Learning to read standard mciusal notation is lots easier than it looks. The basics are very simple.
He had always had a passion to learn to play an instrument, and it didn’t matter that he had begun so late in life. I have recently started going for keyboard classes in order to learn to play the electronic keyboard . I think it is best to thoroughly learn all the chords in their root position before going on to invert them. You will note that the chords on the first degree, the fourth and the fifth are the only major chords. Major, Minor, Minor, Major, Major, Minor, Diminished is the order of the chords in any Major key. I’ve been dreaming bout learning to play the piano or even just the keyboard since i was like eight and now i’m sixteen and still, all i could play is doremifasolatidooooo~!

Learning a musical instrument is primarily about sound - producing sound, reproducing sound and experiencing the power of organized sound! Getting your piano tuned can cost a bit, but it is well worth while, and unless your piano is really old, or located in a hot or humid area, it should stay in tune for 5 years or so. To position your hands, place both your thumbs on middle C and each finger on both hands on one key each spanning outwards. When you look at the piano you will notice that the same patterns of notes keep repeating themselves.
Because middle C marks the centre of high and low pitches on the keyboard, it is also the centre not between the bass scales. Most woodwind instruments use the treble clef, as well as high brass, violins, and tuned percussion. In this first lesson, we are going to play a few short pieces, just using the right hand, which uses the notes of the middle C octave. When I was learning the piano, I found co-ordinating my fingers one of the most difficult things to do. So, to help you out I have written a number underneath each note in all the pieces in these lessons. This technique that really does enable you to learn pieces much faster: it’s one I still use all the time! If you know the traditional melody My Bonny Lies Over the Ocean, then you will find your knowledge a great advantage when you first play this tune! Bass Clef: This is the lowest clef, also known as the F clef because the inner curl and dots are around the line representing F.

Crotchets: A crotchet is a note that is played for one quarter of the duration of a whole note.
Stave: In musical notation, the staff or stave is a set of five horizontal lines on which note symbols are placed to indicate pitch and rhythm. Treble Clef: This is the highest clef, also known as the G clef because the inner curl of the clef sign is wrapped around the line representing G.
Recently I was asked an interesting question about the teaching method used in the Musiah piano lessons.
Do you have any particular techniques for rapidly learning and memorizing a piece of piano music? Quite often a typical approach taken by many piano teachers in a lesson when introducing students to a new piece is to take a student all the way through the right hand of the piece from the beginning to the end, then all the way through the left hand, and then the teacher will say to the student (rather unhelpfully), “try both hands together at home for next week”.
This is inefficient and ineffective as the student (at the end of the lesson) has no idea what it will be like to attempt to put the two hands together on their own at home, and has not been given any direction by the piano teacher in terms of how to go about putting the two hands together efficiently and systematically at home. In fact, one of the most common laments of an average piano teacher is that they wish their students would practice more — yet it rarely occurs to them to teach their students a system of how to practice and learn new pieces. Then, when you can comfortably play the left hand, do the right hand about 5 times until you can comfortably play it.
This way, even if the student only gets to learn 1 or 2 segments (with both hands) in the lesson, at least they have gained the confidence that comes from experiencing for themselves what it is like to play a portion of the piece with both hands while at their lesson. So whether you (dear reader) are a beginner in search of well-rounded holistic piano lessons or a more advanced student keen to learn some original, perhaps even slightly unorthodox techniques, Musiah's piano lessons can offer you tuition of quality and substance at unbeatable value. So I urge you take this opportunity to experience Musiah’s piano lessons for yourself today. Note to Spammers: All comments on this blog are subject to approval before they are published. Being a teacher myself, I think that the synergy of traditional lessons along with technology is great!

This was the approach of my jazz teacher, so I began my jazz studies by learning to play Happy Birthday in all 12 keys.
The more out of tune a piano is, the worse it will sound, which can be rather discouraging! To keep your piano in tune longer, it’s a good idea to play it as often as you can (pianos work better the more they are played) and position it against an internal wall, rather than one of the exterior walls of the house. You can easily remember where middle C is, because it is right in the middle of your piano, just above the brand name written on the front panel. The notes above middle C are notated on the treble clef, while the notes below middle C are shown on the bass clef. On the piano, the right hand usually is written in treble clef, while the left hand is written in bass clef.
The stem can either point up or down, depending on whether the note is below or above the middle stave line. However, don’t worry too much though, as I will be revisiting all of these terms and concepts in later lessons. It may sound laughable (and you may not struggle with it the way I did!), but as the pieces in these lesson gradually contain more and more notes, it does become an issue. In the graphic below, you can see how each finger on both of your hands has been given a number.

Because I’m already familiar with the rhythm by the time I start to play the piece, this lets me just focus on playing the notes correctly. Just as clapping a rhythm before you play a piece helps you learn to play faster, so you will find already knowing a song really well means that you can launch into it with much greater gusto! Being familiar with a tune already allows you to concentrate on where your fingers are going and the sound you are making, rather than worrying about counting out the timing. The clear, unfilled notes are called minims, and these are held for two beats as they are worth twice the value of crotchets. There are many elements in the Musiah piano teaching method that combine to form a holistic approach to teaching students the motor, intellectual, problem-solving, and artistic skills involved in learning to play the piano efficiently, and in particular teaching them to systematically learn and memorize pieces quickly. Then do it a few more times, very gradually increasing the tempo each time — just in that segment.
And they have been shown an easy effective system they can use to continue learning each subsequent segment at home. These are techniques that anyone can use — both piano teachers and students — to increase student progress and greatly enhance a student’s ability to rapidly learn and memorize a piece of music both during a piano lesson and when practicing at home.
Five months in the making, this significant update features (among many other things) a new scrolling Single Stave View mode which makes the notes much larger and therefor easier to read than the default Full Page View (FPV) especially on small screens. If you follow my simple instructions carefully, and work hard, putting in a little practice every day, then you will learn how to play the piano with grace and agility. I want my students to be able to play a repertoire of ear tunes before I begin teaching them how to read. Just run your fingers along the keys and see if any stick or have a tinny, reverberating sound.
Your elbows should be positioned approximately at your waist with your forearms stretching out at a 90 degree angle from your upper arm, not on an angle.
There are a couple of other clefs as well, but we won't be looking at those in these lessons.
In vocal music, both soprano and contralto parts now use the treble clef, while tenor and bass parts use the bass clef. When you see this number underneath a note, you know that this is the finger that I recommend you use to play the note with. Also, to help you learn the note names, the letter names for each note have been included in the music.
Piano Apprentice is a lightweight, highly portable 25-key keyboard with built-in stereo speakers that deliver authentic piano sound and keys that respond to your touch. He has a great improvement from level 1 to level 6 with the help of Musiah within less than 4 months. It simply takes some practice. One thing you may get hung-up on, is that most pitches (notes) can be played in more thanone place on a guitar fingerboard. As you continue to play, you will be constantly going over everything again and again, and you will find that it gradually all comes together.
It's easy to follow along as acclaimed piano instructor Scott Houston, aka the Piano Guy, appears on the screen demonstrating how to play while the actual keys on Piano Apprentice light up, showing you where to place your hands. Take the 1st E , above middle C, for example:This same pitch can be played at 5 different places. I think it is necessary because parents and children need a book, something tangible to work with.
These same notes are repeated all the way up and down the piano and the notes within each octave are called scales. Your approach is something that is very much needed and I think will be widely appreciated. Unfortunately, most piano methods prioritize the visual experience and learning to read over the aural exploration of sound and development of the ear.
