Overview - In this luminous book, Tricia Tunstall explores the enduring fascination of the piano lesson. Disclosure: I am part of the PTPA Brand Ambassador Program with Kobo and I received compensation as part of my affiliation with this group.
I was recently introduced to the Kobo Glo HD and challenged to try it out instead of reading my normal print books.
The Kobo Glo HD has three important features; it offers comfort, convenience and customization. The battery life is up to 2 months allowing you to read an entire eBook on one single charge! When I was ready to resume reading on my Kobo Glo HD at home, the device recognized that I had made progress in the book and updated me to the spot where I left off after piano lessons. You can also connect to your Facebook profile if you want to share with friends what you are reading.
The Kobo app is available on multiple devices including iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry 10, Windows 8 and Windows 8 Phone. Could you please tell what formats can be read on this ereader and, if you tried it, can you upload books to it? In any case, please continue practicing this part of the third movement of Fur Elise and the second movement as a whole. Kristin Jensen’s site called Ear Training and Improv offers unique worksheets, videos and posts to spur musical imaginations. I’m always attempting to find a way to incorporate my favorite tool (the iPad) and prefer to remain a paper-free studio as much as possible.
After the novelty of the iPad wears off and before the reality of students reappearing at your door sets in, it’s time to determine how and when you will use your irresistible tablet in your studio. The iPad Piano Studio will give you a broad overview of the device, a list of top apps, tips on how to integrate them into your teaching and encouragement to stay current with the latest technology. David Love’s iPad 101 video will acquaint you with the buttons, bells and whistles of your shiny, new tablet. Although it may appear complicated at first, I assure you that you will not be sorry for getting your students set up with a file in Notability. If you use Web Rewards, we ask that you purchase the new Web Rewards Answer Key and Checklists which will assist you in quickly checking the worksheets your students bring to you. When preparing for a recital and focusing so much on one piece as we just did in December,  the time is ripe to not only memorize the key of the piece but master the scale and chords AND know how to spell and notate them. However, with limited lesson time, my introduction of these important theory concepts needs to be packed with memorable, hands-on experience. Once the scale is constructed and fingering refined, there is nothing like the Octavian Basics app as it displays the scale but also the diatonic chords, chord symbols, inversions and even the intervals found in each scale (and more!).
Along with Octavian Basics, the pianist and I review a sheet (All About Scales) to be completed during lab time. There’s nothing like writing on dry erase boards and I’m happy to say I have recently acquired one (with staff lines!) for my studio wall. This app turns your iPad into 9 different white boards and allows you to add a customized background with photos, color, or pdfs. As you may know, Piano Anne, Susan Paradis and others generously share their helpful pdf worksheets and tools at their websites. It is no surprise that both Anne and Susan have employed the iPad to promote and extend the use of their dedicated efforts. Already back in 2011,  PianoAnne offered instructions on how to download her custom-designed backgrounds for the White Board app. Inspired by their ideas, I recently created a pdf of a home-made lead sheet, took a pic, and loaded it into Skitch. When I learned how to take a screen shot on my iPad, it occurred to me that this could be handy but wasn’t sure quite how. If you were wondering how an iPad could be an advantage over an iPhone, here’s one more reason why you might consider it a worthy investment.
Continuing with the Creative Corner Series at 88pianokeys, Bradley Sowash offers some simple tips to empower anyone, yes even those who have NEVER stepped off the printed page before, to begin creating. Go back and improvise on Camptown Races by repeating some of the notes in the right hand melody.
An ongoing work in progress, I have assigned myself the task of organizing a list of music iPad apps. Organizing has always been a favorite pastime so I consider this a true labor of love.

Link to four articles about why you may want and even NEED to invest in an iPad featuring a list of a GREAT DEAL of  apps. Since I began teaching piano in 1987, all students have come not only for a piano lesson but also a lab session.
Every good pedagogy student and music teacher knows that it’s important to teach more than repertoire.
I’ve found that having everything together in one place saves us a LOT of time in lessons.
The lines at the bottom match the tabs of the binder, so I can easily assign tasks to be completed at home. Ear Training: Several years ago, I created 3 levels of Ear Training books with corresponding recordings that my students could use at lessons, and also at home. I also use the rhythm worksheets from the ComposeCreate site in binders when students need more practice on a particular rhythm pattern. Technique: Throughout the year, my students use blank Technique Sheets to write their own scale book.
How long did it take you to organize these (let’s say you have about 15 students in the beginner-early intermediate range)? My students keep their individual binders from year to year (I only replace them when they start to come apart; usually kids can get 2-3 years out of the same binder).
I used to do a lot more with mini-games and flashcards that I sent home in binders, but ran into the same issue – there were always missing pieces by the next week!
I use a syllabus program developed by the Kansas Music Teachers Association called Music Progressions that lays out musicianship objectives for students each year (i.e. All of my materials correspond more closely to the Progressions levels, than to a specific method book. I, too, would love to see the how the method book levels correspond to your store products! I have been blown away by you and some others who share your wonderfully creative ideas with the rest of us! I, too, would love to see your chart that shows the correlation between your products and the method books, etc. Even as everything else about the world of music changes, the piano lesson retains its appeal. It came at just the perfect time because I had just finished up my book and was looking for a new read.
The Kobo ebookstore also gives you personalized recommendations, free previews and reviews!
