Restoring a creaky old piano can be a laborious, costly process, one that all too often outweighs what even the most sentimental can justify. Those old uprights, built by hand some 60 to 100 years ago, may look fine, but their pin blocks and glue joints are often a mess, their holes stripped and their soundboards warped or cracked. The cost to restore such a piano to good working condition could run $12,000 or more, which, unless it's a Steinway, is far more than the $4,000 or $5,000 it would take to buy a new one. Others can be found for free in classified ads, their owners all but pleading with potential buyers to take them away.
The result is that most old pianos are stripped bare and gutted like fish, their hand-turned legs and carved hardwood panels chipped and burned as fuel. So Maurice Unis and Marc Gaudin of The Joinery combined forces recently to save some of these instruments from a wasteful fate.
Gaudin says his craftsmen can easily salvage as much as 200 board feet of hardwood from a typical upright, with each instrument's potential limited only by the crew's imagination. Examples of what such old pianos can become are on display at The Joinery's showroom, the result of work by the store's staff on two antique uprights donated by Classic Pianos.
One is a 1910 white-oak Hamilton that found new life as a writing desk ($2,000); the other is a circa-1910 mahogany National, which now houses a flat-screen television, complete with high-tech lift technology ($2,500). Gaudin and Unis are betting that there are more than a few people like pianist Jacqueline Van Hoomissen, who can't bear to see Grandma's baby grand sticking out of a Dumpster. Van Hoomissen is having The Joinery turn her hand-carved 1870s rosewood upright into a writing desk. At issue is the estimated $16,000 needed to recondition the inner workings of the piano to keep it in tune after it has been played for any length of time.

To the people looking to repair this relic, I say kudos to you for your efforts, your goal is admirable, but your methods are severely misguided. By submitting a comment, you accept that CBC has the right to reproduce and publish that comment in whole or in part, in any manner CBC chooses.

They have reached a point where major parts need to be replaced, often at prohibitive expense. Seeing such lovely tight-grained wood squandered is something no one -- least of all a furniture craftsman -- wants to witness. This sentence, I realize, inspires about as much enthusiasm as the phrase "scoliosis exam," but I swear this road leads the intersection of worthwhile and interesting. Some people with a notion of hometown history have been transporting various buildings out into a little community out at the edge of Hollister. Patrick Ellis said, has sat in town hall for just over a century, has been the subject of extended discussion by boards including the community preservation committee, the capital improvement planning committee, the board of selectmen and the finance committee. Money for old pianos should come from galas with bow ties, wine, cheese and pretension, not a taxpayer funded budget. By submitting your comments, you acknowledge that CBC has the right to reproduce, broadcast and publicize those comments or any part thereof in any manner whatsoever. The Joinery's craftsmen save carvings and other unique features that pay tribute to the furniture's past as a musical instrument.

One by one, buildings with a history are popping up in this makeshift little neighborhood — everything important within walking distance of each other, artificially transplanted but so close in proximity that the artifice is negligible. You will not believe how much time has been wasted on this piano, you’d think Sandwich was arguing over an offshore wind turbine made out Piping Plover beaks.
Please go plan a fundraiser and leave the selectmen and committees alone to fix real fiscal problems, I’m pretty sure they have plenty keeping them busy these days. Please note that comments are moderated and published according to our submission guidelines.
It's there because the saloon's immediate neighbor, the former dancehall, had been destroyed in a wind storm just two days before. The structural flaw with a dancehall, you see, is that it's generally not compartmentalized into smaller rooms like most buildings would be. Instead, one room, as big as possible, sits under the roof so you can fit the maximum number of dancers. Despite preservationists' best efforts, this aspect ultimately ended up destroying the dancehall when the wind blew through the building and generated enough momentum inside to simply pick the roof up in the air and then drop it in the walls, which buckled and fell to the wayside. When I saw it, the site has been cleared of roof particles, but the walls remained, broken and lying on the ground.
For reasons I still don't understand, no one had yet moved the two pianos in, where they might have escape the rain and subsequent further ruin. I ducked under the caution tape and started taking pictures, though I feel I failed to capture the odd familiarity I felt as I stood on this ruined dancefloor and watched a piano older than I am sit and soak in the sun.
