out the rhythms. 147, Herz Und Mund Und Tat Und Leben, originally for choir and orchestra)BEETHOVEN:piano concerto no.
If you are completely new to the piano check out my other First Piano Lesson Series posts which introduce the basics of the piano for beginners.
Talk them through each phrase of the song line by line pointing to the notes as they try to play them.
It is really important to take a slow tempo and keep a relaxed approach, making light of any mistakes – the most important thing is to have a go and have some fun! You must be able to comfortably reach 10ths in the left hand, and have very good control of double-notes in the right hand. Depending on the age of the child they may need varying levels of help and attempts to manage this. On the 7th bar, the thumb 1 & 3 each have to move up one note to E and middle C as the words sing the name of the name of whose birthday it is.
Most of these will be familiar works, even if not readily identifiable from the titles.Highly recommended. If you're looking for an intermediate version of this work, the best arrangement I have found at the intermediate level is in the following collection.