If I’m running out the door to shuttle Bridget to one of her lessons and forgot to bring my Kobo Glo HD, I can still read my book on my smartphone. You have read and agree to the Global Shipping Program terms and conditions - opens in a new window or tab. Import charges previously quoted are subject to change if you increase you maximum bid amount. I have been so busy finishing my ACT math prep book that I just do not have time to teach any theory this week. Therefore, I’ve created a tutorial on how your students can complete Kristin’s mother-pleasing project with just the iPad and the help of some terrific apps, of course! You will have a virtual folder for each student that can hold assigned worksheets, theory tests, even recital programs. As a teacher, you can use the online activities in your own lab or encourage your students to complete the activities at home online.
Also included in this document are checklists for every level of Web Rewards that will help students and teachers keep track of their progress. Although I like to introduce these concepts thoroughly myself, the app encompasses the basic elements through powerful visual and aural experiences which greatly enhances student comprehension. You and your students can then draw on the personalized background with various colored markers and erase with ease. Using a convenient Dropbox link, it is so easy to transfer them into the app (click here to learn more). In honor of the pumpkin season and knowing my students could use a review of note names and theses sentences,  during lab time, they were asked to write in note names on the Pumpkin worksheet crafted by Susan Paradis. Thanks to Piano Anne and Susan Paradis, it turns out this capability could be one of the best ways to  keep lab assignments innovative with handy worksheets but resulting in fewer runs to the office supply store. One drawback, the marker size is a little bulky, it would be nice if the tip could be reduced to a finer tip.
However, I think I’ll still use the White Board app a little more, just easier to use.
The simplicity of Bradley’s advice almost makes you think, wow, I should have thought of that!
Two students arrive at the top of the hour, and one begins the lab assignment while the other works with me at the piano. My beginners especially go home with several little games and activities in a folder, but it doesn’t seem to work all that well (and they do tend to lose the items, if not the whole folder, LOL). Level 1 Sightreading, Level 2 Ear Training, etc.), and send them out to the copy center to get done all at once – that way I get bulk discounts, PLUS my educator discount!
I do use the binders with my young students, but don’t necessarily include all of the different sections right away.
The length of time we spend on the binder segments really depends on the student, and how much work we get through in the binder each week.

When I implemented the binder system, I decided to go from charging a one-time enrollment fee (only when the student first started lessons), to a yearly fee.
If my old piano teachers had any of these fun ideas that you present, I would have been the most amazing pianist EVER! Drawing on her own lifelong experience as a student and teacher, Tunstall writes about the mysteries and delights of piano teaching and learning. I read in bed so I want something that will be easier for me to hold and allow me to relax and drift away into the story. On the other hand, you can also read in the dark with its built-in adjustable ComfortLight. If you reside in an EU member state besides UK, import VAT on this purchase is not recoverable. Since the special day is coming up shortly, I decided to check out her Mother’s Day Composition activity. Included in this service are free Melodic and Rhythmic Dictation exercises that are difficult to find. Purchasing this resource will also help in deflecting the cost of creating these resources that we are providing for you. However, an app called Multitouch White Board discovered a while ago, serves the same purpose and SO much more. They switch places after 30 minutes. High school students move into a 45-min lesson with a 15 min lab session.
She created a file for each student where assignments were listed and scores recorded when complete. The Friends of Free Piano Music site has some terrific short arrangements I often use for sightreading as well.
I require my students to have a binder, but must admit that I am not very organized when it comes to giving them good reasons to open it every day.
When I have the time I’m going organise and include as many of your ideas as possible into my teaching. I’ve been reading since I was three years old and during that time, have had many books bring me to that special place.
I realized when we moved to our new home in Ontario that I just didn’t have the space. I was surprised that I actually preferred reading in bed with the Kobo Glo HD than a regular book. It will be so much easier than carrying several books with me, at the rate I fly through books.
I drove to multiple stores and was wondering if I would have to drive to Ottawa (150 km drive one way) to find it.
This offer is not valid in conjunction with any other offer or promotion and cannot be used to adjust amount paid on previous purchases. Below are examples of how I combine her resources, Notability and also the Tenuto app to provide an outstanding and beneficial lab experience for my students’ lab time. Combine the features of either app with the ability of the iPad to take screen shots and you have a winning educational combination. I continued this tradition and each week a new assignment was written in every student’s assignment folder. Revised Edition Brand New This course is designed to present the easiest possible approach to piano playing, piano music download mp3 free piano tuning johnson city tn easy piano best classical piano mp3 cool classical piano songs to learn john thompson s. I recently switched to the little assignment books but they are not ideal (actually, they really are not good for aside aside from writing page numbers and that is not enough).
Starting in level 3 when the students are introduced to the I IV V chords, I give my students a copy of the the 12-bar blues pattern. In a world where music is heard more often on the telephone and in the elevator than in the concert hall, why does the piano lesson still have meaning in the lives of children? I often turn on my side to read and with some print books, it’s awkward to try and turn the pages. As I believe it is crucial for students to see and memorize where half-steps occur within a scale, this process provides the perfect visual for what makes a major scale (half steps between scale degrees 3 and 4 and 7 and 8) or a minor scale (half steps between 2, 3 and 5, 6). Overall, this plan required a great amount of planning on my part and tedious work from week to week to update records.
In each level,  there are several times where the Web Rewards course asks students to download and complete a worksheet.
Instead of  downloading the sheet, students duplicate the correct worksheet within the Notability App. I see where you have mentioned a chart for the Progression, method books and your store products.
The built-in dictionary is great if you aren’t sure what a word means (it happens sometimes!). Once it is duplicated, students edit the title, adding their name behind the title of the worksheet. For example they could incorporate broken-chords, hand-cross arpeggios, waltz patterns, fancy 2-measure rhythm patterns, etc.
